^^ there is no prenatal test for ASD since hindi pa naman known ang cause ng autism, also usually medically diagnosed siya by the time a child is two years old because of developmental factors that have to be ruled out. Studies for prenatal testing only began late last year. Perhaps your stepson has another genetic condition that coincided with ASD?

In my story naman, I began giving home therapy to my son even before the ASD disgnosis came out. I bought him ABC/Number/Shapes puzzles. I taught him slowly and little that I know, he was a smart lil boy.. he can recognize the letters kahit ilang araw ko palang tinuro.. When my son had his OT assessment, the OT said marami na palang alam son ko na letters/numbers.. set a side time to teach your child each day.. kahit konting oras lang nagigigng malaki ang difference sa learning nila. But I will continue OT session pa rin kasi this has made a big impact oh his behaviour. He will have ST din soon.

Hello, everyone! This is my first time to ever join a thread because I'm too shy. Pero a part of me felt that I needed to share my experiences especially most of you have younger kids. I'm also a mom to a 10 year old boy diagnosed with ASD.

With my son, he was diagnosed at a very late age. He was already 8 years old when he was diagnosed. Of course, every parent goes through the denial stage. Imagine it took me so many years under denial before I had him diagnosed. My son's primary problem is his speech delay. Friends and relatives used to say that it's normal for young boys to be delayed in speech. So hindi ako masyado nag worry when he was still younger. Besides, he was doing so well in a mainstream school, was always included in the honor's list.

He started school when he was 4. Pero that time, ayaw niya talaga pumasok. I was forced to stay inside the classroom for 2 whole months kasi he would cry non-stop whenever I'd leave. So I thought he was not yet emotionally ready that time that's why I pulled him out. When he turned 5, he entered preschool again. And he started doing very well. Nag excel talaga siya.

But when he entered the 1st grade, parang bigla nalang siya nahuli. Medyo nahirapan na siya with the lessons and he wasn't able to communicate well. So that's the time I decided to have him diagnosed. His first diagnosis was Asperger Syndrome. Hindi ko alam why yan yung diagnosis since the main problem is speech delay. Aspies are great in language, they're even called "little professors" because they talk too much. Pero my son is the opposite. Very minimal yung vocabulary niya and limited yung comprehension. Sometimes he cannot understand simple instructions. Pero still, he went to an ST and OT, once a week.

After a year, I had him re-diagnosed with a different Devped. This time, ASD na ang diagnosis. Same treatment parin but different approach. And I'm very happy to say that he has greatly imrpoved. Although hindi parin siya yung normal 10 year old, pero he's been showing a lot of progress.

Mahirap talaga at first to accept this. Siyempre every parent wants the best for his/her child. So I was really devastated. He's my only child and I don't know if I can have another one in the future. But his condition made me love him even more. Iniisip ko nalang maybe God made him that way because He wants to shield him from all the complexities of this world. Children with ASD are oblivious so they don't get affected too much. Diba ang main goal naman natin to our kids is for them to be always happy? When my son is happy, I'm the happiest.

I hope everything will be well with your kids, too. Let's keep on giving them unconditional love because it's very important for them.  :)

Hi Sis! My son is not just a picky eater but does not eat solids at all. He doesn't like it and he cries whenever we try to feed him.  I read in articles that one of the causes of feeding disorders is autism. OT also helps with feeding disorders.

Hi sis cutemama,

Nope hindi lang speech.

3 Areas na tinitignan to be considered under ASD:
1. Speech/Language (delayed, non verbal)
2. Social Skills (impaired)
3. Repetitive movements (flapping, tip toe walking, lining of toys, stacking, stimming, etc)

During devped assessment, my son was VERY uncooperative, HIGH ang anxiety level niya. He saw him flapping too.

my son regressed when he was around 18mos old. Before that he knows all his body parts. When I ask him, point your ears, eyes, nose, tummy, etc.. he will point it. But one time I noticed he was acting differently.. he spins wheels, he would lie flat on the floor and stare at his toy car as if he is in his own little world. If you call him, he will not respond. When I tried to ask him to point his body parts, no reaction..  :'(

One thing that made me feel he is just fine, eye contact, he has a very good eye contact. But I read din iba iba talaga pag nasa spectrum. Meron may eye contact, meron wala.

I also noticed he does not like crowded places, he will throw tantrums. Also, he grabs my hand if he needs anything. Like I'm his tool.

I have a 7 year old normie daughter and I recall she was never like that so gut feel din na may hindi tama. Then I saw an IG friend posted WARNING SIGNS OF AUTISM pics and there... I know he has autism. He is doing fine naman now.undergoing OT and I am happy connected agad sila ng Therapist niya. 2nd day ng OT. no meltdowns na.

I accepted the diagnosis already and I can say he is a happy child most of the time. I try to expose him to people and new surroundings para masanay. He is acting differently now. Lesser meltdowns. He responds to his name. He loves cuddles and when he is happy.. he will verbally say.."happy"  ;D

^irismae - ang son ko naman eats solids. kaso rice, pasta, pancit, cookies, chips, lumpia. yan lang kinakain niya. pag may meat yung spag, he will remove it. I tried to change his milk to Almond Milk kaso epic fail.. I want to try GFCF kasi.

^hopefulmommy

Thanks for sharing.. We need more stories like yours. Kisses to your son.

By the way mommas with ASD kids, talaga bang hindi na sinasabi ng devped if MILD/MODERATE/SEVERE ang autism? Kasi I asked my devped, she said they do not do that anymore since parents if you say MILD lang, they will not push thru with therapies ???

^ganun ba sis??
Everytime may gagawin siya I always thought NAKU IT'S A SIGN... kaya parang namimissed ko tuloy development niya..
When to worry???..pano ba talaga hand flapping? Naghhand flap kasi siya minsan esp. Pag happy siya..

Yung hand flapping ng anak ko parang bye bye sign pero up and down instead of left and right saka mabilis, ginagawa nya ito pag happy, excited, nagulat sya.

I have a friend cleared sa ASD anak niya pero still flaps until now. 7 year old na kid.
I asked her what did the devped tell you about his flapping.. she said, I didn't bother to ask.. tanggap ko na ganito anak ko.

How is he pala with other kids?

1 hour inabot yung conference. The OT discussed what will be the plan for the next 6 months. :) pag okay na attention niya, we will start ST.

Visual learners daw kasi most kids under the spectrum :) the OT also suggested to name everything sa house. Para pag inutusan mo alam niya kukunin or gagawin. Need din i-demo muna if di maintindihan ang pinapagawa mo. :)
