you should ask the following questions:

who will use the car
how often
gas or diesel
manual or automatic
how much can you afford to pay

di lang sa downpayment natatapos yung obligasyon sa pagbili ng car. andyan ang insurance, registration at ang monthly payments mo.
andyan din ang maintenance.

@Frozen Toes - i agree with sis BETTY. I'm asking my hubby to also get an Everest he like it very much but on 2nd thought he is not willing to spend much for the maintenance, Casa maintain and also the parts are expensive walang generic coz US car. For my 1st car, I'm settled for Hyundai Accent.

Betty's right. The responsibility only starts once you pay your dp or even if you choose to pay it in full, there's the matter of insurance, registrations, maintenance, and most of all GAS.

I suggest that you consider the usage of the vehicle -- daily ba yan to work or pag weekends lang. Pag daily sa work, gano ba kalayo from your house etc. Cus you may not think of it now but gas prices can really hurt your budget if it's not factored in.

With all these, it's also very important to determine how much you can afford in monthly payments. Kase that's gonna be on top of y our basic expenditures plus the new expenses for the car itself.

this is my dilemma too. i wanna buy a car but having seconds thoughts too coz of the maintenance and all. just want to ask how much SHOULD be the monthly budget for the car?

anyway, hope you could also help me...
-i'll be the one to use the car
-will be using it SOMETIMES when going to the office (e.g. when i have lots of stuff to carry), going to the malls on weekends, etc.
-office is in makati and im living in laguna
-i prefer automatic
-not sure whats the diff if i choose gas or diesel. sorry. enlighten me sis @.@
-i could spend 15-17K for the monthly + gas + etc.  would that be enough?
-gusto ko sana yung mas tipid sa gas.

im actually looking at ford fiesta hatchback. my first choice was mazda 3 hatchback but mas expensive siya e. or are there other car brand/model na ma-suggest niyo based on my needs?

15 - 17k a month? parang namamahalan n tuloy ako sa maintenance, for a week ko na byahe manila to paranaque, may side trips sa makati, qc, etc. nakaka 700 a week ata ako sa gas, then parking pa, pagpalagay ko na nasa 250 a week, so total ng 1000 a week.

I am also planning on getting Honda City 2011 1.5 AT.  Although if within Makati ang assignment ko, plan ko lang to bring it
on Monday AND Friday lang for gimik kasi masyado mahal ang parking sa Makati CBD.  Also, i'm from Sucat, mga magkano ang nagagastos nyo sa gas (i'm not
sure if HOnda City is Diesel or Unleaded).  Kasi if I'm to add parking fee, gas and toll baka umabot ako ng 10k a month.  Any inputs would be very helpful.

hinde sis, namamahalan ako sa budget mo, hehe. parang malaki na [textspeak!] 15k mo para sakin ( wala na matitira sa sweldo ko),  minsan papagas ako 3days ubos na 1k ko, nanghihinayang nako, kaya super tipid, planado [textspeak!] lahat ng lakad ko,as in per oras planado! hahaha! ngayon ko lang narealize mahal nga pala!!

^ah i see. nagdadalawang isip pa kasi talaga ko. baka kasi once na nabili ko na, magulat ako with how much makakin nun sa monthly budget ko.
hirap kasi, baka may pambayad nga ko ng downpayment and monthly amortization tapos wala na ko  pang-gas naman. useless diba. hahaha. lol.

ycka, yung budget na 15k kung kasama ang monthly mo dyan, sa tingin mo muna how much monthly car payments can you afford?
sa mahal ng toll fees sa SLEX im sure kulang yang 15k mo kung kasama pa gas. if I remember it right my friend who lives in san pablo said that
expenses alone cost them 10k a month excluding the monthly payment.

Hi sis betty! I think too far na yung san pablo. Im living in san pedro, super near lang sa muntinlupa. agree!! Super taas ng toll sa slex. Sigh.

Anyhow, regarding sa monthly , 12-13k siguro for the car payment alone. So mga 3-5k nalang for the gas and all. I wont be using it everyday pala, so mga 2-3 days a week ko lang siya mgagamit...

manual daw para mas tipid sa gas, sabi ng dad ko, pag daw gamit namen yung manual car tapos 1 or 2 gear lang, mataas pa din nagagamit namen gas, nung tinuturuan pa nya brothers ko magdrive mga 4 hours na ikot ng ikot sa 2nd gear or 3rd gear lang, nakakaconsume daw 500 pesos na gas din daw, so imagine ko daw na yung automatic eh naka 1st or 2nd gear lang kasi parang bump car lang, so malakas din daw sa gas. i cant explain it well kasi di ako technical na tao, pero nagets ko explanation ng dad ko.

Yes.  Pero based doon sa nabasa ko sa Tsikot.com, they can reduce Fuel consumption to 15 KM / L using honda city.
Yun lang, hindi mag change ng lanes and other methods on how to reduce FC.

Hi ycka29, try looking at a Kia Picanto. This is my car right now. Super tipid sa gas and very efficient naman. Ive had it for 4 year na rin and I never had problems with it. Its also very cheap.

We got a Toyota Vios A/T na 1.3E. Nag downpayment kami ng 40% and monthly namin sa remaining payment is 13,500 including Comprehensive Insurance (via BPI)
I drive from Makati/Taguig to Alabang and back and ang daily gastos is as follows:
1. Tollgate @ Php110 one way x 2 = Php 210
2. Gas is 200php approx per day (40+/- KM)
3. Parking is 60Php 2 Festival Mall for 13hrs parking (15hrs 1st 4hrs + 5php per hour --> sa Makati mas mahal. 35php 1st 3hrs ata + 10php per hour? please correct if wrong)
So per week is approx 2,350 x 4weeks = 9,400php

so if i add monthly ko 13,500 + 9,400 = 22,900PhP
hindi pa kasama ang mga gimik at lakad pag weekends.

mahal talaga ang magkaroon ng car para ka na talaga nagrent ng 1 unit ng house kaya kahit gustong gusto ko magkaroon ng car pinipigil ko ang sarili ko kasi para sa akin hindi naman siya talaga need now although masarap umalis kapag may car and kahit saan mo gusto pumunta pwede
