Tipping Practices: When to give tips and how much
« on: January 13, 2012, 02:56:51 pm »
I wonder mga sisses. How much do you tip? Who are the persons whom you give your tip to? When is it the right time to tip?

Or do you simply decide not to give tips at all? Or avoid places that troubles you with the tipping practice?

(sorry mods, not sure if this is for this forum or under "Savings and Investments")

^ I wonder how much sis, in particular doon sa parlor. How about that person who gave you that foot spa massage? Na-ti-tip na rin sila?

A trip to the parlor could get expensive nowadays no?

Doon sa bagger, marami sa palengke namin dito. But actually I don't give tips sa baggers - I negotiate their price before they agree to carry them. They still agree to the price kahit mababa, kasi nakikita nila na mas malaki ang kita nila carrying the bag than selling plastic bags. LOL.

I leave a P20 bill usually when dining out at restos for two (not the very expensive ones). But I do see some people not leaving any tip rin, or barya lang ang iniiwan. But I would be open to giving P50 lalo kung marami kaming kumakain.

i give tip on restaurants which doesn't charge service fee... usually around P50... or the change/excess...

i give tip on baggers who help me with my groceries... P20

sa salon, i give tip to the one who blow dried my hair/back masssage, shampoo/scalp massage, and to the one who did my haircut :)

ito lagi nasa isipan ko whenever i go out and pamper myself.... tipong, how much should i give as tip?

ako kasi, kapag mabait ang tao na nagbibigay service sa akin, i give tip and commonly it's p50-100.   so kung hindi mabait or maasikaso, i only give p20.

Interesting!

Is tipping really customary nowadays? Or optional pa rin if I just have the bare minimum to cover the bill? Faux pas ba if I won't give any?

It's not my practice though, as I have always felt that it's their job to do what I have asked. Besides, dami ko na kasing pwedeng i-tip. I drive a car, and that's another set of persons to tip again (from the gasoline guy who checks the air on my car's tires, mechanic, the one who washes windshields, pati pag nasiraan pa ako sa daan).

How about those fastfood delivery guys pa, the one who picks up laundry, those people who delivers the gas tank, taxis, car wash boys, parking boys ... I could go on and on.

Count all the P20s to P100s that we tip on those service crews, and it could amount to hundreds each month just giving out tips away!

But even then, I learned that tips in the US are almost required - kasi yun ang sahod nila. But I think that, unlike those waitresses in the US, the people here are still getting their salaries.

To be honest I have mixed feeling on these tipping practices. I love and hate that practice. I'm not happy giving out money (because I'm a moderate saver), and yet I'm not also happy and feel too guilty not being able to give anything.

Also I think it would not be fair to deliver bad service to a customer just because that person wasn't able to give any tip!

The Japanese find tipping offensive in their culture. They just won't accept them. I think that's nice and avoids the complicated worry of whether to give tips or not, because they are expected to deliver good work while not expecting something in return.

I heard the Chinese don't tip. Is it true? Or have they embraced that culture of tipping at least here in the Philippines.

mga fastfood, rice, and gas tank delivery guys, salesladies who would assist me for almost an hour just to get the right size, color, design that i want, etc. --- i don't give extra.   Lagi ko naiisip, trabaho nila yon.

Taxis, or people who look for a cab, car wash boys, parking boys, waiters, spa/salon attendants, porters who carry my luggages are mostly the people I give tips.

sometimes i tip, sometimes i dont...

for salons and spas,  i do tip if i liked the service and if i intend to frequent the place ... pagbalik mo kasi iba yung pag-aatend nila sayo and they give exceptional service kapag good tipper ka... natatandaan kasi nila yun...
saka i go to these places para magdestress, i dont want to deal with someone na so-so lang ang service kapag tanda nila na hindi ka goodtipper or you dont tip at all..

restaurants/fastfood - i dont tip generally.. unless i had a complain and they handled it well..
i love trying different restaurants so i dont need na "paalaga" sa staff...

gasboys - ewan ko si hubby... i dont deal with those kasi :P

taxi - yes..  fare + 20 php ... para wala na lang masabe ..  so yung monumento to sm north 80 php lang dapat 100 na.. pero kapag mabilis metro, i give the amount i always pay.. away kung away.. pero siyempre nakababa na ako sa matao na place ;D

sm staff - i always shop at sm marilao with 2 kids and i always  end uo with 2-3 pushcart full of stuff kaya we were always assisted to the car.. so i always give 50php to manong kasi wilkins pa lang mabigat na ;D

@freelance - sabi ni sis ko, when in cruise,  japanese are moderate tippers daw... americans are great tippers (well white americans ha :-X) brits are low tippers daw, chinese, minsan...as in "gaano kadalas ang minsan" ;D

As far as I know their service crews rely on tips as their salaries.

Anyway, Japanese considering tipping as rude and insulting in their culture - a lot has been written about it: http://goo.gl/RbfKz

mga fastfood, rice, and gas tank delivery guys, salesladies who would assist me for almost an hour just to get the right size, color, design that i want, etc. --- i don't give extra.   Lagi ko naiisip, trabaho nila yon.

Yun nga, I find it difficult to decide whether to tip or not.

Or the one who do the facials? Haircuts?

So no tipping then?

But still I see people who tip here for those services. Malaki rin ang amount - P100 at most for the parlor and spa services. Guilty if you don't give anything, and you feel that the money is "sayang" if you give any.

gasboys - ewan ko si hubby... i dont deal with those kasi :P

Ako kasi I don't have a hubby so I deal with another set of persons to tip. Imagine how much I spend for just tipping people each month! One set of people to do pamper me, while the others to maintain my car. And those people who help you carry things, eh!

Pati nga minsan sa government office dito sa Pinas eh. Nagpapa-tip pa raw at may pakuha-kuha sila ng cellphone number. LOL.

we give tips. nakasanayan na rin. it's very rare that i don't give tips. looking at your posts, parang napaisip ako kung sayang ba yung pera o hindi. but remembering my feelings when i give tips, ayos naman eh. maluwag naman sa dibdib ko. so i guess, ok lang. well, that's me. to each his/her own, 'ika nga.

for salon hairstylist: 50-100php. there was a time na hindi ako nagbigay ni singkong duling. sobrang inis ko kasi i told him to cut 2-3inches off my hair. que horror! he cut a good 8 inches off of it! imagine? hindi na ako bumalik ever sa salon na yun.

sa nag blow dry: 20. dadating ang time na magiging hairstylist na sya if he's persistent with what he does THEN, he'll earn the tips we give to the hairdresser. 'Til then. ;)

massage therapist: pag massage lang, 50. pag package ang kinuha namin ni hubby, 100 each to our therapists. well, depende pa din sa satisfaction rating.

parking boy/manong/lady: 10-20 and a smile ;) ;). sa kanila nakasalalay kung babalikan mo yung kotse mo ng may gasgas sa gilid.

kulang ang list, di kinaya ng cellphone. :P

sa SM boy who helped with the grocery: 20

gasoline boy for the tire gauge or who cleaned the windshield: 10

wiater: 30-60.
pag may service charge na: coins or 20 :P

No tips to gas tanks, LBC guys na. they frequent the house and i usually dont have change with me when they come.

hotel or resort staff: 50-500. depends on how long our stay is and how personalized the vacation was.

usually, when you give sa resort staff, mas mafi-feel mo yung personal touch sa service. they see to it na maeenjoy mo talaga yung bakasyon mo. again, it's just us. depende pa din talaga sa ibang tao.

Now it worries me that people in the parlor/spa are expecting tips. Do they seriously feel bad if they aren't given any just because my budget is enough for their prices?

If you have availed any discount, do you still give tips?

Now I wonder, how much for tipping the lady who did a rebond job? (This person is, I think, worth tipping for).

Gone are the times when someone helps you willingly without expecting something in return. People nowadays are just too willing to accept tips and gifts no?
