There are really good hotels at very affordable prices, you may want to try Grand Park City hall or M Hotel. If you want to stay in Sentosa island, you can try hotels like Hard Rock Hotel and Festive Hotel.

I highly recommend sa Ruck Sack Inn. They have three locations, two at China Town's Temple Street and Hong Kong Street and one along Lavender Street.
I stayed at Lavender street because it's cheaper. I stayed at their Mix Dorm for only 20SGD per night.
Sa Lavender Street it's around 10mins walk to the nearest MRT station which is Boon Keng but no problems with that because you will be walking along a residential area with lots of trees to shade you from the sun. ^_^
They also have female dorm rooms and private rooms but at Lavender they only have mix dorm and private rooms available.
What I like about their inn is the free all day breakfast which includes coffee, bread and spreads such as kaya, strawberry jam and peanut butter.
Bed is really clean as well as their bathrooms. The bed even has a reading light. I was able to make new friends as well and sometimes they have events for the guests to get to know each other.
At their China Town bracnhes, it's more convenient because you're already at one of their tourist spots but it's a bit more expensive.
Btw they also have MAC computers for guests to use and surf the net. And they don't have curfews because they will give you a key card.
No need for deposit, just confirm to them the dates on when you're gonna stay with them. Oh and most of their receptionists are Filipinos. ^_^

Yes, Rucksack Inn is clean, conveniently located and budget friendly.

Other backpacker hostels I would recommend are:

These are new hostels and very upmarket. Very worth the money.

Hi for Hostel po I recommend Inn Crowd Backpackers, I stayed here for 3 weeks when I was looking for job Most of the crowd are White and busy sila the whole day..

Sama sama sa isang room and toilet is huge.. Free breakfast ( Bread, boiled eggs and coffee) for $20 per person.

Singapore is such a small city with abundance of reliable public transpo system. Kahit nasan ka, you'll find a taxi stand so if you're 4 people, you can always share a cab if hindi kayo malapit sa MRT or Bus stop.

I work near outram park mrt and almost all the boutique hotels nearby there I've seen it and availed by our guests.
affordable and ok hotels are:
Dorsett Hotel - beside Outram Park Mrt exit H
New Majestic Hotel - themed rooms and same company sila ng Hotel 1929 (mas mura ang Hotel 1929).
Park 22 Hotel
Note: Outram Park and Chinatown MRT is walking distance when on the streets. Mga 15 mins walk. These locations got lots of small boutique hotels kaya sya mura.
Convenient yung mga malapit sa Outram Park Mrt coz konting stops na lang eh Sentosa, USS, Vivo City and Harbourfront na. 

Sa Chinatown area syempre for souvenirs and cheap shopping galore.

Sa may clarke quay ok din yung Fragrance Hotel at Hong Kong Street. Tawid lang sa kabila then MRT na. This hotel is walking distance to the Song Fa Bak Kuh Teh (famous shop). I'm salivating now

^ if big group, i think good value to stay in a hostel. You'll be able to occupy a whole dorm. Di lang pwede ang kids as far as i know.

I recommend Rucksackinn. They have 3 branches, we stayed at Hongkong st. Very convenient kasi walking distance lang to Clarke Quay. They have complimentary breakfast as well. Toast bread, cup noodles and bread. You can also use their 3 desktops for free tapos mabilis wifi nila.

Nung time na nag check in kami, pinoy yung receptionist. Meron din sila discounted offers sa mga tourist spots.
