HELP: My kid is Muslim, but I'm sending him to a "Catholic" school
« on: September 17, 2012, 10:53:34 am »
Does anyone else have the same problem? My kid is attending Nursery classes in a developmental school near our house. He's Muslim and I think the school is mostly composed of Catholic students (as the norm in Manila, I think).

When we enrolled him, I put extra sheets of paper to indicate his religion and several instructions on what he can/can't eat during birthday parties, what he can/can't do in prayer, etc. They have an "opening ceremony" every day where they pray and sing songs. Because I'm the one who drives him to school, I have managed to talk to the teacher and ask if he can be excused from the morning prayer. But one time, I heard him say "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen." -- I think they also have closing "remarks" where they also pray, and because I go to work, I can't stay the whole day in school and watch over what they're doing every day.

Can anyone help on what I need to do? I'm Catholic and my husband is Muslim, and we've agreed looong before that our kids will be Muslim. My initial reaction is for me/us to talk to the teachers and have him excused from closing prayer as well, but I also don't want my son to feel out of place in school. I think he's also a bit too young to understand if we tell him not to join his classmates in prayer.. :(

I think the teacher should oblige to your request. If you are that concerned, your child should be excused from participating in those exercises.

or is there a preschool na di masyadong "christian" ang approach?

I understand your concern because we are currently living in a country that practices diversity in religion and in race. my daughter goes to a regular preschool and her teacher is a muslim, when they pray they say address it to "God" para general

Their school is actually an open-classroom school, not like normal schools, such as CSA, Don Bosco, etc. So I would think "those" other schools would be more "Christian" in their approach. It just so happens that they have opening/closing remarks, which I think are beneficial naman to other kids in the school.

Our initial reaction talaga is to talk to the teacher to excuse our son from Catholic practices. Kaso parang, out of place naman sya if he's instructed to go to a separate room while they practice Catholic beliefs. Just a bit tricky because he's just in Nursery, so it's difficult to let him understand not to join his other classmates in prayer.

na-instruct mo bang mabuti ang anak mo na he is supposedly excused from catholic practices?
Pwede din naman na di sya kasali sa mga ganun but since he's nursery pa lang he hear his classmates out nagagaya nya,
Aside from talking to the teacher eh kausapin mo din si baby mo...What to do,not to do,

My suggestion is for you to enroll your kid to a non-sectarian school.

Hi Cassie! We have the same situation... I'm planning to enroll my kid sa homeschool or sa international school para hindi sila particular sa religion. My kid is only 2 yrs old right now

Muslim din.kami. My kids go to a supposedly nonsectarian school pero meron pa din catholic prayers sa traditional nursery. Next year montesorri na lang both kids.
My husband and his friends plan to setup a muslim school soon though. It is just a matter of sending over his brother an imam to handle Quran studies and then using a montesorri curicculum

It's very difficult to insist things done your way. Catholic schools (or other religious schools) have their school curriculum and activities designed in such a way that Catholicism is a way of life in schools. Even if you want your kid be excused in such activities - but you cannot always insist on this.

Would you excuse your kid on that one? I think most Catholic school wouldn't agree.

I agree with the suggestion of sisses here. Better get your kid on nonsectarian schools. That would even mean putting your kid rin in public schools, international schools, montessories... whatever suits your budget. Or if there's a Muslim school, then much better!

When I enrolled him, the school said they have other kids who are non-Catholic and that they can accommodate our request.

I also don't want him excused from Religion classes (my husband studied in Ateneo de Zamboanga, which is a "more Catholic" school) - ang sa'kin lang din is don't force him to do some stuff (i.e. do the sign of the cross, etc), which I've explicitly told the school naman na beforehand.

Will look into Montessori hopefully next schoolyear.

hindi kaya at your son's age, nagagaya lang niya yung classmates niya and not necessarily tinuturuan ng teachers since you already told them na muslim siya?  i agree that you talk to your son and explain to him why he should not do those things.  baka kasi hindi pa nya masyadong naiintindihan?  baka wala pang concept ng religion?  akala niya, lessons pa din yun or something?  i had classmates na non-catholics before and sila mismo alam nila when not to participate eh.

i actually think that at his age this is not something to be bothered about. i dont think the teachers would force him to follow the catholic practices din. what i think is nahihirapan mga teachers to isolate him during those times and it would be possible that your child will feel alienated.

I'm sure at home you do all the muslim stuff naman di ba? just explain to the kid and tell him the difference. eventually he would be able to distinguish what to and not good to follow (for him)

i too studied in catholic schools from nursery til college - im non catholic. the teaching and training at home and from our church were more stronger di naman ako na persuade. i even lead the rosary / joined processions / participates on masses - i enjoyed it but it never changed my belief. or maybe muslims are more strict with regard to this? understandable. entirely different religion.

There is a muslim school in Quiapo( intersection of Vergara st) pero di up to Grade 6. The Nazarene Catholic School has many muslim students, but muslim students are exempted from Catholic activities like Mass.

Try to enroll the child in a non-sectarian school.

Thank you for all your inputs, really helpful :) I'm Catholic; it's my husband who's Muslim. So they go for prayer every Friday. I don't go with them, so I don't really know how my husband explains his prayer to him. I will strive to have that "difficult conversation" with him and resolve, once and for all, how to deal with this.

I think we've been sweeping it under the rug because it IS bound to be a difficult conversation. Although I have been talking to my son na his religion is different, he can't do "In the name of the Father..", etc.. But I personally think my husband has to explain it more to him, rather than me.

I also agree with what byutijunkie and pinkpotato said na maybe wala pang concept ng religion at his age and maybe he thinks it's just part of his regular lessons. One of my husband's greatest fears is that our kids won't appreciate Islam the way they do (because my husband was raised in the province where they had more Muslims around) -- so nagiging touchy talaga yung topic for him.. :(

sis, makisabat na hah, converted to Muslim ang husband niyang nag work overseas iyong dati kong land lady.  now their only child sa St. Paul Makati nag school. If you are not comfortable sa set up ng school, better transfer him na lang for your peace of mind.

hi cassie, i feel for you. muslim din kami and i had a really hard time looking for a school for my daughter, we've been looking since she's 3 1/2 y.o, she's now 5 1/2 y.o. initially, i enrolled her in a progressive preschool na malapit dito sa house namin. may prayer din in the morning, but it's ecumenical, they refer to God in general (no sign of the cross). pero they pray na both hands together (parang clap position) which is usually for christians. as you know, for muslims, open ang hands, like asking for alms. initially nagulat kami because my daughter told us sa dining table to pray first and then nakaposition na hands niya together. she kept saying na kami ang mali and tams siya. i was very alarmed at first. well walang magawa except pagalitan ng daddy niya. the teachers understand that she's a muslim pero ginagaya niya kasi ang classmates niya.

eventually, we transferred her to a small montessori school (regina maria montessori in pque). she was 5 years old na by then. may ecumenical prayer pa din. she already knew na she prays differently and even tells her teachers and classmates na iba ang position ng hands niya. funny thing is, even her playmates she convinces to pray the muslim way. we just explained to her that we (including her relatives) pray differently, but most of her playmates and classmates will also pray differently. later on in the school year, however, i attended a parent observation. i noticed during prayer time that she was hiding her hands from me. i got the idea then that she had her hands together again.. i felt a bit alarmed but at the same time naawa ako sa daughter ko. at home she prays in the muslim way, but somehow she wants to "fit in" while in school. i didn't talk to her about it this time anymore kasi we will be transferring her to ob montessori next school year (for other reasons).

my daughter now knows may muslim prayers, and she enjoys making du'a very much. she's very aware now of our practices, especially after her grandfather died. i think what's important is to solidify the practices at home.

nevertheless, i will make it a point to speak with her teacher in ob montessori so that they are apprised that my daughter will be praying differently and has dietary restrictions. i hope everything will go well.

just sharing my experience with you, hope everything works out well for you cassie.

there are of course various other options aside from montessori. the best option for muslims, of course, are muslim schools. the next best option would be international schools, then montessori and progressive schools, then non-sectarian schools, and the last, of course, would be the sectarian schools. this ranking is based solely on the religious aspect, btw.

for muslim schools - i'm not sure where you live, but you might want to try the New Horizon Integrated School in Brgy. Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City. It's a good Muslim school, malaki siya, they have a mosque. I've done consultancy work with nhis and know that it's good. I think tf is around 25-30K. I'm just concerned sa location. There's also the Taha Basman school in Maharlika Village, it's patterned after the OB pagsasarili school. I know the owners and can assure you that they are a very smart family. tf is less than 20K!

for international schools - if budget is not your concern, there are several international schools to choose from from north to south of manila. the cheapest of all is the aguinaldo international school in manila. you can google their website to learn more about it. tf for kinder is 58K (P20,000 discount if payment is made on or before May 31), and for grade 1, it's 78K (same P20K discount).

for montessori schools - there are several montessori schools to look for. just make sure it's an authentic montessori school. maraming montessori schools that are heavy on religious practices.

for progressive schools - there are a number of progressive schools in metro manila, especially in quezon city. there's the nest, academeia in qc. there's also the bridge school in the south. the pioneer in progressive approach is jasms in manila.

for me, we chose ob montessori for various reasons including proximity, availability of a bus service (this is our deal breaker) and whether or not she will qualify for grade 1 this coming school year. if not for the absence of a bus service, i would put her in either jasms or the aguinaldo international school, for religious concerns primarily, while taking into consideration the quality of the school and getting a holistic education.

good luck for muslim parents with this same problem. if we can get together to put up a school. this would really be great. :)

Thank you xlammer!  Your post was very, very helpful.  We are not Muslim but are looking for a secular school and international school stretches the budget for us too much.

thanks kikas_head! you may also want to consider the waldorf schools in rizal and in binan. tf is also in the reasonable range (<100K) :)
