Rooming-In
« on: October 13, 2012, 11:56:07 am »
I'm not sure if there's a thread like this one already. If there is, mods kindly merge na lang po itong post ko.  :)

To all the sisses who have experienced rooming-in with their babies right after delivery... what was it like? Please share your thoughts and experiences on this. I'm thinking of rooming-in with my baby right after delivery so I can breastfeed her exclusively... is it better than putting her in the nursery instead and then be brought to my room for feedings?

I did not room in baby, my son stayed in the nursery (Huggery) the whole time.  Share ko lang experience ko so you'll be able to compare.  During feedings, i had to go to the nursery, not the other way around.  So even in the wee hours of the morning, a nurse will wake me up to go down to the nursery. I gave birth at Asian Hospital but I think for hygienic/safety reasons,  once you decide the baby will stay in the nursery, the baby will not be taken out during the whole stay to avoid exposure to viruses/bacteria and spreading it to other babies.

I gave birth at Cardinal Santos, delivered baby at 6.34 pm, then the next morning with pedia's go signal, baby was roomed-in.

There are nurses and resident pedia's who do scouting multiple times a day. The nurses clean the baby while the resident pedia's monitor baby's health. If it's baby's time for hearing test (or other tests), the nurses will fetch my baby in our room.

And nakapag breastfed ako by demand, not by schedule.

Hi, joining! :)

I used to room in babies, that was part of my job.. :) its really ideal to room in the babies hours after the delivery, and not right after the delivery.. When the mom is fully awake (bec of the sedations given during labor and delivery) thats the time the baby will be brought to the mom for feeding and so on..

I was able to experience this, as a mom, twice.. I gave birth at makati med and they roomed in my first born exactly 9 hours after my cs op..they gave glucose for my son during feeding hours..my second child was roomed in 24hrs after because they had to observe her pa in nursery..thats when i experienced feeding her, going down to the nursery every 2 hrs..it was really difficult for me since i just had my operation..

the answer to your question is a big YES. it's much better to have your baby roomed in specially if you want to breastfeed her as there are some instances wherein the nurses give glucose or formula milk sa baby. and better make sure you have your birth plan ready and remind the nurses that you want your baby to be roomed in and exclusive breastfeed lang.

pano pag tulad kay kettlekorn na ayaw pang lumabas ng milk for first few days tapos roomed in si baby? hayaan lang walang mainom si baby basta pa suck lang?

^as what we've always said in the breastfeeding thread, there's no such thing as no milk and its very crucial for the baby to keep on latching duringthose times for them to get the colostrum

Just let the baby suck your breast sis, the sucking will stimulate your milk.. And may makukuha pa rin naman si baby kahit papano, kasi if wala, iiyak si baby.. :)

i suggest rooming-in a few hours after delivery for the new mom to have a rest. kasi once baby is roomed in, no more sleep for you.  :)

I have birth at cardinal santos and we decided not to room in baby -simply because we knew we would have a lot of visitors and didn't want her exposed just yet. During nursery viewing hours the entire window was just our guests and they had to take turns viewing pa hehe i just walked to the nirsery everytime they called, which was every 1-2 hours. The nursery was right down the hall from my room and i think tje walking helped with my recovery too (nsd)

Hi! I'm new and would like to share my experience. I gave birth at The Medical City last March 2012. And yes, my husband and I decided to room-in our baby because what mattered most at the time was for my baby and me to be successful at breastfeeding. And the entire hospital - OB, Pedia, staff, etc. were really encouraging us to room-in. Plus, I get to hold and see my baby 24/7 during our first days together. As for the risks of having guests who could be carriers of infections, we simply limited our guests to parents-in-law, brother, sister & very, very few aunts, uncles & cousins. So if you are really committed to breastfeeding your baby, I would highly recommend Rooming-in. :)

Paano pala ang set-up if baby will be roomed-in? Where would the baby sleep? Beside the mom sa bed? Or does the hospital provide a crib for the baby to sleep on?

I roomed my daughter in pero the following day na sya nadala sa room ko. I gave birth at 2am but stayed in the recovery room til 5pm dahil super full ang hospital. She was brought to me twice for latching while I was at the recovery room. The following day she was taken to my room in a cot. Yung first night namin to sleep as a family was very surreal, I didnt even get to sleep :)

I gave birth in St. Luke's QC last March. Understanding ko is automatic room-in ang baby. So what happened, since CS ako, sabay kami nasa Recovery Room, siya pa ang naghihintay sa akin. Then, immediate family members lang pinadalaw namin. So talagang hands-on parents agad kami with the aid of the nurses.

I gave birth in Medical Center Manila a month ago via c-section. And i guess it was a good decision that we had our baby roomed-in. My room was in the 9th floor kasi and nursery is some where in  the 5th floor yata.

After i gave birth medyo groggy pa ako, i guess because of the anes and valium. So imagine if nasa nursery si baby and i have to feed her.. and after naman na magsubside yung anes, medyo hirap pa ako bumangon so same din, it would be hard kung sa nursery sya.

also, sure ako na pag naka room in na di napapabayaan si baby. in fairness sa mcm, alaga naman kami ng nurses and docs. :) its fun to room in and mas convenient din.

I gave birth in St Lukes GC two months ago. I think lahat dun roomed in ang baby :) Masaya sya! Although I can't compare kasi this is my first baby and I havent experienced pa [textspeak!] nasa nursery ang baby.

It's nice to have the baby nearby. Para ka lang ring nasa bahay much more comfy lang and may nurses to help you plus lactation consultants to teach you how to latch , breast feed etc.

I think kasi they do that (rooming in) to encourage the moms to breastfeed kasi mas madali nga naman magbfeed kapag malapit ang baby hindi ka na lalakad masyado which should be difficult lalo na kung CS ka :(

Parang no choice kundi formula muna?  And after the operation ulit, lalo na pag nawala yung effect ng anesthesia, pag nakaroomed in si baby at umiyak, is it okay to call the nurse para iabot si baby sayo para mapabreastfeed?  Hirap kasi gumalaw lalo na yung unang bangon mo na wala na yung anesthesia, ouch!!

i dunno sis if its just me or what pero i wasnt that groggy naman na super tulog.. medyo medyo lang.. haha! nakakatulog pero di yung straight tsaka deep sleep kaya i can still feed my baby. im lucky cos my mom, hubby and my cousin who's a nurse were with me the whole time so sila nagaabot sakin kay baby. the next day after my cs procedure, i was still n bed, i took time recovering. move lang ako from side to side, sit sabed and dangle my legs, mas napadali na magpalatch kay baby nun then after ayun, nakatayo na ako. yes its painful pero seeing my baby and knowing she needs me made me overcome yung pain.

so still, i go for rooming in. ;) teehee
