When to Vaccinate your pets?
« on: January 13, 2012, 08:20:39 pm »
I almost lost my dream dog due to Distemper 2 years ago and because of that, I sweared to myself that I will always make sure that my dogs' vaccines will be updated for the rest of their lives. But based on my researches, yearly and too much vaccinations are not the safest thing to do, hence it can even pose danger in their health in the long run.

Since I worry almost about everything with my pets, I prepare myself for every possible event that could happen in the future. I have a very wild imagination and sometimes I even imagine what would happen if one day they got very ill, and what if they die, what would happen to me? ;D Because of this, I don't stop from facing my screen from reading any possible source that I could get. And since my vet's vaccination protocol is kind of different from the usual, she uses the 8in1 and the kennel cough vaccine, I became worried when I found out that too much shots can do more harm than good. I have been looking for sources that can help me with this, but it is very difficult to find sources (for there is a non-written rule that pet owners are not allowed to question vets' protocols ::) ) that is why this issue is not usually tackled. Obviously I can't just ask vets regarding this, dahil baka pag nagtanong ako, palayasin na ako sa clinic nila ;D But lucky me, I have come across a link that tackles canine and feline vaccination. Please be reminded that the vet who made this is not your ordinary vet, this article might be new to many, but please have to time to read it and say your thoughts, opinions, comments after reading.

hi again sis.

this topic of vaccinations is also confusing for me. kasi iba-iba ang sagot sa akin ng mga vets.
like, itong new puppy. before i got her, may 3 shots na sya ng 5in1. 2 wks apart yun. i thought 4 shots lang ang needed to complete the whole series. when our new vet checked her record, 2 shots pa daw ang required. i asked pero yun daw ang dapat na protocol kasi she received her vaccines 6 wks old pa lang sya.  :(

before when our dog had puppies. we vaccinated them kapag 3 months na sila. i think may nabasa ako sa isang forum na at 6wks pag you give them vaccines, you'd just be killing off the maternal antibodies that were transferred to them. it made sense, so i followed that tapos strict lang kami sa alaga sa kanila but none of them contracted any illness. all of them were ok naman.

now with my present pup...i just had the vet administer the anti-rabies vaccine when she turned 16wks. then after 8 wks maybe, another dose ng 5in1 when she's 6months old na lang. although i still don't bring her out. (actually i bring my pets outside the perimeter of our house when they're a year old na, never before that)

it's my personal belief lang.  ;)

halos same tayo ng belief sis, at ganyan din nangyari sa shih tzu ko, nakuha namin sya 3mos old with 3 shots tapos yung last sched is last shot na dapat diba, pero pagpunta ko sa nearby vet, sabi kailangan pa ng 2 shots of 8in1 plus kennel cough. Wala na akong ginawa, pumayag din ako.

kaso ang mas nakakaconfuse dito, magkaiba ang setting natin sa US kung saan galing yung articles, mas strict sila when it comes to pet ownership compared dito at ang naiisip kong rason kaya iba-iba ang take ng vet when it comes to vaccines is that maraming stray dogs sa atin at marami pa ring unvaccinated pets, so tama bang isipin na nagiingat sila sa viruses na pwedeng mahawa mga alaga natin? Yung bulldog ko, nakuha ko sya at 3mos old with two shots, other articles are saying na okay lang kahit 2 shots and the vaccines can last for up to 3 year naman, but still he got infected with distemper. super ingat ako sa kanya, hindi ko rin nilalabas ng bahay, kaya nagtaka ako bakit sya nahawa. With this experience, naiisip ko rin na baka iba talaga ang case dito sa atin with that in the US, okay sana yung titer testing, ELISA test ata ang tawag dito, kaso it would cost each dog around 750-800pesos for the test kit pa lang, yung basic shots pa lang magastos na, pano pa itong tests for anti-bodies.

i agree. our local protocols for vaccinations (even for humans) galing sa states. kasi usually it's the big companies who sponsor the studies kaya walang pang-local settings. :( so may issue ang ibang sectors dba regarding overvaccination...dba kaloka talaga? ::) i once met a vet who told me kelangan ulitin ang whole series ng vaccination kapag you fail to bring you dog every 2 wks. needless to say, hindi ko tinuloy ang pagpapa-bakuna sa kanya, feeling ko kasi gusto nya lang kumita, sorry. >:(

sa bulldog mo what age nabigay ang dalawang vaccines? vet ba ang nagbigay nung shots? some breeders kasi sila na lang kasi they want to save. may nakukuha kasi sila nyan wala pang php 200 eh. nandun din yung question kung tama ba ang pag-transport and storage ng vaccine before it was administered? ilang months na sya nung nagka-distemper? nakakatakot talaga yang distemper kasi airborne sya dba? :( i'm happy for you that your pet survived it. may kilala ako a long time ago, puppy nya namatay din daw sa distemper, yun ang sabi nung vet, pero wala atang locally available na test dyan dba? :(

yun nga ang nakakalito kasi usually yung mga nakikita nating articles and rules from US, as pet owners, nakakalito talaga kung sino ang dapat sundin. May local breeders din akong nakikita who follow US protocols, kaso kakaunti talaga sila at feeling ko once sabihin natin yung suggestion nila sa local vets, di sila papayag at lelecture-an lang tayo ;D marami na rin kaming naencounter na ganyang vet, yung kailangan daw ulitin from the start ang vaccines kung maglapse ka kahit few days lang. Pag ganyan common sense and guts na lang pairalin kung after the money lang talaga yung vet.

Andito pa yung previous records and rx nya haha, wala akong itinapon. Around 2mos sya nung first series of shots June 20 and july 3, 2008 yung date, 2 shots lang ang narecieve nya. Then First week of June 2009 nagkaroon ng distemper, kaka-1 year nya lang nun. Yan yung reason kaya paranoid na ako pagdating sa shots nila, I almost lost my panganay because of my carelessness  :( Sobrang guilty and depressed ako nung nagkasakit sya, I am the only one who takes care of him kasi, ako talaga nagpalaki sa kanya that's why lahat din ng problema ako yung sumalo. Buti na lang talaga he's a fighter at naagapan kundi, baka di ko napatawad sarili ko because of my stupidity and neglect. Available na locally sis yung test kit, my bulldog and another family dog underwent that test, but not all vet clinics have it, even yung cure for parvo at distemper bilang lang sa daliri ang gumagawa. Kaso nga diba ang suggestion is to undergo muna that test before sila bigyan ng vaccine, kaso I don't think it's practical lalo na kung marami ang dog.

Some other virus like Parainfluenza,Adenovirus type 2,Distemper,Herpesvirus and Canine Reovirus are also components of the Kennel Cough, included na yan sa typicals shots nila so parang wala naman ata talagang sole vaccine for this.

This coming Feb, sched na ng bulldog ko for his yearly vaccines, I still don't know kung avail pa namin yung kennel cough kasi andun na rin sya sa 8in1 diba? My panganay has weak immune system, marami syang health issues siguro because of the distemper na rin, at naaawa ako sa kanya kasi tahimik lang talaga sya, typical looks ng bulldogs na steady at calm lang, mahirap malaman if something's wrong kasi very quiet talaga sya unless makakita ng food  ;D

^naku sis, don't be too hard on yourself naman. mukhang it was meant na sa iyo talaga yung bulldog mo kasi ipaglalaban mo talaga sya. ;) yung sa friend ko more than a decade na yun, baka wala pang test kit nun dito. hehe. pero sis, ang sabi ng vet namin before, yung test kit hindi naman sya yung gold standard for diagnosing parvo, distemper, ehrlichiosis, etc. he told me this kasi kinulit ko sya kung ano ba ang use nung mga test kit? kasi sis, gusto nya i-subject yung dog ko sa lahat ng test kit becoz may fever at loss of appetite. ::) hehe. actually daw, ang nade-detect ng test kit is just the antibodies produced for that infection. so you wouldn't really know if positive sya kasi he was exposed to the disease (and successfully fought it off) before, kung galing ba sa maternal antibodies yun or galing ba sa vaccination na naibigay. i'm glad he was honest enough to tell me. kasi sayang din dba instead na pang-gamot na, sa lab test na non-specific naman pala mapupunta yung money.

^sadyang worrier lang ako sis kaya ganito ako pagdating sa mga alaga ko  ;D but you're right, he is really meant to be with me, because when I'm about to lose him, he stayed and fought the battle, and when I thought that there's no other way to cure him, I've found out that his system got rid of the virus. I told myself na baka challenge lang ito sa amin, perhaps He is just testing kung hanggang saan ang kaya ko. Even up until this day, struggle kami sa health nya, recurring ang problems, minsan papasayahin ako ng ilang months pero after few months babalik ulit ang mange, eye infection, loose stools, but I can't just give up on him, na-love at first ata ako sa sweet boy na ito and I will do everything to give him the life that he deserves. I only hope na mas tumagal ang pagsasama namin because bulldogs are known to have a short life span :)

Sis di ko maview yung link, di kasi ata napost as direct link, edit mo na lang so I can check. Yung test kit ba na nasabi ng vet sayo is ImmunoComb or Canine VacciCheck? Kasi ito yung ginamit with my bulldog, modified ELISA test daw ito and aside from checking the antibodies from the vaccines, it can also diagnose whether the infection is recent or nakasurvive na ang dog. I will explain it further once mabasa ko reply mo.

Yan ang nakakainis especially sa mga taong seryoso sa mga alaga nila, others kasi treat dogs as objects or business, some people just don't see any worth in them. Sa iba pwedeng wala lang ang aso, pero sa iba they are part of the family, they are treated like our own kids and we are willing to provide for them just to make sure that they get the best life that they can get. It's hard pag ang kalaban ay yung exact opposite, no matter how hard we try to change their mindset, they just won't listen and we can't convince them and sometimes all we can do is to pity these poor dogs. I just wish that someday, marealize nila that these dogs will forever be loyal to us,no matter what happens or whatever kind of treatment we give them, they won't ever complain and continue to love and treat us like Gods, and it's very rare to find a treasure who does that so it is best to take good care of them.

^hindi nya ata na-mention yung terms (immunocomb o vaccicheck) na yan sa akin sis, so dko alam...ano ba ang meron say, 5 yrs ago? yun ata last naming pagkikita nung vet na yun. hehe.

http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/[textspeak!]/150225.htm&word=serology

anyway, i'm glad iba na pala ngayon. may natutunan na naman ako from you. :)

Sis may textspeak daw yung link mo kaya di maview, kalerkey itong GT hahaha!

I've found a very informative video for ImmunoComb, check mo sis:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COPCn-XtvUc

Wala akong makita sa net na exactly the same sa manual namin, pero halos ganito sya:
http://www.drugs.com/vet/immunocomb-canine-vaccicheck.html

Our manual (March 2010 version ito, June 2010 naman yung nasa links) states that "Aside from hematology and blood chemistry, serology is also widely used in diagnosing Canine Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Distemper. Serology provides a broader picture of the dog's immunologic status. The immune system is composed of 2 antibodies--IgM and IgG. In the initial days after infection or vaccination, IgM antibodies are produced in large amounts. Later IgM titers decline while IgG levels increase. This indicates that elevated levels of IgM means that there is a recent infection. While for healthy dogs that survive the acute phase of infection or were given recent vaccinations, there is an absence of IgM antibodies but an elevated IgG titer."-Immunocomb.

So ganyan ang explanation sakin ng vet, my dog survived na raw at kaya mataas yung levels ng IgG and antibodies nya for Distemper is because recent ang vaccination, Feb 1, 2010 ginawa yung VacciCheck while Aug. 23, '10 yung last vaccination. After malaman ang results, she advised na bigyan ng vaccines yung dog ko, dapat pala hindi ako pumayag diba? Kasi ang purpose ng VacciCheck is to check the levels antibodies to avoid overvaccination, so bakit nya binigyan ng shots kung mataas pa ang antibodies? Hmmmmm, was there something fishy that happened? ::)

Ito sis yung gamit namin ngayon Canvac 8 DHPPiL. Before CV and DA2PPvL (Corona,Distemper,Adenovirus type 2,Parainfluenza,Parvo) yung sa kanya. Masyadong technical yung words sa 8in1 sticker pero based on my research, its against distemper, infectious hepatitis, infectious laryngotracheitis of dogs, parvovirosis of dogs, parainfluenza of dogs, and three types of leptospira. Tanong ko ulit kung ano yung additional, parang Lepto ata and not CJ Corona hehe virus eh.
