(Gangnam Style is much more than the funny dance moves. It is, more fundamentally, a social and cultural commentary on South Korea's materialistic hedonism.)

The word Gangnam-Style orginated from the place called Gangnam-gu, the wealthiest district in Seoul. Gangnam-gu is the equivalent of Ayala Center of Makati, or New York's Upper East Side. In short, andito lahat yung pinaka mayayamang tao sa Korea and lahat na din ng mga poser. Kabilang dito yung minention sa music video yung term na doenjong-nyeo or "doenjong girl."

Doenjong girls are those who eat very cheap soybean ramen noodles, called doengjong, but who spend ridiculous amounts of money on Starbucks and Coach/Michael Koors handbags.  In short, these are conspicuous consumption people. Those girls who try to attract attention by appearing "chic" and "classy" and "sophisticated" so that men can chase after them.

Eto yung equivalent ng mga glutathione-overdosed 20something college students whom you see at UCC  trying to show off their pre-paid iphone4s and sipping as little as possible from their tall cafe latte.

At present, that has come to be the definition, and in fact the paragon of what our society calls the "sex and the city" type of girl... every girl wants to look, act, speak and think like Sarah Jessica Parker. Strong, aggressive, intelligent.

Which is why Sex and The City is the most catastrophic thing that ever occured after Women's Lib in the 60's and 70's: shows like that give women a false sense of power over their bodies and the wallets. How many women really live like those you see in the Upper East Side? Materialism is a new form of female self-imposed subjugation. If before men imposed standards on women, now women are imposing standards upon themselves to please men.

If that is the definition of an intelligent woman, in this day and age, then no thanks.

I should like my girlfriend to be that quintessential Maria Clara. Veil on her head, rosary on her hands and eyes down-cast, like that of Our Blessed Virgin Mother. (Although she should be, at the very least, eager to please)

Ang ayoko pala eh yung babaeng nagmamarunong at mas marunong pa dun sa gumagastos, which is obviously the guy. I'd still prefer that humble, docile sexy woman over the woman who tries ever so hard to appear domineering.

Hello. No, that's not our definition of an intelligent woman. Poser/high maintenance/social climber more like it, all of which have nothing to do whether a girl has the smarts or not.

What I'm getting from your posts is that you sound like you want someone who's easy to get along with and who fits your lifestyle. Meron ka naman mahahanap na ganun na matalino din, or maganda rin, or both. I'd totally get it if you choose beauty because you want someone attractive in your life--I don't think there's anything shallow about that, preference mo yun--but to choose them over intelligent women because of the belief that the latter are more difficult to control is, I think, flawed reasoning kasi hindi naman lahat ganun.

very well said..
about the last paragraph, pag guy pala ang gumagastos dapat walang say ang girl.. now i know why most women prefer to have a job..so they can spend not just for vanity but also for hobbies or activities like reading and traveling without asking for the guy's money..at para na rin di masumbatan na nakaasa lang.

the thing with intelligence is that it is, for the most part, acquired. how we look, on the other hand, is not something we have control over (and i mean naturally). therefore, i'd pick the latter, para naman maranasan ko sa buhay ko kung paano maging maganda. haha, just kidding. masarap lang to play around with different ideas with regard to the whole beauty vs brains debate.

i agree with the op, each one has its advantages in life. in terms of relationships though (since it's on the Looking for Love forum hehe), it's how a guy carries himself that ultimately triggers my attraction to him. kahit hindi conventionally gwapo ang isang lalaki, if he exudes confidence, maaaring siya na ang pinaka poging lalaki sa paningin ko. neither does intelligence guarantee good conversation. he can have all these smart ideas inside his head, but can he communicate them well? gwapo/matalino nga, pero maganda ba ugali? there's just so many things to consider, depende na lang kung ano ang type ng tao.

So what's what?

A bit of both sana. Half half kung pwede but if one is to choose, i guess physically attractive. Wala namang taong bobo eh, just plain lazy. Anyone can be intelligent and smart, you just need to work for it lang. Mas enjoy mgbasa ng libro kesa mgpa retoke ng face, masakit pa yun!

^ may point ka sis.
I also want both. Para sakin, kahit beauty, kelangan pagtrabahuhan. Tumatanda din tayo, therefore, one has to maintain din.

If I am to choose one lang, I would go for intelligence. Because for me, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Beauty can exude kahit di ka kagandahan through:
- sex apppeal
- poise
- good posture and physique
- good skin
- good ettiquette and dressing
- good hair
- good hygiene
- being confident
- and being intelligent by itself

I-add ko lang pala, through the years ha, sa nakikita ko, mas madali gumanda kesa tumalino.
I've taught students before (tutor), pag walang brains talaga, kelangan step by step talaga at isa isahin mo. Sa work naman, no matter how much you explain ang isang issue, kung walang common sense, nakakaiyak! :(

Kaya sakin, it's not as straightforward as people think na reading equates to intelligence. Yes reading helps but it doesn't guarantee intelligence.

5. You'll need a stroke of luck to make money out of good looks. With intelligence, you're more in control and all you touch is a stroke of genius. The brain's purchasing power is higher and more sustainable than that of a pretty face.

;D

I like this.  Pag brains, it is more controllable kasi ikaw ang gumawa ng decision, what you can do and will do.

Pag beauty, nakasalalay sa ibang tao and luck to make things happen for you.

^ true yung sinabi mo about reading. kasi kung di rin naman narretain ang binasa or di kayang iprocess/iapply sa ginagawa, balewala din..

this thread reminds me of my highschool friend. lahat na lang ng school na mapasukan e scholar sya dahil sa sobrang ganda (no exaggeration). nakakainggit isipin dahil yung mga may utak e katakot-takot na pruweba pa para patunayang worthy kang makalibre ng tuition. pagdating sa pagaapply sa work, napansin ko din dito sa amin na may advantage kung maganda ka (wag lang boplaks na boplaks ha). pag meron kang naka-tie sa interview/exams, ang nagiging deciding factor e ganda. downside lang napapaginitan ng mga bitter na babae sa office (laging sinusungitan, namamagnify 10x ang fault :D ).

kung ako papipiliin, like cosmic girl, half half din sana. mahirap din kasing matalino ka nga, lagi naman nagkakaroon ng prejudgement dahil sa looks mo or sobrang ganda na walang masyado brains, wala masyado sumeseryoso..

We talked about this topic sa barkada, and one interesting response is from a guy.

Another case for extremely beautiful side, I know someone who's not "that intelligent" but now occupies a very influential post in the gov't (legislative).  I'm not saying she slept her way up to the post as she was elected but before she became an elected official, her "beauty" catapulted her to high positions thus opening doors for her.  And rumor goes that if the chamber needs to "convince" an influential foreign head, they send her to do the convincing.  Beauty does it!

Sa work, being the girl, hindi ba nakakainis na you are merely judged by your looks and not about your performance?

May ex colleague kasi sya dati laging miniskirt, cleavage, backless. And she can get away with things, kahit pa walang laman ang utak.  Would you want that, people staring at your chest while you are making your presentation?  No one listens to what you've got to say?  Parang hindi naman ka-respe-repeto di ba?

intelligence.

no matter how clicheic my reason is for choosing such - it can never be taken away from you

Agree sis, beauty can be bought.  Intelligence, cannot.

If intelligence was so major major important, why are looks more glorified and worshiped in society and media?

Looks are more glorified because it is easier to be beautiful than intelligent.  It is doable.  Anyone can be upgraded in terms of looks.  Ever heard of makeover?

Matagal tumalino, it takes years to study.  And it cannot easily be taken away from you (pag beauty, isang suntok lang sa face or maging victim ng acid thing, patay na).

Kaya for me, I'd rather be super intelligent, kasi mas mahirap iyan ma-achieve.

...but it's human nature to gravitate to that which is pleasing to the eyes,  intelligence comes after.

Case in point, sa recruitment mas masarap interviewhin ang maganda kesa sa "aesthetically challenge", and faced with two people who are both qualified for the job we tend to choose the "pleasing personality" over the "ordinary mortal".  Unless si ordinary mortal ay summa cum laude, presidential awardee, or a Fulbright scholar.  But all things being equal aba, dun ka sa maganda.

For a super intelligent being, if he/she is really intelligent enough, one will not appear in the interviews looking ordinary.  He/she will make sure that he is dressed accordingly.  That's smart.

Kung sinasabi mong matalino at hindi nagbihis, I would not consider that person matalino as he just went to the interview unprepared.

IMHO, somewhat he's right but we're not always like that.
girls do you believe in that? that most guys don't want girls that are intelligent though pretty just because of that issue?

di naman most guys, unless you are saying that most guys are shallow as well.  pero in general, yung mga hindi capable na guys would want their partners to be less capable than them para feeling matalino/maabilidad sila kahit hindi.

Exceptional kindness and intelligence are two things I admire the most in people, so I'm going with brainpower here. Not that I don't sometimes fantasize about waking up one day looking like a model...it's just that I think I can live with not being all lovely and gorgeous, but it would be a real source of insecurity and stress for me kung medyo mahina utak ko. LOL, feeling ko lang.

hahaha sis!  totoo iyan. napaka stressful nga nyan!

but you see, if a person is medyo bobo but super pretty, he/she would not have an incling on what he/she doesn't know, and would never care less to know what they don't know.  Kaya mas masaya daw ang maging maganda, kasi what you don't know won't hurt you. Pero in the long run, I still believe it will catch up on you kung walang utak.

anyway una kasi talagang nakikita yung physical eh. i'm kinda an ugly duckling-white swan thing and mas masaya ako ngayon, mas gusto ko siya...  ;) (or malandi lang talaga ako!) :))

and i know it's kinda offensive but is the intelligent thing just a defense mechanism of fugly girls?  ::)

@ sis iwannabeasupermodel, hindi naman siguro..hindi naman siguro pinipili ang intelligence coz bitter dahil hindi kagandahan.. may kanya-kanya lang talagang point of view and reason ang bawat isa. May mga tao naman kasi na kahit matalino eh mas pipiliin yung beauty kasi gusto nya maging maganda and vice versa may maganda that would choose intelligence kasi gusto nya yung maging matalino.

Each other's opinions / point of ciews should not be taken as defense mechanism. :D

^maybe sis. :) that's just my opinion, i mean i feel more confident now than i was before. i guess if you want to be married with the hot dude you'd prefer the beauty then if there'll be a point in your life when you'd want to excel in your career, then you'd go for intelligent. :)
