Tama! for a new driver like me I opted to buy a second hand car...

expensive cellphone - oo nakakatuwa mag games games and music. pero aside from that wala na sayang ang depreciation

Kung wala lang akong Business plan I won't buy a smartphone.  But since I do, and I have to pay for the data bundles anyway due to work necessity I upgrade my phone as soon as I finish my contract with my current phone.  Sayang din yun, meron pa nga na zero downpayment as long as I get the 12months data bundle with them.

How about spa at facial do you refuse spend on those things?
Ako basta 50% off tapos malapit sa house namen gora  na ako.

Ayy ako Sis, I love spa, but not palagi naman.  Lalo na pag dyan ako sa Pinas mas mura kase dyan. Facial naman never pa ako naka-experience natatakot ako baka kase once simulan kelangan i-maintain, ngayon kase bihira ako magka-pimple and wala problem sa skin ko sa face.


Add ko lang sa hindi ko pagkakagastusan:

Bar / Clubbing - mausok na mahal pa drinks, sa bahay na lang ako hehe
Diet Products - I'd rather exercise and eat fruits & vegetable than buy this stuff
Crocs - I never like this kase hehe!

tablet. there's nothing much to do with it except candy crush and some browsing. not a good multitasker. just boring.
expensive smartphone.  same as above.
cold climate dog breeds. i really REALLY want a siberian husky but it breaks my heart everytime I see  one gasping like hell b/c of our hot and humid weather.

and i refuse spending my hard earned money on things i don't really like just to impress people.

A smartphone is actually one of the things
I regret I didn't buy earlier.

I was also of the opinion that a smartphone
has no added value over a basic phone. I was
using a black and white basic Nokia phone before
I got myself a smartphone.

Boy, was I wrong. I use my smartphone for.

- Music, with playlist, cover image, artist image, equalizer, the works
- Video, I can watch movies stored in my phone or even stream from my NAS
  (Basically a harddisk with network connection)
- View and Edit documents: Word,Excel,PowerPoint,PDF using OfficeSuite
- Ebook reader using Moon Reader, I read for entertainment but
  I also read books about tech so I keep my skills up to date.
- Used google maps inconjunction with GPS, never got lost since I got tis.
- Used as a budgetting tool thru YNAB
   -My wife has one too, any expenses she enters
    would get reflected in mine and vice versa
    so anytime, we can check our budget and where
    we stand financially
- Media Server: I can stream videos from my phone to
  my TV
- Scanner thru CamScanner, the scans I take look like
  they were really scanned thru a real scanner pero its
  just the camera and the app adjust the image so it looks
  flat.
- Calendar thru google Calendar, I can add events, birthdays
  and I can have reminders sent. and its syncd across multiple
  devices kasi its in the cloud.
- I can check my email thru the Gmail app very easily and
  I can view any attachments thru OfficeSuite.
- I have google drive where I have all of my important documents.
  This came in useful when I was in the hospital just a few months
  ago and they needed a scanned copy of my marriage certificate.
 
  So, I just got our marriage certificate from google drive which is
  in pdf form, emailed it using my gmail app to the billing
  person's email. No sweat!

  I have almost all important documents scanned by CamScanner and
  saved in the cloud thru google drive so its accessible anywhere.
- Very versatile notebook apps which allows notes to have pics, sketches
  using your fingers, voice notes, etc although I rarely use this app
- Voice calls thru skype and free internet calls and messages too
- Online banking, like I have two accounts with BDO and I only have the
  ATM for account 1 and all of my money is in account 2, no sweat, just
  turn on data and login to myBDO and transfer the funds.
- Camera, the picture quality is on par with my old 2009 digicam so
  I don't bring it anylonger. Plus if you have an HDR app, the picture
  comes out way better than my digicam. You can even upload your pictures
  directly to Instagram or whatever although I do not do this but whatever
  floats your boat

  And the various other cool camera apps, where it can transform your
  ordinary picture to watercolor, to look like a comic, etc
- Powerful calculators, I have unit converters, i.e. meter to inches,
  peso to dollar, etc
  Scientific calculators..
  I only use the unit converters so far but I imagine a college student
  would probably get a lot of mileage from the scientific calculator app
- Magazine apps like Flipboard. I usually use this as I am trying to sleep.
  Reading news and sometimes looking at food related articles.
- Remote desktop app, so I can remote into my PC from anywhere if my wife
  is reporting any issues.

Just saying, maybe you just didn't give it a chance?

I refuse to spend too much on:
-Concert tickets. Later on, mapapalabas sa tv din pala.
-Make-up. OK na ang basic unless I want to be a make-up artist
- Check-up sa doctor. That's why I wanna splurge on healthy food (Organic!!!) keysa sa doctor.
-Shoes. Not a good investment.

para sakin anything na obligated ka na mag pay monthly (not all), ok lang yung dsl kase you need it naman. pero the postpaid plans ayun ang ayaw ko kase may mga times na wala ka naman katext or nasa may wifi area ka lagi so walang silbi yung postpaid plan mo. and also yung mga overpriced items, iin buying clothes i usually visit f21 then look for new trends then go to landmark or sm then tignan ko kung may kamukha yung clothes or maybe yung hawig lang sa porma. kase s f21 1k+ isa lang mabibili mo sa landmark 1k+ mo may 3 or more clothes ka na..

That's right.  Sometimes, being expensive does not mean waste of money but worth investing for.

if that question was for me, my answer is i gave it a try but i ended up not using those apps you mentioned.  i use my phone just to make calls and texts. i rarely take photos with it, edit pictures, etc. and i don't actually need to buy an expensive smartphone just to use calculator, convert units, play music, check emails and calendar. even a cheap phone can do that. i consider high end smartphones a waste of money because i simply don't need one, and thus i refuse spending on it.

i have separate gadgets for listening to music, ebook reading, taking pictures, and i don't edit photos with a phone app. i watch movies on tv or desktop - where i do all the other things you mentioned. it's a lot easier with a desktop, really.

well to each his own.  if smartphones do wonders for you then great but they never do for me.

Oh that's too bad... maybe it was
a few years ago when you tried it out?

My wife always had the better phone and
when I try hers out its sluggish, the wi-fi
is very spotty, photos don't look good and
the battery drains too fast for my taste.

She gives her old phones to her sisters because
I don't want to use it and I love my basic phone,
its very durable and the battery lasts for a long
time.

But now, smartphones aren't as pathetic as a few
years ago. the screens are very very good. sarap

But yeah, to each his own. Maybe after a few years
you'll find it useful to have a device that can
do it all.

Worrying about insurance, looking for a parking
space, time and effort on maintaining the car
is not my idea of a worthwhile investment.

My wife really wants us to get one though and
the only plus she can give me is that we can go
to places like tagaytay on a whim. pffft there's
always the bus. If its popular enough, may public
vehicles naman papunta dun right?

^A car is still ideal IMHO for emergency purposes and you can roam around tagaytay or a place where there's good access to public tranportation without any need to rent a car.

I also thought that way before, why need car, smartphone when I can commute and use a regular GSM phone.  Closed-minded kumbaga.  I stuck to that notion without even trying to have one! Proud pa ako. 

But when I had an asthma attack ng hatinggabi, i dunno how my mom was able to take me to the hospital, we had to wait an hour for tricycle and taxi outside our village.  Now, when we bought ourselves a car,  when one time, our neighbor had a heart attack, they knocked on our door to help take them to the hospital. 

A car is also very efficient as when you need to go to the office and there's a heavy downpour, di ka mababasa.

I am based in SG but I refused to buy a car here.  Why?  Because transportation system is very efficient even on emergency.  You can roam around the whole country without any need for a car.

In the Phils, I need a car.  Why?  Because the transportation is not that efficient to guarantee that I can go around the city ng hindi nahoholdap and hindi nauusukan.

Also, I thought I can live with my Nokia E60 (which I still use) but now, I cannot live without my iPhone because I can read emails while I am not on my office desk and take pictures during lunchouts / dinner without having to bring any camera.  E60 picture quality ain't that good.

I realized that we say these things because we can't afford it for now. 

But if for instance you have Php15,000,000 in your bank, would you still stick to your thinking which is to not "waste" money on a car or a gadget? Even if you got promoted as manager or a top honcho of a company?  Magcocommute ka pa rin?

Regarding smartphones - It needs to have a data bundle or else parang wala ring saysay for me.  Although I must say I like the fact that I don't need to carry a lot of gadgets kase almost all the things I need I can do with my smartphone - camera, diary/calendar, calculator, ebookreader, GPS (yup no need to buy a separate GPS gadget), etc. so in the long run I did save a lot of space and money

Regarding 2nd hand cars - I bought a 2nd hand car but I made sure that it is good and well maintained.  So far ok naman and I didn't have any problems with it naman, aside from changing the tires and batteries na talaga namang kelangan i-change since 5yr old na yung car ko.  True walang sakit ng ulo ang brand new car, but for me I just can't spend money on a brand new car YET.  Maybe next time kapag confident na confident na ako magdrive.  Sis Xtine I agree sa Pinas kelangan talaga ng kotse.

For me Spending money on Gadgets and things that I know I need and will use is no big deal.  Pero kapag yung meron na nga akong Smartphone, bibili pa ako ng ebook reader (which I did and look where it is now - collecting dust at the bedside table), Tablet, etc... overkill na yun heheh...but that's just me.

Wow, I guess your situation is very different
than mine.
If I were in your shoes, I might also think about
getting a car seriously.

But we live right near EDSA, lots of people at all
hours even during the twilight hours, 1am-5am.

And since its right near EDSA and bus stations, taxis
are just plentiful.

So, I guess my situation is sort of how your situation
is in SG.

Granted there are cases when a car would definitely
have made it easier, but it just doesn't offset the
time, money and effort to maintain a car.

This might change when we finally have a baby though :p

You do have a point about salary.. Maybe that's why
I finally opened up?
My phone would have cost me my entire half month's pay
but now its like 1/4 of my half's pay na lang.
I have more room kumabaga.

^For me car is necessity na lalo na that we are living in Antipolo. I don't like going somewhere taking bus, taxi or tricycle since ang dami naming dalang gamit ng mga bata kapag namamasyal.

For the smartphone, as a businesswoman like me its very useful. I can check my clients email and send updates to my clients from time to time. We can also access our emails and contacts abroad kahit wala kami sa bahay. Kahit nanoood kami ng sine or namamasyal kasama ang anak hindi na kami mag alala na baka may biglang dapat gawin para sa business namin at hindi kami updated. We can always check email and contact our mentors abroad. Sa iba they don't need smartphone but I think depende talaga yan sa lifestyle.
For us, having smartphone and line phone is necessity. Kung wala ang mga to, malamang affected ang income namin.

Yes the GPS haha I'm so bad with directions kase...didn't get a separate device I have the phone naman and same lang din.  Although I use the data more due to my work.  Sometimes kase off site kame or in another office, hassle yung makikitanong ng wifi and passwords, so easier for me to connect the laptop na lang sa phone ko. one click ok na plus requirement ko din kase imonitor mga emails ng boss ko so yeah I need the data for my phone or else useless sya sa akin kase wala akong magagawang trabaho.  I have a 10gb data everymonth, hindi nauubos yan pero worth it naman ang pag-avail ko nyan. 

although I must say nung umuwi ako sa pinas I didn't buy a sim card for my smartphone, I used the old nokia phone and I was able to survive. I didn't need it kase during vacation.  So yeah, depende talaga yan sa needs natin.

in my case, you are wrong. i can buy the latest iphone right now but i just won't.

if i had 15M spare money, then i would buy a mini cooper, high end camera, sound system, high end music player, hard core gaming system, panerais, rolexes, cartier, hermes and other luxury bags and makeup kung kakasya. hehe. a high end smartphone would be the last on my list. it just doesn't appeal that much to me. then again, to each his own.

^True depende talaga sa Priority and Needs.  There are certain things talaga na kahit na you have the money to buy those eh nagdadalawang isip ka, and with me kapag may 2nd thoughts that means hindi ko kelangan.
