Mandarin Language

Is there anyone here who knows/is studying/wants to learn Mandarin?

I just know the basics and I'm not even sure yet if I construct my sentences correctly. But I really really want to learn more (sayang naman kasi) and I'm hoping to get more ideas/information on how to...

One more thing, how do you practice? Since I don't get to talk to mandarin-speaking people, mahirap talaga magpractice.

Hi sis.

I know a little Mandarin kasi half-Chinese ako and simula nag-aral ako hanggang 4th year HS, Chinese school ako. Sadly, wala na ko maalala except for the basic words and I can read naman kasi wala din akong kausap na tao dito haha Fukien kasi ang alam ng dad ko so ayun, nawala na mga inaral ko but I plan on studying ulit.

Yung sentence construction madali lang kasi para din siyang language natin unlike sa Japanese na pabaliktad lahat.

sis realmofadreamer, one way to practice is to teach other people. like your family, friends or officemates. you talk to them in mandarin and translate to them what you said. another way naman, like for words lang, when you look at everyday objects, like for example, a clock, or a bed or the tv, tell yourself out loud kung [textspeak!] yun sa mandarin. hth!

I think that you should constantly use the language to be able to practice it.  I know a bit of Mandarin because I studied it, pero parang nalusaw na din yung knowledge ko of the language dahil hindi ko siya nagagamit.

@sis materialistic, hay naku sis. tinatawanan lang nila ako kapag kinakausap ko sila in mandarin.

@sis numonorean, yung nga sis... sayang din kasi yung time and money kung mawawala din :-S

ang sabi ko sa sarili ko at least one language a year yung pagaaralan ko (feelingera kasi ako! waaah) pero mahirap pala lalo na kung wala kang nakakausap

^I agree. Mahirap ng walang kausap lol Nawala na nga inaral ko ng ilang taon din yun dahil majority ng family namin eh fukien magsalita haha

naghahanap nga ako ng language exchange partner LOL kaso yung nakausap ko, arabic lang alam nya... enjoy naman kasi new friends... although merong iba na interested magshare ng mandarin.

sis, i suggest if you can shell out some money, try to enroll sa mga chinese schools. Hmmm, try chiang kai shek college. I do not know how much. Dun kasi ako graduate eh. Haha. Or try Manila Patriotic High School. This summer, they have classes in mandarin for 2.5k everyday, 4 hours until may 22. Not bad. Mura siya sobra. Ako naman I am choosing between advance studies in mandarin or cantonese. I am fluent in Mandarin na but I want to do advance studies or choose to learn another dialect which is Cantonese.  Chinese is quite hard because of the intonations. Magkamali ka lang, you can call your mother a horse. SO dun ang part na mahirap. But this is an investment as Mandarin Chinese is predicted as the next international business language at mukhang mangyayari nga in the way they dominate economies all over the world.  Hope this helps.

2500 a day sis? ang mahal para sa akin especially may paglalaanan money ko. pagtitiyagaan ko na muna ang Rosetta Stone tsaka mga tulong ng mga LE partners ko tsaka I'm not from Manila.
I actually found a workbook ng most commonly used chinese characters na gagayahin mo para matuto ka magsulat. hopefully, makaabot ako dun haha. sabi ng mga LE partners ko, kailangan ko daw muna matuto ng pinyin tsaka matuto paano sabihin. buti na lang naimbento ang voice chat

^hahaha. mali mali. Sorry. 2.5k for 12 sessions, everyday ang pasok. Hahaha. Yes, you really have to master pinyin first and the correct pronunciation before everything else plus the four tones. Da jìa hǎo! Wǒ jiào Lin. I am studying Mandarin right now in Confucius Institute (Xiànzài, Wǒ zài kǒngzi xuéyuàn de xuésheng. Wǒ xuéxi  Hànyǔ.). I find it very interesting and I am also practicing my Mandarin. Happy to know this forum. If interested you can browse website of Confucius Institute at the Ataneo de Manila. For basic 1 you will learn proper pronunciation which is really important.
If anyone here would like to converse in Mandarin (pinyin mode) I am also willing, right now I am learning characters na din. You can teach yourself naman to learn characters but as for the language talga lalo for basic mas advisasble na mag join ng class since you will be able to communicate with others and sometimes laoshi will ask the class to form a group for a presentation in front of class.

^Uhmmm... may exposure nga sis pero hindi mo rin maiintindihan haha I studied Chinese almost all my life (starting from nursery until 4th yr HS) pero once na di mo siya magamit, hindi mo talaga maalala. I can read some Chinese characters pero kung manunuod ako with Chinese language and subtitles without any background at all, hindi mo maiintindihan.
