TV Shows for Infants/Toddlers

What age did you let your kiddo watch TV shows for kids? Is it helpful like brain development or social interactions? What are your kiddo's favorite TV show or what good show can you recommend? I let my baby watch pa lang DVD set of Your Baby Can Read. Ok naman and my baby is enjoying it. I was planning to have him watch TV shows for kids pero was thinking what good show and if its helpful. TIA.

My son didn't get to watch TV until after 3 na yata. And even now (he's almost 5), very sporadic ang TV-watching nya. The AAP recommends no screen time until after the age of 2. In France yata, ang guideline is after 4. I think there have been studies that link tv-watching in babies to ADD.

Baby TV din sa umaga, yung Charlie and the Numbers saka birthday song, then Doraemon tapos patay na TV. She plays or reads na. Also playing with your baby is better or si yaya or lolo or lola dahil increased human interaction is what babies need developmentally, I mean yung first two years nila.

It's not advisable daw to have babies watch TV until at least after 2 years old. I dont let my daughter watch TV and strict ang bilin ko sa yaya. I usually read books to her and we talk to her all the time.

There is always that misconception that kids learn a lot from TV watching. But actually, kids will learn one way or another. TV is just a really convenient something because the parents/yayas need not be involved, need not think of what to teach, need not be engaged, need not be exhausted. Because the simple act of reading to a child can be exhausting, what more playing with them.

I let my child watch TV.... we started with Signing Time videos when he was 1 because we were learning sign language along with him. But I will also be the first to admit that I sometimes let him watch TV so he'd be out of my hair... I have no delusions that TV teaches him more than I can or have. So, basically, letting a child watch TV is more for the parents' sake than for the child's because they essentially don't need TV.

We, however, believe we NEED them out of our way.

sis may na google ako before regarding the disadvantage of infant watching tv try mo.
hayley is also 8mos old, si hubby sadya pang pinalitan yung tv namin ng 40" LED HD para daw mag enjoy si hayley manuod ng cartoons haha! hindi pa kami nakakabitan ng cignal satellite cable kaya di pa nakaka start mag watch ng tv, we will allow our baby to watch kapag nandyan lang kami para guided at may interaction pa rin..tingin ko kasi mag bebenefit lang si yaya if we will allow them to use the tv set while we are away, sosyal naman ni yaya kung naka LED siya! >:(

i think sa smart parenting site ko nabasa before that kids below 2 years old should not watch tv. it's unavoidable in our house though for a few months, our baby wasn't allowed to watch. my lola would bring her to the bedroom when people were watching in the living room. i read books to her everyday instead. before she turned a year old, we let her watch disney playhouse. at night, she would stay in the living room where everyone watched the local channel. one thing i noticed though is that she only looks at the tv when she hears music. even with cartoons, she doesn't care about the dialogues. she would only look up from her books and toys when she hears the theme songs. i was worried that she'll get addicted to tv viewing but good thing she appreciates books more. she also got bored with your baby can read videos. i couldn't make her watch for more than 5 minutes. the longest time she stays tuned to the screen is 6-10 minutes and that's when she feels sleepy and ready for her nap.

my husband's boss told him that it's not good for kids to watch shows with adult content. at 3 years old, his boss' niece who was exposed to just about anything on tv would say, 'sabi ko na nga ba eh!' when two people would kiss on tv. naexpose kasi nang maaga sa tv plus hindi namonitor ang shows na pinapanood so ganun. a friend naman was shocked when her daughter said, 'goodbye sucker!' to her husband when he left for work. she's trying to find out what nickelodeon show she heard it from because she's always tuned in to that channel. also, when some kids become addicted to tv, they would only stop and focus if it's turned on.

ako i let my daughter watch tv, buti may free channel kasi dito na puro cartoons and kids shows. yung mga shows are sesame street, angelina ballerina, bob the builder... pero beyond this, maingat din ako what I watch sa tv kasi nga ayoko sya makakita sya ng sensitive scenes or makarinig ng language na offensive. SO halimbawa she's playing and Im watching tv and pag may di kid friendly na scene, nililipat ko talaga yung channel

http://www.whitedot.org/issue/iss_story.asp?slug=ADHD%20Toddlers

If I understand the article correctly, it's not even the content that's the issue. It is the general nature of the moving images that may be correlated to ADD/ADHD.
I read an article and I'll try to find this article kasi 5 years ago ko pa yon nabasa about a study (or studies?) that show how TV watching can disrupt the myelination of the developing brain of babies/kids.

yup... it's not just the content eh... it's also being made to sit still (so naiipon yung pent up energies nila kaya mas hyper sila after)...

anyway, just Google "baby development and TV" and you'll already get loads of links... affected ang language development, firstly... as well as attention span

I agree that letting kids watch TV is more for the parents than for the kids. I've seen that first-hand with my 2 nephews and may hinde magandang effects talaga.

Share ko lang my experience with my (almost) 5 year old.
Hindi talaga kami masyado ma-TV to begin with and since he was born, we've really made a conscious effort not to watch TV when he's awake. First, because nga of the preliminary studies made about TV not being that good for kids and second, time not spent watching TV is time spent interacting with him.
So anyway, yun nga, he's never been a regular tv watcher. Minsan we'd go for weeks na hindi sya nakakanood ng TV. However, there was a period where I was busy with a project so he started watching TV a lot. Mind you, the only stuff he watched were Word World and the Leap Frog DVDs. There'd be times when he'd watch TV for up to an hour/ day for 3-4 consecutive days. Napapansin ko that when this happens, he's a grumpier than usual, mas hindi nakikinig and hindi masyado nakakapag-concentrate. Nothing terribly alarming naman but there's definitely a change in behavior. And to think that at an hour/day, that's on the lower side of average viewing time for kids his age.
Imagine na lang if he'd started watching TV at such an early age. I would assume that that sort of behavior is his normal. But since we refrained from TV watching for years, I know what is normal to him and what is the effect of too much TV on him.

I let my child watch Playhouse Disney under the age of 2. Her favorites are Word World and Special Agent Oso. I'm not too strict about not letting her watch TV. Ang approach ko kasi with taking care of my daughter is variety/exposure to a lot of different things. I let her watch TV, play with her iPad, play with her other toys, read, water the plants, bake cookies, go with me to the bank/grocery/post office/library/zoo, etc, etc. TV is interesting, no doubt about it, but I think what's important is when you do let your child watch, it should be a show where she could at least learn something from, and to limit the hours (kahit anong activity masama talaga pag sobra, even reading books all day will make you lethargic). With regard to language/mental development, our pedia says she's advanced for her age, so so far wala namang problema. I'm not pro-TV, nor anti-TV, but I believe that everything that a child is exposed to, may natututunan sya/nakukuhang information, and every activity should be done in moderation.
