College: Ateneo, DLSU or UST

hi. i know most mommies here have pre-school - high school kids, but i need help. i am a young mom, with an incoming college freshman my daughter is graduating from a science HS this march.

my dilemma is this: she passed all 3 schools with the ff courses - ADMU BS Chemistry with Applied Computer Systems, DLSU BS Biochemistry and UST BS Chemistry. i would like to hear your recos what would be the best school to send her to. we live in Pasig. i am after quality of education, safety and security, and of course, travel/commute. please help me. would appreciate any input she needs to decide by March.

Hi Sis,

I graduated from DLSU, and had very nice experience during my college years in DLSU Taft. But my course was from College of Business & Economics and not on Sciences. From what I know, center of excellence din ng DLSU iyong college of Sciences. However, given your constraints, since you live in Pasig, I think ADMU will be the best choice location wise. Also, the added applied computer systems that goes with the course sounds nice. Congrats to your child and Goodluck

I'm a Thomasian with a daughter also in UST...if hindi naman issue ang finances, why not Ateneo. It might also be the nearest to your place, unless later on you allow her na magdorm.

If I were in your place, no doubt I will choose Ateneo.  Quality of education, the Jesuit/Ignatian spirituality, network of alumni,  top-notch faculty, excellent facilities, a beautiful and green campus (UST is also beautiful but it is located in a flood-prone area) and the atmosphere in Katipunan and Loyola Heights is for me, similar to the youthful vibe in other famous university towns. 

I am not from Ateneo ha so I am not biased.

Since you live in Pasig, best option is DLSU (Greenhills ha). Di mo nabanggit kung saang DLSU e.
I would not recommend UST for safety and security since it is an open university due to the church and hospital, tapos the surrounding environment is not really that safe. Plus ayun nga, nagfflood sa loob.
Ateneo is also ok, but I think kinda far from Pasig.

Graduate ako ng UST (BS Chemistry) - sa tingin ko naman ok naman yung quality of education na nakuha ko dun. Di naman ako nahirapan maghanap ng trabaho at the same time iba rin talaga ang disiplina. Something na magagamit mo rin sa buhay. But as a mother, kung pumasa naman sya sa Ateneo, at I assume na di naman issue ang tuition fee sa iyo, go to ateneo.

Kasi ako naranasan ko yung hepatitis "epidemic" sa espana, tapos el nino noon, sobrang init talaga. Although di ko naranasan sa 4 years ng college ko doon ang lumusong sa baha kasi nga el nino at saka naka dorm ako, so pag baha our landlady will tell us and di na kami lalabas. ;-)

Hi! I graduated from a science high school also and the majority of us ended up going to either UP or ADMU.  Given your daughter's three choices, I'd choose ateneo, too. It has the quality education and nice location you're looking for. Second choice would be UST.

^ Not usually.  As far as I recall, noong Ondoy lang and one time nagka-flash flood na nawala naman after a few hours.

I will choose Ateneo because of:

1. its facilities and faculty
2. location - I studied in Miriam College because I didnt want to study anywhere in Manila (flood, commute, and overall atmosphere). Katipunan is very laid back and I think a lot safer compared to Manila.

My husband is a Lasallian pero he votes Ateneo for college over DLSU. Kahit magkaanak kame ng boy, I wont send him to LSGH kahit pa alumni si husband don. Masyadong  malayo for us.

Sis Peewee I am from Pasig too and my daughter will soon be in college. Junior sya now in St Paul. And those schools are also her choices. I already told her that it would be very very hard for her to travel to UST since kahit ako hindi ko kaya may drive going there. Traffic, distance from our place and considering half of the school year wet season sa atin and mabaha talaga yung area. Sayang lang ok talaga yung school.  With DLSU naman, traffic, distance plus parking is a big problem.  But the only good thing with DLSU is madali talaga mag commute. I can just have my daughter brought to the closest train station and mag MRT then LRT nalang sya.  But kakayahin ba nya ganyan everyday especially if she decides to join the pep squad of DLSU? Kawawa naman yung bata and for sure she will be too tired na pag uwi.   So in short best bet namin is ATENEO.  I can have my daughter brought and picked up in school with no hassle talaga. Security wise okay din sila lalo na girl yung anak natin.  Yung wala lang sa choice mo na gusto ko rin is UP. Kinda hesitant lang though because of the security but I feel talagang well rounded yung kids dun.

TS saan kayo sa Pasig? Graduate ako sa UP Diliman nasa area ng Ateneo and from Rosario ako so ang ruta ko talaga is Marikina-Cubao-Katipunan na jeeps. Tatlong sakay yun, madali isipin pero totoo mahirap din. Minsan inaabot ako ng 2 hours pag traffic sa may Santolan area. (Last year lang ako grumaduate). Ang kagandahan dun may MRT and Bus options din going there. Pwede ring LRT if you are from Santolan area, pero lugi naman kung 1 station lang ang itatravel to Katipunan station. Siksikan pa.

Pag UST naman, if you are near Rotonda, maraming Quiapo na FX dun. Most of my HS friends yun ang ruta to Uste, baba ata ng Espana or something. An hour or so rin daw ang byahe.

DLSU yung husband ko nung college, ang ruta niya from San Joaquin naman siya, Jeep-MRT-LRT. Malapit siya sa Guadalupe station dahil sa location ng house niya, pero kung sa may Rotonda area/Simbahan ka naman mas malapit ang Shaw Blvd station. Hirap dun siksikan tsaka twice na nanakawan yung hubby ko noon (well di naman ata kasi maingat yun haha).

Pero sis, di naman sa location lang din yan kahit gano naman kalayo kung gugustuhin nung bata diba. Opt for the best na lang tsaka yung trip niya talagang course, tutal may tatlong pamimilian at iba-iba naman kahit lahat may label na Chemistry. Dami kong classmates noon uwian pa from Laguna and they did well naman. Syempre as parents di naman natin maiwasan na dapat comfy yung bata, pero college na yan e. Hayaan namang makaranas ng hirap haha it's part of growing up.

Syempre Ateneo, kasi Atenista ako. Nung 4th year highschool ako, i also passed the entrance exams
of Ateneo, UP and UST.
ang ginawa ng mom ko (UP Diliman grad ang mother ko at ang side ng family nya halos puro
UP diliman) na nagro-root for UP syempre ay ipinasyal ako ulit sa all 3 campuses. Taga province ako,
kaya yung entance exam sa Ateneo, sa province na namin kinuha.
we'll i fell in love sa campus ng Ateneo at even sa mga students, they really look so different in a really
good way.
Then, nirevisit namin ang UP Diliman.  Hmm, not perfect for my personality.
Oh well, malaki talaga ang difference. saka sa safety alone, mas safer inside Ateneo than UP.
Pareho lang din naman kasi ang quality ng education ng UP and Ateneo kaya go for Ateneo.

and coming from Pasig, mas malapit ang Ateneo at easier sa ag commute.

Just basing it from my experience. I'm lived in Pasig & studied in UST. Hindi naman ako nahirapan mag-commute or pumunta dun.
Hatid-sundo ako ng car & I usually leave 2hrs before my class. Nung time na nag-commute naman ako kasi conflict sa pagsundo, papunta isang FX lang sakay then baba sa may Vicente Cruz (?) ba yun
sa may Sta. Mesa, then isang sakay ng jeep going to UST.
Pauwi naman sa Quiapo ako sumasakay ng FX going to Pasig.

But my classes were in the morning and half day lang ako. Nung nalipat sa afternoon - night class, hatid sundo na ulit ako.

I'd choose ADMU. Not only because of the location but my husband, my sis in law, my family also came from that school. biased no hehe
