^ It's way too early to pump.  You risk doing damage to your breasts.  My pedia and my lactation counsellor both told me that most mothers pump way too early and this is not good - not very encouraging kasi kokonti lang makukuha mo and at the same time, nabubugbog your breasts and you are creating artificial demand.  Just focus on establishing your milk supply.

^ I always say it's when you have already established your supply and breastfeeding routine.  Pumping too early takes out the focus on making sure your baby has a good latch, you are correctly positioned, you are nursing on demand, baby's stools indicate that he/she is getting enough, etc.  Diyan muna dapat mag-focus ang ina na kapapanganak pa lang.  Huwag madaliin ang pag-pump, may tamang panahon para diyan.

I pumped around the 5th week after giving birth.  Take note that I had to express milk by hand for my babies who were in the hospital for 2 months.  The pedia strongly discouraged me to pump at that point.  Medyo nakakangawit mag-hand express but I got by naman.

Now, kung wala naman special circumstance requiring you to store milk so early, I really see no reason to pump at 3 weeks.  Your business is to nurse your baby on demand.  Pumping will add undue pressure to your body, not to mention to your mental well-being.  Just imagine kung makakuha ka ng less than 1 oz. lang in 10-15 minutes of pumping (and this is NORMAL in the early weeks dahil kokonti pa lang demand ng baby).  Panic mode ka for sure and you may even be tempted to supplement with formula, thinking (falsely) that since your pump output was low, your baby may not be getting enough.

^now i get it. That's what i'm planning to do, to direct feed for at least a month as much as possible ayaw ko nga mag pump but i need to store milk din. Ang hirap pala kung sakaling preemie babies, hand express lang pala di pwede i pump, at least now i know. No need to rush in buying a breast pump. Thanks marose.

^ My breast pump was ready by the time I gave birth (at 29 weeks ha).  It's difficult to go to the mall and choose/buy one when your babies are out.  It's better pa rin to have it ready.  Just don't bring it to the hospital.

re: lansinoh, check multiply/fb sellers. usually the pricing is around 350/25pcs milkbags. cheaper alternative is nanny milk bag. i got mine at baby & co ata (or was it sm... I can't remember anymore) for less than 250 but if I'm not mistaken it's also available at landmark and sm mismo.

and please use a proper milk storage bags, avoid using liners kahit na it's cheaper, or even worse, sandwich bags! :o

^ideally when can you start to pump?

i started 6 weeks after I gave birth. i bought pump when baby turned 1 month and we have established milk supply

i use spectra milk storage bags pero bihira na kami mag freeze. what I pump today is for tomorrow's consumption kaya sa bottles ko na lang nilalagay.

^need maging same temperature muna sis. like what you've pumped on 10AM can be combined with the 7AM after 2-3hrs of being in the ref. ang rule lang is same temp sila before i-mix. and milk pumped within 24hrs ang pwede i-mix.

sistah!

parang after a couple of weeks after i gave birth, i couldn't wait to pump milk and start storing. but my pedia advised me not to and instead just direct feed. ngayon na nagpu-pump pa rin ako everyday sa office, i relish evenings and weekends when i dont have to pump and we direct feed. mas madali talaga. nakakatamad kasi yung set up ng pump.

sis, what happens pag ang ni-mix is more than 24hrs na? say for this day may natira ako 2oz na nasa ref then tomorrow when i get home from the office mix ko yung na-pump ko that day dun sa balance na 2oz. same temperature na sila kasi maghapon naman nasa ref yung ni-pump ko then pauwi nasa bag with ice packs naman sya.
