Foods to avoid during pregnancy:
Your sushi cravings will have to wait until you deliver. ALL raw fish should be avoided. Additionally, stay away from shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, tuna steaks, canned tuna, sea bass, oysters, marlin, halibut, pike, walleye, white croaker, and largemouth bass. These fish contain high levels of mercury, dangerous to you and your baby during pregnancy.
You don’t have to give up your morning cup of Jo’ – but you should limit caffeine in your diet to less than 200 mg per day. That’s about one cup a day. Remember, chocolate and chocolate foods as well as soy products also contain caffeine.
Listeria
Listeria is a nasty little bacteria found in water and soil. During pregnancy, you are more susceptible to getting it than at any other time. Since Listeria is killed by proper cooking - it is most often found in undercooked meats, uncooked veggies, un-pasteurized milk (as well as by products) and processed foods. In other words, cook your foods mama, and stay away from hot dogs and deli meats.
Salmonella
Salmonella affects around 60,000 people per year. The bacteria causes food poisoning and can be very dangerous – especially because the bacterium can actually pass through the placenta. Stay away from raw eggs, foods made with raw eggs (like eggnog, cookie or cake dough), uncooked meat and poultry. It is also found in canned foods, soft cheeses (like brie), and un-pasteurized dairy products.
