anong test ba ito sis? i dont remember having tests on a daily basis. depende na din sa prof or subject siguro, baka meron lang nagpapaquiz on a daily basis. we had quarterly exams (aka periodic exams). ang system dun ay usually 2 days for a quarterly exam -- 3 subjects lang naman per day ang exam and usually takes only half a day. the 4th quarter exams equivalent ng finals which covers the entire year's curriculum. then smaller exams -- about two long tests / unit tests per quarter and a bunch of quizzes. kasama din sa grading usually one project per quarter, recitation, attendance syempre, some teachers grade notes, ayun.

i don't know anong system nila ngayon but during my time naabutan ko ang 5x a week sched, then 4x a week sched -- wednesdays off then latest kong alam eh mondays off -- though each class is 1hr30mins.

Thanks mga sis, actually hindi pa naman namin nakakausap anybody from UPIS faculty kasi nung nagpunta kami last friday may linggo ng wika activity kaya di available ang mga teacher kausapin kahit ikutin yung IS dahil sabi ng guard busy lahat dahil sa activity. Ang nakausap ko lang before nun is a yaya na ang alaga niya is a grade school student ng UPIS and yun nga ang info na nabigay niya sakin.

January pa pala open ang UPIS, parang late na pano kung di rin naman kami mapili  sa Miriam CSC October tatanggap na sila ng application nung nagpunta kami. Mag try na din kami dun, although priority namin talaga ay sana coed ang mapasukan ng kid namin.

Mommy @melissa_ruan7, my child is now a 4th grader at UPIS. Siempre for me sasabihin ko maganda ito. Can any school of the same caliber beat its tuition fee? Parang nanalo na kami sa lotto, sa totoo lang. Noong kinder ang anak ko, may dagdag lang kaming bayad on top of the tuition dahil school na ang nagpeprepare ng merienda ng mga kids para masimulan silang matutong kumain ng maayos na food (sine-serve noon e pansit, sopas, sandwich, spaghetti, etc at lagi may kasamang juice).

4days ang school every week. Tinuturuan ang mga bata maging independent. Sa kinder level, each classroom has its own sink and kids are line up after recess to wash their respective plates and utensils by themselves.

Filipino ang medium of instruction kahit sa Math. I would suggest na sanayin nyo po sa Filipino dahil kahit sa UPKAT exams po ay Filipino ang gamit.

Pero kahit Filipino ang nakamulatan nila dito, maririnig mo ang mga bata na maayos magsalita ng Ingles pag English ang subject at kahit sa labas ng classrooms, nagkukuwentuhan sa Ingles.

Maraming assignments yes, pero tingin ko kasi way ng school din yun para i-involve ang parents sa academics naman pagdating sa bahay. Napapagod din ang anak ko pero kailangan mag-institute kami ng rules like no tv during weekdays para magkaroon din ng enough time ang bata sa homework at disiplina na rin. Sa K-2 level naman e maluwag at manageable ang activities at schedule ng bata. Seryoso na pagdating ng grade 3.

Ang anak ko hindi sociable (siguro dahil only child at walang kalarong ibang bata sa bahay) pero natutong makihalubilo sa mga tao. Natuto rin maging analytical sa mga bagay sa paligid nya. At dahil UP culture, ini-encourage sila dito na malayang magexpress ng kanilang saloobin at naiisip kahit gaano pa ito ka-silly sa perspective ng adults. Ang mga teachers nila ay puro nakapagtake ng kani-kanilang master's degree o kaya naman ay phd at karamihan ay professor ang tawag. Dahil lab school ito, ang mga teachers ay may mga student teacher assistants na kasamang nagtuturo sa mga bata.

Regular ang appointment nila sa guidance counselor dahil sinusulong ng school ang pagiwas sa bullying.

Hindi perfect ang UPIS. Public school ito. Pero so far, satisfied ako as a parent at siguro dahil alam ko na once nakapasok sya e diretso na sa grade 10 or in our batch's case, grade 12. May peace of mind ako na hindi maghahanap pa ng ibang school ulit after elementary.

Mommy, pasensya na wala talaga akong idea kung anong klase ng entrance exam dun. Noong time ng anak ko, hanggang labas lang kami ng gate. Ang bata e sinusundo ng mga student assistants (I think students from College of Educ) pagpasok ng gate.

Nireview ko sya bago nag-take ng exam. Mga simpleng kindergarten test sa Filipino lang ang ginamit ko, yung may mga instructions na guguhitan o bibilugan ang tamang sagot para matutong sumunod sa instruction ang bata at maintindihan kung ano ang bilog, guhit at iba pa. Hindi kasi ako sobrang bait na nanay kaya talagang review na regular yun for one month ata hanggang masanay sya. Pati pagsusulat ng pangalan nya at numbers tutok ako sa pagtuturo. I was anticipating kasi na when taking exams, she'll be on her own and I won't be beside her to coach her, di ba. Mabuti nang equipped sya, kahit paano. At sobra-sobrang dasal na after nun.

Paglabas nya ng gate, tanong agad ako kung anong inexam nila. Sagot lang nya, "nakalimutan ko na Mama." Hindi nga raw lumabas yung mga nireview namin. Ang kinuwento lang nya e yung paglalaro nilang mga bata after ng exams.

Nagkaroon sila ng computer classes ngayon lang e. Again, public school po ito. Pero noon pang Kinder hanggang ngayon may mga clubs (Math, Science, etc) na silang sinasalihan, depende sa interests nila. Meron ding theater o choir o writing sa newsletter. Active din sila sa scouting. Maraming sine-celebrate na annual events sa school one of which is the UPIS week kung saan ang dami nilang extra-curricular activities. Kaya nadedevelop talaga ang talent ng bata at makikita mo whether budding performer sya o Mathematician-in-the-making.

Sobra din sila ini-encourage mag-library mula Kinder. Karamihan sa mga bata dito readers talaga. Ngayong 3-6 level may mga required readings sila --- usually mga classic chidlren's literature written by authors such as Roald Dahl, H.G. Wells, E.B. White, Alice Dalgliesh, etc.

Pero kahit pinagexam ko sya dun noon, naka-enrol na sya sa Raya kasi nga late na ang release ng results ng exam sa UPIS. Nakapagbayad na rin kami ng partial fee (non-refundable) noon sa Raya kasi na-accept na sya. Better pa rin kung may fallback kasi grabe stress kung non-UP personnel ka at ito lang ang option mo.

Thanks sis, last na lang, totoo din ba na every monday walang pasok, then test at the end of the school day? So bale 4x ang test nila in a week, monday lang ang pahinga? Di ba mab-burn out ang bata, or parang review test lang kung ano yung topic nila for that day?

Sis Jessica, ngayon walang pasok kada Monday. Mukha namang sa batch ng anak ko wala naman nagkukwento ng burnout kahit among us parents. Enjoy ang mga bata e.

really? wala silang textbooks? eh modules?

Sis cool_chique, wala pong gamit na standard textbooks ang anak ko sa UPIS na katulad ng ginagamit sa public schools pero meron silang modules/workbooks. Noong Grade 2 sila, parang may lumang books na nasa classroom na ginagamit sila pero hindi workbooks at para sa iilang subjects lang yun.

Ngayon kasi pag gumagawa ng homework ang anak ko, nagche-check kami sa internet usually pag sa Science o Social Studies. Dictionary naman ang binubuklat ng anak ko pag English (meaning and/or part of speech labels of words). Allowed and encouraged naman ng school. Para sa akin okay na rin kasi kung masyadong dependent sa textbooks e pwedeng outdated na ang info at hindi okay sa akin yun. Mabilis pa naman ngayon ang developments sa Science and Social Studies (current events, for example) kaya ako naman I'd rather na makakuha ng pinaka-latest na info ang anak ko.

Iba na rin naman ang approach ng teachers ngayon. Sa Science maraming homeroom projects ang bata for example, one time may activity sila na gumawa ng moving vehicle using ordinary materials (carton, bottle caps, sticks) para maintindihan nila ang ibig sabihin ng motion. Gumagamit din ang mga teachers ng videos (using projectors) para mai-explain sa mga bata ang iba't-ibang concepts na mahirap agad ma-absorb kung babasahin lang at sasauluhin ito ng bata.

To mommies whose kids have passed the UPKAT, can you please share any pointers to help other moms like me? My son is going to take the exam on April, I have reviewing him additions and subtractions, but that's it. Don't know what kind of exam they're going to give. Thanks in advance!

^ sis backread ka, i have posted info re: what i remember from taking the exam decades ago. so far wala namang nabago sa kind ng exam na binibigay from my interviews with mommies whose kids took the UPKAT these past few years (i teach din kasi so i get feedback from the parents of my students)

ang madalas makalaglag is social skills. ang bata dapat marunong makihalubilo, hindi pikon kapag natatalo sa games), patient (i remember being given the marshmallow test), marunong sumagot kapag tinanong. not so much with academic skills, ituturo pa lang naman kasi yan in kindergarten. good frustration tolerance at hindi masyadong impulsive in answering (may kids kasi na minamadali ang written test). and socially aware -- that is, dapat alam ng kid kung ano ang papasukin niya -- meaning he has a concept na of what school is, and differences ng girls and boys. hindi iiyak kapag iniwan ni mommy, hindi nang-aaway ng ibang kids. OK with Tagalog since this is the primary language sa UPIS. sa kinder kasi usually cutting and coloring activities, book reading, counting, reciting poems and songs, ganyan so be prepared for that too.

Can anyone share their experience about their child taking the entrance test to UP-IS Grade 7 level? My son just took the exam last Saturday and I'm so anxious just thinking about how he will pass.  They say they're only accepting 10 transferees this year - and last Saturday, there were more than 100 I think who took the test - morning session pa lang! 

Would appreciate if anyone can share their experience... TIA!

My daughter passed! Yay! Di kami nagexpect kasi sabi nasa 4000 daw yung nagexam. Grade 1 na sana sya sa June but since pumasa sa UPIS, balik ulit sya kinder. Pero ok lang, di maipagpapalit ang standards ng education sa UPIS at its low cost.

I dunno what their criteria are. My son said they danced, traced a fish, were a given a bunch of toys to play with..I'm sure most of the kids did well, but how could have they narrowed it down to 100 students from thousands?
