i would not allow it. kahit super talino ng anak ko, it doesn't mean na ready na rin sya emotionally to mingle with older kids. i would want her to enjoy school, and for that she has to be around kids na kapareho nya ng wavelength. kahit observe mo lang yung grade 3 at grade 4. magkaiba ang interes nila kahit 1yr lang ang pagitan. pano pa kaya pag 2yrs na gap? she might be bullied kasi pinakamaliit at pinakabata sya, or ma OP kasi iba ang gusto ng older kids. may purpose talaga bakit may age requirement at a certain grade level. hindi yun nilagay kasi "wala lang".

just curious, which schools allow acceleration? in my son's school, they're strict on age requirement kasi.

^la salle Greenhills allows skipping 7th grade. BUT you have to be in their cream section program. If I'm not mistaken you can only join that til grade 5. No new students are admitted by grade 6. Their lessons are more advanced than their batchmates. Very strict ang curriculum and demanding (see my earlier post). I know one who was removed because of tardiness & to think this kid was representing the school and the countrymin math contests. It is really a big accomplishment if you get accelerated after all ng dinaan mo. I remember during my brother's joint graduation with the 7th graders, they received the biggest applause. But it is also so obvious how totoy they look in their barongs as compared to the 7th graders.

kung sa pilipinas lang kami, i would consider and i would be proud but if were moving to Singapore (SG) and my child will continue studying here, ill think twice kasi i'm afraid acceleration doesnt work here in SG

I have a friend who's son was accelerated din sa isang school in the PH, gradeschool pero pagdating nila ng SG, the child was put on his level according to his age but the child proved to be really gifted, he tops his school, may time pa na number 1 sya sa buong primarily level nila pero wala acceleration pa din. maganda lang nung nag high school sya, because he is a smark studnet, their ministry of education put him on the best high school naman.

If it were my kid. Initial decision ko is no.

Unless sobrang taas ng EQ nya or if he's studying in a school na hindi lang academic performance ang tinitingnan.

Lalo na kapag girl. Ibang level ng psychological stress and bullying if you're with older classmates.

I'm for or pro grade skipping or acceleration, but I may just be biased about it since there are a number of people close to me who skipped grades or had been in a special gifted program, and they are among the most artistic, altruistic, funny and broad-minded persons I've ever met. Eccentric yes, but well-adjusted naman ;)

I think the best questions to ask by parents with children who are candidates for grade skipping (especially those who will be 2 to 4 years younger than their classmates) are these:

(1) is my child assessed by a group of professionals, say a child psychologist, development pedia and a teacher with gifted education background, to be mentally equipped to skip grade? If you have this support group to assist you or advocate for your child, you would know if your child NEEDS to skip grade or wait for another school year to initiate the skip. They can help you understand where your child's strengths and weaknesses are, and provide you with the proper education plan for your child. Kung ayaw mong mag skip grade, pwede nilang i-recommend yung mentoring wherein a special teacher will serve as a personal tutor for your child, advancing his academic levels, while your child remains in a regular school setting. Kasi, if your child were indeed a fast-learner, a regular school might do more harm than good. It wouldn't meet the challenges that your child needs and wants. If he were challenged enough, the child would see that studying requires hard work, patience and common sense, not just brains. Kaya nga maraming matalino na underachiever. Yung sinasabing matalino, tamad nga lang. Lagi kong naririnig to. I bet you they will excel in that field.

(2) will my child be in a classroom with supportive and understanding teachers who are willing to work with him/her as a mentor? If the child in spite of skipping grades still jumps ahead with school work, the teachers should support and provide for the growing needs of the precocious child. Children who are candidates for grade skipping are just like children with hearing impairment, ADHD, cerebral palsy, autism -- they are the children with special needs.

(3) will I, as a parent, provide enrichment for my child when he asks for it and won't push my child when he does not perform well in certain areas?   Kaya dapat, parents should also be well-informed about the this "oddity" or the asynchronous development of a gifted child. Kasi nga, minsan nakakalimutan ng parents na bata lang ang kaharap nila dahil nga sa katalinuhan and they sometimes expect too much from the kid. Kahit matalino yan, may areas na nahuhuli pa rin, and parents shouldn't expect the child to perform spectacularly in all areas and be MATURED at their tender age.

This is true; not always true, but in most cases, it's true. There are those who act older than their age, meron namang below their chronological age, meron naman act older most of the time, but behave below their age in some circumstances.

I'm sure EQ outside of home wouldn't be a problem if we provide the right environment for our children to develop a well-adjusted EQ.

This is so true, especially #1 and your ability as a parent to be there.

Honestly, I think if wala kang time for your kid, it may not be best to skip grades, especially if you don't have any idea how his/her teachers are going to handle it.

My daughter was accelerated in Elementary. Syempre has gusto naming, kasi tipid ng year at may yabang pag nakita sa records. But now I regret it. She is doing well naman kaya lang emotionally parang pilit. When she was assessed by the psychologist, mataas naman daw ang EQ, but through out the year, parang di siya comfortable.  :(

He's in grade 2 now, yung first honor nilang classmate pwedeng ma-accelerate sa higher grade, kasi magaling naman talaga yung bata at his age, gusto nga ng mom nya sana ma accelerate, kaso wala namang acceleration sa school nila ngayon.

my brother was accelerated. He seems adjusted naman. He has friends who are older than him so I guess that shows that he never had a hard time running with people who are older than him. I guess it depends. Nung time na yun, he was not assessed if he would be able to cope with the change psychologically. We're lucky because he kept up, did well and is now one of the most creative people i know. I'm not biased because he's my brother ha. I just think that he's an overall great person.

this article can be related, Prodigy earns University of Chicago medical degree at 21 eto yata talaga deserve na deserve iaccelerate kasi baka turuan nya pa mga teachers nya pag di sya nag move up. hahaha.

pero he encountered issues along the way,

At age 12, he enrolled in the University of Chicago's  prestigious Pritzker School of Medicine, where students earn both a Ph.D. and a medical degree, according to the Tribune.

"I came to college to study, not to hang out or date," he said in 2000 when he entered Loyola, WLS-TV in Chicago reported. Yano told the television station that he did face some discrimination for being a very young university student.

"I ran into things like people shouting 'go back to elementary school' on campus," Yano told WLS-TV.

The Tribune story also pointed out that several medical schools passed on him because of maturity questions. On campus, he was a target for wisecracks, the Tribune reported, with some classmates questioning whether his mother was pushing him into college too early.

kung 1 year lang, oo ang sagot ko dyan.  kasi if grabe yung age gap, mabu-bully sya for sure.

sakin namin kahit malaki yung magiging age gap, i'd still go for acceleration kung talagang kailangan. that way, the child can explore his fullest potential. when einstein was sstill a child, he was bored to death at his classes kasi alam na niya lahat ng tinuturo sa kanya. sayang naman to waste such a brillant mind for the mere fear of bullying. everone will have their fair share of bullying eventually. hindi iyan maiaalis. that's what parents and teachers are there for

^ If Einstein level ang anak ko, he might not have friends din naman in the first place.
