Excited for our US trip this december.
First stop namin is New York.
Dito kami magspend ng new year.
Plan sana namin mag countdown sa times square kaso sabi nila mahirap daw kasi
di mahulugan ng karayom sa dami ng tao?

true, hindi mahulugan ng karayom sa dami ng tao. also, malamig masyado yang time na yan. it would be very hard to even go and find a washroom is you want to pee sa dmai ng tao. parking is a nightmare, well, as always naman in NYC.

"Manhattan" as far as I know is Uptown (Upper East & Upper West,  not Harlem); Midtown (Times Square, Hell's Kitchen, etc) & Downtown (up to Wall St.)


Oh yeah -- you tip the cab drivers. But $1 is the standard tip, not 15% ha.

$1 is not standard tip for cabs. It's a good thing they didn't throw you out of the cab and then run over you.

^^^according to my BIL, kelangan maaga pa lang andun ka na to get a good spot but ang problema dyan, if you need to pee, for sure daw hindi ka na makakabalik sa pwesto mo sa dami ng tao but if wala naman care sa lamig and dami ng tao, why not.  Mas ok sana if puro adults kasi kawawa ang kids if kasama pa and pagkakaalam ko, bawal ata uminom sa area na yan sa ball drop, tama ba?

Kami we watched it sa TV na lang then took photos sa TV screen para lang may photos kami ng ball drop.   *corny* Haha!  No choice kasi, may kids kami and wala maiiwan sa kids.  If maiwan naman yung isa to take care of the kids, kawawa naman siya and hindi rin ok kasi hindi kami complete so we decided to stay home na lang.

difficult to pee because A. almost all stores are closed, or if they're open you need to buy something from them because someone is manning the bathrooms asking for everyone's receipt. lol. or B. pee in the subway bathroom which is hindi sa nagiinarte, pero grossest place ever that's why some people choose to wear adult diaper haha. and get ready for the train ride back because it's packed and it takes a bit for a new train to come. yes bawal uminom, well bawal naman talaga uminom (alcoholic) in streets in general. Sa Las Vegas strip lang ata hindi. haha

Over all, it's nice to experience it ONCE. If asked if I'd ever do it again. No thank you.

As a New Yorker, I do not, I repeat, do not recommend you do NYE in Times Square. Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT a New York experience. Real New Yorkers would not be caught dead there, even if you paid them. Head instead to a nice local bar downtown where they will most likely be airing the countdown anyway. Or perhaps a private event that they always have going on around the city. Something. Anything. Else.

j_in_tokyo My friends and I were going to watch the balldrop new year of 2008 BUT early afternoon pa lang pagdating namin super dami na ng tao. Hindi talaga mahulugan ng karayom, hindi na lang kami tumuloy. We planned initially to book a hotel around time square and we would share na lang the cost kaso late na nung nag-decide to book, fully book na mag hotels. Ang lamig lamig pa. Better watch it on TV na nga lang. I thought it was very hyped up lang, wala ngang fireworks. We were in 8th avenue so very close to times square, we went out at midnight, parang wala lang.  bigla ko na-miss ang new year sa pinas.

Are you staying in a hotel? Hotels are so expensive in New York especially NY time. In 2008, i remember the marriott close to times square  (not the marriott in times square) was $500 per night. so naki-stay muna kami ng hubby (then bf) sa friend ko. Jan 1 na kami nag-hotel, $250 per night.

Anyway, just got back from New York three days ago, my first time summer in New York, i love it more!!! I've been to NY twice pero winter and another time very late autumn na.  I love the rooftop bars and the iced coffee!

I guess sa TV na nga lang kami magwatch or we might spend it in a local bar na lang..

para maranasan naman namin yung lifestyle ng isang New Yorker kahit 5 days lang kami dun..

^Brooklyn would be good. Isang tawid ka lang Manhattan ka na. I'm also looking to stay there since laki ng mura talaga compared to Manhattan (unless I find a very good deal). I'm still researching though where the best area is in Brooklyn in terms of easy access to public transpo and safety at night (am sure gagabihin kami palagi ng uwi).

Hi everyone.

I would like to ask anyone who is familiar in NY. We'll be in NY this August. Since nagtitipid, we decide to avail our benefit as an employee of a hotel. We'll be staying in Holiday Inn Express -  Brooklyn Downtown, 279 Butler Street, Brooklyn, New York. Would you know if this kinda safe place? Ang mahal kasi around times square as well as manhattan side. First timers in NY and magstay lang kami ng 1.5 days. Short side trip lang before heading back to PH. If NJ naman, what place would you recommend?

@babykiss_625 ^ Hmmm... the area of that Holiday Inn is a bit tricky, sis. A couple blocks away are the projects. But then going the other way towards Union St. is where Park Slope begins, one of the nicest areas of Brooklyn. That's just how NYC works, a few blocks can make a whole lot of difference. Since you're only spending a day and a half, it might alright. If you're planning on having a late night, do not take the subway home, take a cab (although the trick to this is that if you're in Manhattan hailing a yellow cab, get into the cab first, then tell them where you're going. A lot of cabbies deny riders who go to the outer boroughs, which is actually illegal, but do what I just told you and they can't kick you out).

@j_in_tokyo I hope you don't think I'm being pretentious. But I'm just giving you a candid, honest opinion on how New Yorkers feel about NYE in Times Square. I'm not a native New Yorker (prior to this I spent 13 years growing up in the SF Bay Area), but I've been here in NYC for the last nearly 9 years. So I'm not just talking out of my ass, I assure you

@mama_squeak Like I was telling babykiss_625, a few blocks can make a difference here in NYC. I actually lived in Brooklyn all this time I've been here and just very recently moved into Manhattan. I love Brooklyn. But you do have to know the area. If you'd like, you can do what babykiss_625 did and posted the address of the hotel she was looking into and I can try to do my best to advise you what might or might be around the area. Generally areas in Downtown BK are good, Cobble Hill, anything along the Brooklyn Promenade (but I'm afraid those might be pricey too). Williamsburg is another option for hotels, perhaps.

j_in_tokyo i guess sis june twentythree is the best person to answer your question. actually nakikitira lang ako sa manhattan everytime i go there. although this last trip, nakitira ako sa may queens. in my opinion, queens is not very nice (although jollibee is there so i was happy! and mga friends ko na din nagsabi na ingat nga daw doon.  Brooklyn nga daw is a better option. Thank God we were safe naman, lagi kaming nagca-cab pauwi, mga 2am, wala naman nangyari sa amin. just get a place close to a subway station para madali pumunta ng manhattan. talking about subway, i stayed only for 4.5 days pero sulit na sulit ang one week subway card. its USD30. one ride sa subway is USD2.50 or USD2.75 ata pero we used it a lot going around manhattan.

Me naman stayed in Queens last Summer 2012 and last Winter 2012.  Yes hindi ganon ka-ganda kasi para kang nasa Pinas (parang Taft Avenue) but I felt safe naman.  I guess kasi kasama ko family ko pagnaglalakad late at night.  Yes malapit kami sa Jollibee (walking distance) and neighbor lang namin si Johnny Air Cargo

May one time lang late at night na may nagwawala sa street, drunk and pinagsisipa yung steel roll-up ng isang store but kahit saan naman ata may ganon, drunk and nagwawala even sa loob ng subway.  May one time din na sa sobrang drunk nung old man natumba na siya at hindi na makatayo, minsan din amoy puke and piss yung loob ng elevator.  One time naman sa sobrang baho nung isang coach ng subway dahil sa puke, wala talaga nakakatiis mag-stay. Syempre kami naghahabol makasakay then we saw it empty (wow swerte) yun pala mabaho sa loob kaya walang tao! Haha! Lipat kami sa kabilang coach the next station   but I don't care.  Kahit naman dito sa Pinas may ganon e.  Kung hindi maarte ma-appreciate mo NYC and I think it goes with any countries.  May good and bad side.  Kaya nga tayo nagtra-travel because of the adventure d ba?  So carry na lang

Sabi naman ng BIL ko sa Brooklyn daw madami African-American?  Tama ba yun?  And never call them "Black" daw kundi mapapa-away kayo, is that true?  I know "nigga" is really not acceptable to them unless same race kayo.  Tama din ba yun?
