Hi DocShe, just joining. I am a 41 yo wife and mother of 2. I had my pap smear and my ob suggested to the regular screening for women of my age(papsmear. mammogram) September of last year. I did not do the mammogram because  I was not ready for the result. Just a few month ago, I felt pain in my left breast a week before and until a week after my menstruation. The pain was like a pointed pen was pushing inside my breast 'muscles'. It became regular during my menstruation but it goes away afterwards. I did a self breast examination but could really distinguish if it was a lump or just the glands. Just a few weeks ago, i felt pain in my nipple but no discharge. I'm really afraid of what the result might be because my kids are still young, I'm really so 'praning'. I know I must do the mammogram(I've read in the previous posts that breast ultrasound is just for those 35 yo and under). How much is the procedure , when is the best time to do this and what do I need to do before the procedure? Also, does it hurt? Thanks.

Exam- rather than contemplating on it and causing you sleepless nights why don't you go ahead with the mammogram and have yourself checked by a surgeon for peace of mind. Remember, the breast and it's diseases belongs to the surgeon.

Hi DocShe! I've been backreading this thread and you've been really helpful with all the questions. I hope you can answer mine as well

I'm scheduled for a breast ultrasound in Breast Clinic in TMC Monday next week, July 9. And looks like I'm going to have my period anytime now. I know that the advised time to have an ultrasound is 7 to 10 days after the period started. Given that I'm scheduled for Monday, will that be ok? It's very difficult to schedule an appointment sa Breast Clinic sa TMC, I waited for 2 months. I tried walking in before, but it's always fully booked. Is it ok to go ahead and have the ultrasound during my period? Other than the pain, are there reasons why they don't advise having it done during menstruation that could affect the results? Thanks!

Audrey- its not advisable coz aside from the discomfort the results may be not that accurate spbecause of the hormonal changes during menstruation. Why not try other hospital. cardinal Santos Medical Center is on a first come first serve basis. No scheduling needed.

@audreygar86 - clinica manila offers breast ultrasound at PHP 1,030. i will go there tomorrow to have my 2nd ultrasound.

- how soon do you get the results? after how many hours or days?
- who does the actual breast ultrasound? is it also the surgeon? or may ibang gagawa ng ultrasound?

^nakalimutan ko na kung ilang days eh kc binalikan ko siya nung day na nandun din si doc she para isang puntahan na lang ako. sonographer yung gumagawa, tapos check ng radiologist.

Doc She...nagbackread po ako .. and you advice po na sa surgeon mag pacheck up... instead na sa ob..? tama po ba ang intindi ko?..hehe.. ( sorry po if mali ako )  my question lang po is.. are ob not surgeon as well?...  from other forum.. i have read po na obgyne [textspeak!] nagremove ng lump nila.. and [textspeak!] iba naman po eh  nagpaundergo ng operation ng disorders and diseases nila sa ovary such as ovarian dermoid cyst.. endometris.. and etc..

Hi,DocShe! I was diagnosed to have fibrocystic condition. medyo praning lang. will this lead to breast cancer kasi minsan masakit yung right breast ko before ako magkaron ng period. nagself exam ako pero thank god wala nman ako nakapa. pero what test should I do para macheck what causes the pain? tia!

Girl100- yes OB GYN are also surgeons but they deals with the female reproductive organs. The breast and it's diseases belongs to the General Surgeons due to our training and experience. Just to clarify the issue.

Jela- how was the fibrocystic changes diagnosed? Was an ultrasound of your breast ever done? It's normal to feel discomfort on your breast before and during menses. And no it will not lead to cancer.
