Dear Mom and Dad,

I know it’s breaking your heart to see me as I am now. Most of the kids we know are starting to talk while I’m just making sounds. I’m lashing out because I’m struggling. I can’t communicate my needs, and things are just not going the way I wish they would. I scream and fight with you every time you try and bathe me because I can’t stand the feeling of water. I cringe anytime I hear thunder, and I don’t like to be touched because of my sensory issues. Even now, as we make all the adorable videos of me dressed up as one of the best looking toddlers of all time, I know things aren’t easy, and we don’t know what my future has in store.

I want to tell you, though, to keep fighting for me and believing in me because without you both — my best advocates — I’m not going to be the person I am today. There’s hope, and you both play a huge part in that. Things are going to get better, and without you that wouldn’t be possible.

At age two and a half, I’m going to say my first words, and at four you’re going to find out from a doctor that I have something called autism. In 1992, it will be something you would have only heard from some of the leading experts in the field and from the 1988 movie “Rain Man.” The road now is going to be difficult, but we’re going to get through it together.

Supports are going to be difficult to come by. The numbers of autism are 1 in 1,000 right now and so many people still don’t understand. Life is going to be difficult. Challenges are coming. But here’s why you should fight through the challenges…

By fighting for me every day and helping me go through occupational, physical and speech therapy for the next 16 years, while giving me support at home and in school, I’m going to grow into an adult who is a national motivational speaker and gives talks about autism across the country.

Because if you fight for me right now and never give up, not only will I be that speaker, but I’ll have the opportunity to write an Amazon Best Seller, consult for a major motion picture that makes 30 million dollars, and be someone who gives you love every single day. I will grow into an adult who embraces affection.

I hope for any parent who reads this letter — coming from a now 27-year-old adult on the autism spectrum — that you never give up on your loved ones. The autism spectrum is wide and everyone’s journey is going to be slightly different. Become an advocate because by doing what you’re doing now, you not only give hope to your loved ones but you give hope to the autism community. We’re learning more and more about autism every day and more and more answers are coming to help our community progress.

Most importantly, I hope you take this letter as a sign that all parents of children on the autism spectrum can make a difference. Some days are going to be more difficult than others, but just know that you’re never alone in this community. Hieveryone,this is Daddy JM posting for my wife. We have a 4yrs. old daughter with ASD and we are both trying our very best in this overwhelming and super stressful situation that we are in. In my on going research I came across this DAN protocol or Biomedical approach to ASD which looks very promising. The question is why is it not being talked about that much and where can we get more info if we would like to try it? TIA

@Bhea: siguro limited numbers lang din yung mga DAN doctors dito sa Pinas. When I came across about DAN, I researched then nakita ko na you can start it on your own by researching what foods ang dapat e avoid ng kid.

In my own understanding GFCF diet siya. I didn't get a DAN doctor for my daughter but I tried avoiding those foods listed and it didn't work well sa kanya. Di ko sinabi sa OT ng anak ko pero yung feedback sa kanya is nawawala siya sa focus at matamlay. Not sure if coincidence lang yun. But every kid is different. Might as well try it!

Anyone who can recommend an aba therapist around QC? My son is actually doing aba for the past 2 weeks since we got his diagnosis and his seating span has greatly improved also his speech.Kaso gusto ko mag try ng ibang ABA therapist kasi compared to the ones i see in youtube, ng hahanap ako ng mas magaling than my current one. I prefer at home ABA sana. Hay minsan naisip ko to move to the states for therapy kaso ang hirap pag walang helpers and yaya huhuhu. Of course given na mas magaling sila sa states kasi licensed sila and have more experience eh dito atrained lang sila and doesnt have that much experience since bago bago lang aba.

On top of my son's 4x a week (2 hours a day) aba, he does 2x a week ot and once speech and i plan to add kindermusik  every weekend for his socialization.

It still pains me a lot. To this day, almost a month na from his diagnosis i still find myself crying for a few minutes. But even at the peak of my 'mourning' I was calling therapists here and there and when i finally was able to set up his therapy schedules, i cried a lot, to this day i still do. Parang gusto ko na din pa check sa pychologist for this.

Hi ladies, just wanted to share this. The SonRise Program has helped our friend whose son has autism. He's grown by leaps and bounds and he's definitely more social now. My friend and her husband went to Singapore to learn more about this program and now they're trying to bring it here in the Philippines. I'm not connected with this program in any way. Just thought it's something you might want to check out.

How do you prevent you kids from tip toe walking?

My almost 26 month old regressed and started toe walking. I hope some OTs here could give me some ideas on how to go about this.

Im happy with his progress since he started therapy. 1 month na and he is now speaking 2-3 or even 4 word phrases. Before it was consistently 1 word, he can do 2 words naman but with prompting or immitation. He labels items, people etc on his own now. Started (again) saying hi to other kids. Eye contact improved. Iba pala talaga ang early intervention. How i wish i had known earlier. Yung toe walking nalang ang problem namin for now.

Hi sisters!

I just want to ask if anyone of you tried the Reliv Now for Kids milk? I saw a lot of testimonies in FB that this milk helps improve kids' health physically and mentally. The seller of this milk claims that this is BFAD registered and actually works. I want to try this but I just want to get feedback from this group. I plan on consulting my son's Pedia if this is safe to drink.

I can't do gluten free diet for my son kasi naaawa ako - wala na siyang kinakain na iba kasi dahil siguro na rin sa sensory issues niya (as per dev ped)

What I'm trying now is Fish oil (bought from healthy options) - researched ko na may studies na nagshoshow na nakaka help makafocus ng bata 'to & Erceflora na probiotics.

Worth a try kasi di naman siya dangerous. Hope there are mommies or daddies from pque or the south. sana makapag meet kasi one of the problems daw ng may disabilities would be socialization. would be best if we could get to know each other para may makilala din kids natin

Fish oil in gel capsules?  My son is only 2 so i make him drink Children's DHA by Nordic Naturals, syrup siya. I dont think he can take capsules yet. Yung healthy options dha ba no fish smell naman? Ang bahhoo kasi ng Nordic naturals syrup.

napapagod na ko sa anak ko. sobrang hyper ng anak ko, kapag pinagsasabihan ko naman hindi ko alam kung naiintindihan ba niya. mag 4 palang anak ko pero madalas gusto ko na sumuko. pinag potty train ko minsan nagsasabi kapag iihi pero kapag poo poo sa brief pa rin nag poo poo. ayoko naman ipag-diaper ulit kasi baka lalo mag regress. wala naman na ko ibang mapagsabihan tungkol sa anak ko. na-dedepress na ko. nawawalan na rin ako ng gana. ano kaya ginagawa ng ibang parents to cope?

Sis ako din hirap na hirap ako i potty train yung anak ko... 5 na sya nung napotty train ko (although may times pa din na nag wiwi or poopoo sya sa diaper)

Ang nag work sakin is paulit ulit - as in ulit ulit ulit ulit plus books & you tube videos ng potty training (may sesame street na bet na bet ng anak ko) tapos habang nag totoilet train kinakanta namin yun...

Super tiyagaan lang talaga i know mahirap madami na din akong times na nag brebreakdown pero we can't breakdown kasi they only have us na pinaka makakaintindi sa kanila.

Try mo din yung fish oil sa healthy options - ang binili ko yung capsules na priniprick - hinahalo ko lang sa milk. Kids DHA yung name.... saka erceflora (available to sa mga drugstore) hinahalo ko sa water niya.

Project, ahhh piniprick pala. Does it have a weird taste or hindi napapansin pag hinalo sa milk? Yung Nordic naturals Children's DHA ng son ko kasi kahit nakahalo sa milk ang panget parin ng smell. So dropper via mouth nalang like his other vitamins, sanay narin siya sa bad taste and smell.

For those who have older kids na, at what age did you tell them about their condition? Kaya kayang hindi sabihin? No one knows about my son's diagnosis expect for his doctors, therapist and immediate family and i have no plans of letting anyone else know. As of now hindi pa naman halata and his speech is continually improving. His cognitive i wish will always remain at par or even a bit higher than his age.

thanks sis Project60    nakabili yata ako ng same sa healthy options binigay ko sa anak ko hindi nagustuhan. tinikman ko pangit nga ng lasa    hindi ko naisip ihalo sa milk. try ko nga. may nakita rin nga akong dha parang gummy bears naman mas mahal lang. pagiging hyper pinaka problema namin ngayon and potty train. sabi samin ng dev pedia pwede na raw ipasok sa regular school kaso hindi pa nga potty train.

Sis puzzlemom, kami naman alam na ng lahat ng relatives namin both sides na may autism anak ko para lang hindi sila mabigla if ever mag tantrum or makita nilang may pagka-weird siya.

Gil12 hindi ba ma address ng OT yung pagiging hyper ng son mo? Have you tried ABA? Yung son ko dati di mo talaga mapapaupo yan unless sa high chair niya at naka strap at may youtube. Also he doesnt walk, he runs all the time.  Ngayon mas okay ang sitting tolerance niya, kahit sa church umuupo na siya mag isa. Sa potty ng sstart narin siya to sit on his own though i havent started potty training talaga. We only started therapy a little over a month ago.

Hi mommies, potty training din yung prob ko sa kid ko. ayaw nya maupo dun a binili kong potty. Yung toilet bowl kasi namin subrang laki naman.

puzzlemom,actually nahalata ko nga na hindi nagiimprove anak ko sa pagka-hyper niya. kasalanan din namin, kasi sinabihan na kami ng dev ped, lessen daw tv and gadgets kaso hindi ko rin maalis tab kasi kapag pinapakain siya kung walang tab wala tatakbo at tatakbo lang siya. iisa lang alam kong center may ABA samin pero gusto ko rin try sa kanya. dati nag toe walking din anak ko hanggang sa nawala rin.

lately napansin ko nag improve na anak ko sa pag cr. lagi na siya nagsasabi kapag mag number 2 siya and wiwi. talagang OA na kami sa praises sa kanya kapag nagagawa niya mag number 2 sa toilet parang nagwork naman.

^same problem with tv and gadgets. ano po ba dapat other activities para ma divert yung tv and gadget time niya?
