best credit card to use when traveling abroad

in terms of extra charges and currency conversion, which credit card kaya ang pinaka ok gamitin when traveling? thanks.

I think any card with Mastercard or Visa would be good.  It depends on the company that gives the credit card rules, try HSBC or Citibank.  Dont use America Express, for some reason when I used it ang taas ng rate.

^Not only that most merchants in Europe don't recognise Amex nor accept it. Visa or Carte Bleu and Mastercard pa rin ang widely accepted.

It will be my first time to go abroad (Macau-HK) and I applied for a credit card a month ago pero wala parin dumarating. Will I get by without one? Will be staying for 6 days. Medyo kinakabahan din ako eh. Thanks!

^^ and if your card arrives, check mo kung pwede mo gamitin internationally. Other cards kasi are classic lang and can only be used locally.

when i was in hk last year, i used my bpi gold. ok naman ang rate. usually sinasabi din naman ng cashier kung ano yung rate and papipiliin ka if you will charge it in peso na agad or kung yung currency dun.

Visa and MasterCard pa din. Amex has long lost favor among merchants. but it's handy to have one. Some establishments naman only accept Mastercard. If you have the three, then its more than enough.

and by the way, if you're not a frequent traveler, and your bank does not know that you'll be leaving, let your bank know that you are leaving or inquire muna if there is anything that you should do. i've known some people na who left the country without doing anything and then their cards get blocked as per bank's security measure. they end up spending time on the phone clearing things up.

hsbc and bpi gamit lagi ni hubby, ok naman ang conversion rate...tumatawag din siya before umalis para maincrease yung limit niya. tatanung lang naman kung gaano ka katagal tapos pagbalik mu, balik na ulit sa dati yung credit limit mo.

gusto ko rin malaman ito, may nagsabi befor BPI daw, kase nga mababa lang conversion to Peso...kahit daw pag book sa airlines na on-line, okay daw BPI

^I used my BPI gold card in HK and no problems so far. Mababa pa yung conversion rate. I used it last month sa h&m and uniqlo, you have the option na in peso or hkd yung charge.

they say it's bpi while citibank charges higher conversion rates.

for some merchants, when you use a visa card, you can charge your purchase with the local currency based on the day's exchange rate. bale, peso na directly mag reflect sa account mo. i've tried this and it works

i travel on average 3x a year but i never called my cc company to tell them i'll be abroad. thank god i didn't get any mix up. a tourmate of mine bought a rolex watch just last week and the cc company had to call her pa to verify that she is abroad and indeed trying to swipe that much. better be safe than sorry

I use both my Citibank and BPI credit cards in all my travels. I work in the airline industry so I travel a lot both business and personal. I don't find that much difference in their conversion rates. Pareho lang actually. But I use my Citibank more often because of its tie-up with AsiaMiles.

kakabasa ko lang kasi kahapon ng standard charted flyer. may extra charge pala!

^sis, my Citibank and BPI walang extra charges basta wag lang na cash advance ha. Cash advance kasi meron talaga yang charges. But if straight credit charge no extra fees, sa currency conversion na lang magkakatalo.

So far, 2 cc pa lang ang nagamit ko abroad - BDO and Citibank. Mas ok ang BDO in terms of conversion, mataas masyado sa citibank...

question lang, kung supplimentary ko ang gagamit ng credit card abroad, magkakaproblema kaya? iniisip ko kase baka ma-decline lang lahat ng purchases kung di principal cardholder ang gagamit eh.

^No problem as long as within the assigned credit limit sya. I got my sister who lives in the US a supplementary card so everytime may bilin ako sa kanya she'll just use the card and ako magbabayad dito.

ohhh.. naku nakailan extra charge pala ang Standard Chartered saken. sayang! i'll check with HSBC.. kasi pina cut ko na Citibank ko eh
