anyone here who have a kid studying or will study sa UP IS?

need your feedbacks and experiences kasi planning to enroll my kid there for Nursery level.

Graduated from UPIS years back and our kid is going to take the exam this year. If your child passes the exam, he/she will start in the kinder level (child should be 5 1/2-6 1/2 years old).

It's really a tough competition though. 100 students lang ang tatanggapin, 60 of which are kids of UP employees while the remaining 40 slots are for non-UP dependents. Ngayon pa lang (2nd day of application forms release), nasa 700 na yata ang bilang. Hanggang Feb 4 ang last day ng pagkuha ng app form.

UPIS is UP College of Education's lab school. They don't have textbooks (common complaint noon ng mga parents namin) but they have modules. Hindi rin spoon feeding dito kaya kailangan din siguro established na sa bata ang study habits. Filipino is also the medium of instruction (hanggang grade 3 yata) then bilingual after (if I'm not mistaken).

I am also looking for a pre-school for my son here in QC.  May iba pang preshool-sa UP.  UP-Child Development Center (CDC), UP PAUW Child Care Center at UP Kalinga Day Care Center.

The best among the three for me is yung CDC, kasi progressive learning sya.  Kaso lang pahirapan ang pagkuha ng slot.  Draw lots for non-UP dependents.  Swertehan lang din.  We tried last year kaso di nakuha son ko.

Nakakalula na kasi tuition fees na nababasa ko dito.  Baka by the time na magcollege ang anak ko, wala na akong pampaaral.

^^hi sis gulaysk. What are your other options for big school for your son aside from UPIS? My son is also taking the entrance exam for prep and considering the slim chance of getting to UPIS I'm kinda confused what other schools to consider. Sorry if this is OT.

^he currently goes to Raya School and we decided that if he didn't make it to UPIS, he'll continue studying at Raya. We've already reserved him a slot for next school year. Para kasing suntok sa buwan ang makapasok sa UPIS ngayon kaya nanigurado na kami na may mapasukan pa rin siyang iba.

You can try looking into Raya (if you're into the progressive method). They're adding a grade level each year. This coming SY, hanggang Gr. 5 na yata sila.

OT: I've also heard good reviews about The Learning Tree in Sikatuna Village. Yun nga lang, tuition is about 70-80k. We also considered putting him in St. Mary's QC but I wasn't too keen on the idea because I personally think he wouldn't thrive in a purely traditional environment.

We already inquired at Raya since its also close to our place but wala na daw slots for his age, although at 5 yr and 10 mos by June he's already considered Grade 1 at Raya for the incoming school year. According to them, yung mga nag 5's class at UP CDC (where my son is currently enroled) eh Grade 1 na pagdating sa kanila. Parang hesitant din kami to enrol him at Grade 1 kase baka hinde pa rin siya emotionally mature at that age.

OT: Were also considering The Learning Tree kaso my husband thinks the tuition fee is high. hahaha. Sa son ko naman, based on our experience with UP CDC parang hindi din bagay sa anak ko yung progressive school set-up. He gets bored kase kaya iniisip din namin baka he will thrive more with traditional na may textbooks, homework
etc.

Good luck to us pala sa UPIS entrance exam. Would you know kung pano yung set-up?

^Oo nga, quite steep din (at least for us) ang tuition ng TLT.

What other schools are you considering?

My kid and his cousin are taking the exam on March 31. No idea din about sa set-up. Hindi talaga yan sinasabi/nirereveal ng UPIS e. Basta for sure may written exam (multiple choice yata) at may itatanong din sa kanila na questions. From what I've heard, papapiliin sila kung anong language sila mas comfortable at yon ang ibibigay na medium ng exam.

is it true na pwedeng maabolish ang UPIS? since nagbudget cut ang UP daw, isa sa tinitingnan na pangbawas gastos is the UPIS.. ?

^^ Were considering St Mary's QC pa lang. Ayaw ng hubby ko sa Claret even if he's an alumni. Baka try din namin mag inquire sa Diliman Prep.

Have u inquired at Nest School?

Sa March 29 yung exam sked ng son ko sa UPIS. Wala din kami idea about the exam pero for sure depends on the language child is familar kase parang meron nakalagay sa form.

^ yung pag abolish ng UPIS medyo matagal ng news yun. Pero I dont think they will kase lab school ng College of Educ yung UPIS although they have limited enrolees na nga to 100. Entry point na lang naman is prep and Grade 7  or 1st year HS. Parang ngayon year na lang nga ulit sila ng open for highschool, probably due to students transferring to other schools for 1st year. Also another thing, recently UP closed a deal with Ayala to redevelop the area where current UPIS campus in Katipunan into a commercial area (just like the UP Technohub) and part of the deal is to develop the UPIS campus where it will be transferred inside the campus. Yung dating Narra residence hall daw yung paglilipatan. So with this recent news, parang hinde naman tatanggalin yung UPIS kase gagawa pa nga ng bagong building.

just to give you an idea how difficult it is to enter UP IS:
My daughter took the entrance exam at UPIS years ago. She graduated from UP CDC (na super swerte lang kasi is sya sa nabunot out of only 3 slots available for her age group then).

She passed the exam at UPIS kaso we were informed na around 17 ata sila na tie doon sa cut-off grade. So ira-raffle yung remaining 3 slots among the 17. Needless to say, hindi nabunot ang daughter ko EVEN THOUGH she passed the exam. Sama ng loob ko nun.

She now goes to Raya school and she really enjoys going there. Maganda rin ang development nya sa Raya.

^ kerek, sis. Kaya to those who want to have their children take the UPIS entrance exam, by all means do so but be prepared. Scout na rin for other schools to be safe

^^Pareho tayo sis! Wala akong makuhang info kung ano ang mga pinagawa. Kinuwento lang ng anak ko, naglaro daw sila. Pero hindi raw siya naglaro dahil naubusan na sya ng laruan. Hehe.

^Lisel, you can look visit the other threads about preschool. OT na 'to but I think nursery at Raya is about 60-65K.
