I've had a change of heart. I'm going for the Kindle Paperwhite instead kasi halos half ng weight ng Fire/ Nexus. And anyway, I realized I'd be using it more for reading talaga. Meron naman akong note 2 for other media like games and movie Ang problema ko lang ngayon di nagshi-ship ang Amazon sa singapore

i love amazon customer service talaga.

i purchased my paperwhite last year, i chose the one with special offers, since it's cheaper. i figured i could always turn off the special offers later on if it bothers me, i think i will be charged a fee of $20 for it.

recently, i tried doing just that, unsubscribing from the special offers. i was prepared to pay the $20 fee. however, for some reason, i can't unsubscribe from it. it asks for my payment details but i don't get unsubscribed. i checked my card, and i wasn't charged either.

i decided to email amazon about this. i just asked to be unsubscribed from the special offers, and i said they could charge my default credit card in amazon. a customer rep replied immediately, and said that since i reside in the philippines, i can't avail of the special offers anyway, they just removed the special offers without a fee.

^^ you can use a forwarding service like comgateway. or vpost, pero i personally don't know anyone who has used it. ang strange nga na they don't ship the kindle to singapore.

^^ i agree with you, sis. i also love amazon's customer service. mabilis magreply at may solution talaga sa mga problema. gusto kong gawin yan ha pero i am in UAE, baka i-free din. LOL. one time hindi ako makapurchase ng ebook kasi daw di pwede sa location ko, nag email ako sakanila, and nagreply kagad na babaguhin nila yung settings and itry ko daw ipurchase ulit kasi pwede ko ng mabili yung ebook na gusto ko. tama nga

Thank you for the tip, @moonstar_004! It never occurred to me to contact Amazon support to get Special Offers off my Kindle.

Tried it this afternoon and they took it off for me.

Removing Special Offers requires a US billing address kasi.

^I have a US address din, but it's primarily for shipping. My credit card on record and billing address are PH pa rin.

Di naman sila nagtanong about my US address, so I guess it's ok to leave it on your account.

needless to say, i also love amazon. and i am super happy with my paperwhite. i actually dont use my ipad anymore. i read using the kindle and browse the internet or fb using my iphone. my husband said we never should have gotten me an ipad in the first place.

@littlemissbiatch, I suspect it's because of the government's media regulation. Sa dali mag-purchase at download ng reading articles  by Kindle mas mahihirapan silang i-control kung alin lang ang gusto nilang i-circulate.

And yes, madami akong nakitang mga blog na may instructions kung pano sila bumili ng Kindle and even ebooks. There's a way around it. Kailangan nga ng US address, basta magsign up lang sa mail forwarder. Borderlinx, Vpost and Comgateway are the most popular. Meron pang isa, na nagcreate ng online shop dedicate for Kindle talaga kasi umabot na sa libo yung mga comments nya sa blog minsan redundant yung tanong. He can help in purhcasing the Kindle for you and assist you in buying ebooks.

hmmm... i checked my kindle's country settings in my amazon kindle account and it's set to US. i dont know if i should change it to PH so i can have the ads removed.

i just remembered din - i have an amazon account (where the kindle country is set to PH), my husband has one too and my kindle is linked to his account. i noticed that some books are priced lower with his account compared to mine. some are free pa sa kanya while sa akin hindi. so i guess the country setting has an effect din in terms of price. i dont think i will change it. di naman ako naiinis sa ads sa ngayon.

yey, happy that the ads were removed for some of you for free also.

i just opted to have the ads removed lang naman kasi i noticed that my kindle lights up even if i'm not using it. i suppose is it's because of the ads. so that's contributing to the loss of battery power.

i charge siguro every 2 weeks, i read for hours everyday. i figured that removing the ads will make my battery last longer.

@clueless - my country setting is set to US as well. Mas mura kasi books pag US setting, minsan free pa vs $2 pag non-US countries.

The CS just asked if I was currently in the US. I told him no and he went ahead and removed the ads for me. To be on the safe side, you can just change it to PH and change it back afterward.

@moonstar_004 - I also noticed that my Kindle sometimes lit up kahit naka-cover na. Might be the ads nga.

Im from SG too. nakabili na ako from Amazon and i used Comgateway. ok naman sya. mabilis naman sila mag-process at walang hassle.
but i buy ebook reader here through emerasia.com.  i think meron silang ready stock ng kindle and other US ebook readers.

i dont notice my PW lighting up naman when not in use. or maybe i dont notice because of the cover?

i'm contemplating turning off the wifi setting though and just turning it on when i need it. but i still havent figured out how to do that. haha.

@kayesl, I read kasi that comgateway opens your packages. I guess it's fine because they just check for prohibited items kaya lang i really don't like the idea of my packages being opened  How long before you received your Kindle?

I finally took the plunge and got myself a Kobo Glo from GadgetPinas. I weighed between getting from Amazon and GadgetPinas (the only one I saw selling Kobo here in the PH), but I leaned on the latter since it is cheaper. Kobo Glo costs 6,090 and the sleep cover around 2,500. I can’t believe the cover costs about a third of the device already. I just don’t know where else to get one.

From my two days of use, so far I love it. It supports epub files (the primary reason I chose this one instead of the Kindle as all my files are in epub) and has an expandable memory (compared to the Kindle which is just limited to around 1.4 gig for storage). My epub files range from 500 kb to 4mb so a higher memory is definitely a plus. Cloud storage is not for me, I am not a fan of maintaining a lot of files in the cloud. Also, I do not want to be tied to the Amazon platform.

This is my first time owning an e-reader and I don’t have another to compare it to except to a tablet. It is not as advanced as a tablet (I have an iPad Mini as well) but I do love that it serves its purpose really well. It feels like you are actually reading from an actual book minus its bulk and weight. The light is a wonder at night. Surprisingly, I just use around 20% brightness with no issues. The light is also remarkably even, beats using an external light. I also like that I can turn the light completely off (not just to its lowest setting) when there is enough light in the room. No glares or eye strains that I get from the iPad.

Hopefully, this will last me around two or more years of use. I am not the techie type and I am not one who upgrades devices as soon as another one goes out in the market.
