Chosing a career thats different from your field

ako naman, accountancy graduate from a reputable school. passed the CPA and CIA boards. have worked in reputable companies sa finance dept.

BUT, what i really want to do is to teach. i tried taking masters in education, pero ang hirap pagsabayin kaya tinigil ko muna. gusto ko sana mag-fulltime sa masters pero di naman kaya mag-aral nang walang pang-tustos. hindi option ang scholarship lang to get my masters kasi i need to support my parents.

i have two dream jobs actually: 1) work in UNICEF; 2) teach. pero hindi pa ko qualified in both without further studies. hay.

same here. my passion is to teach, but i took up nursing in college and now stuck in the bpo industry for the past four years. i am not passionate in either being a nurse or a call center agent. i no longer want to dwell on why i made such choices. now i am really considering getting a degree or master's in education, then specialize in teaching english. like you, i can't quit my job too. it pays the bills. i hope i'll find a way around my situation. i just can't imagine doing what i do for the rest of my life, or even in the next 3 years.

Mahirap kung yung gusto mo talagang gawin ang issue. kung yun kasi talaga gusto kong maging make up artist. Pero kinuha kong course accountancy which I really love din naman.

Kung love for Make Up susundin ko before, hindi praktikal, ano makukuha kong trabaho? magiging make up artist ba ako agad? so hindi ko na yun pinilit, hindi kasi praktikal.

^sis, a good compromise between your "love for make-up" and accountancy is to get a finance job in a cosmetics company. i'm sure it will be so much fun for you. kasi kahit you're not the make-up artist, may opportunity ka na makasama sa mga cosmetics events. try applying to companies such as L'Oreal Phils (yung former boss ko dun nanggaling). feeling ko mas magiging fulfilling para sayo.

^exactly! i love your idea. I was invited for an interview in VMV hypoallergenics kaso conflict sa isa ko pang interview di tuloy ako nakapunta. sa lóreal na apply na ko but no call pa.

well will apply nalang pag medyo mataas na market value ko, haha, fresh grad pa kasi baka kaya hindi pa nila ko consider. will target that soon!

ako naman nursing grad then 2years after bago ako nagka work as ''assistant to the manager'' mag 3years na ako as asst' pero parang hindi ko nagsasawa na ako dahil paulit ulit na lang. gusto ko sana mag try mag apply sa ibang company. kaso disadvantage ko:

-sa ads lage dapat business related course
-gang 25 y.o ang hanap (29 na ako hehe)

∧same here sis clueless pa talaga ako sa kung ano talaga mas gusto. hindi ko pa kasi nasubukan lahat. nakaka cope up naman ako sa lahat ng pag lagyan sa akin. kaso nga lang i know na mas mahirap pa sana ang trabaho ko if mag level up ako. kaso hindi ako mag level up because of my credentials. so medyo burn out na ako sa daily routine. .

sa tingin ko karamihan s atin hindi talaga alam kun ano ang gusto. kasi bata pa tayo i mean after high school pipili tayo ng course s college which would determine what we are going to do for a long time if not for the rest of our lives. bata pa tayo at 16-18 so anong malay natin s buhay di ba? pero maswerte yung napuntahang career tapos natutunan nilang mahalin.

ako i am an engineer in a telco for 10 yrs then i resigned. been floating for more than a year na. in my mid thirties it is only now that i am pursuing what i want to do even as a kid - fashion designer. pero may fear pa rin ako na what if s utak ko lang pala yun? paano kun i took the jump but realized that hindi pa rin pala ito yun.

then again, there's really no way of finding out until you are there.

I'm a Nursing Grad and even passed the Licensure exams. Pero 1st year college pa lang ako gusto ko na talaga i-quit kasi hindi ko talaga makita yung sarili ko sa future na magttrabaho bilang Nurse. Pinilit lang ako ng parents ko na yun ang kunin ko kasi marami na kaming relatives na Nurse sa ibang bansa, dahil bata pa ako nun at wala pang sariling desisyon pumayag na ko. kahit ayaw ko naman talaga pinagbigyan ko sila. Repeater din ako, ayaw ko na talagang magtake ulit ng board exam nun kasi di ko naman talaga balak i pursue, pero ang gusto ng parents ko magtry ako ulit. kaya ayun sinunod ko ulit sila sa gusto nila. Simula ng nakapasa ako hindi ako nagtake ng kahit anong training. Nag apply ako as medical merchandiser, natanggap din naman ako pero nung time na yun, nagkasakit si mama, ang gusto nila tumulong muna ako sa business namin. winithdraw ko na yung appilcation ko. Hanggang ngayon tumutulong pa rin ako sakanila. Ang gusto naman nila ngayon mag volunteer na ko sa ospital. Sa madaling salita i did not stand up for what i really want to do. Sila na yung nagpatakbo ng buhay ko. Di ko na alam kung anong gagawin.

^sis ang maganda niyan alam mo n sila nagpapatakbo ng buhay mo at alam mo n hindi mo gusto yan at kun nasan k ngayon. you can take actions with knowing where you are right now. marami kang gagawing considerations if ever you decide to follow what you want. isulat mo kaya lahat-lahat ng nasa isip mo. yung mga gusto mong gawin at gusto mo maging 5-10 years from now. then ano ang gagawin mo to get it/them. what will be the probable effects, both positive and negative. lahat sulat mo. minsan kasi mas magandang nakikita at nababasa mo yung nasa utak mo para mas objective k.

s simula mahirap at pede kang may masaktan but at the end of the day are you happy? will you be able to say to your creator that you have lived to the fullest the life that was given to you and used all the talents and resources bestowed on you?

I have a degree in business, finished an NVQ in accounting & took some units in MSc marketing. Next year, hopefully, makapasa ako sa law school naman. Ayokong maging forever employee lang

I'm an MMA graduate and working as a multimedia artist. But i really dont like designing. Until now di ko pa din alam kung anong gusto ko. Hopefully next year matry ko na sa ibang field pero Im just 23 pa lang.  Dati gusto ko flight attendant, teacher, sa events but i still dont know kung ano yung pinakagusto talaga. Im also thinking syempre if sa ibang field sa interview iaask why different sa course.

Going to start a new career next year (turning 26 na ko). I'm scared kasi sanay na ko sa teaching, pero need kong kayanin, since this is for me and my family.

i remember talking to someone about this before - about pursuing my "passion" as a career instead of the "career" i have now. what that person told me was that "career" and "passion" are different. career is something a person does to earn a living, but passion is something a person does "on the side" to keep a balanced life. HOWEVER, after hearing that, what i thought to myself was:

"Wouldn't it be great if you could do something you're passionate about for a living?" - i think that would be great. it may not earn as much, but that's the sacrifice you're making. if you love something so much, the satisfaction you'd get from it could exceed the sacrifice made (but of course, depende sa tao).

kasi thinking about it, i'm not passionate with my current career. it's not something i'm excited to go to. it doesn't give me any contentment and satisfaction. but when i teach and i connect with my students, and interact with them, i'm really very happy and content. i imagine working with UNICEF or teaching children and that is the dream that i really long for and desire the most.

Sis, parehas tayo ng iniisip hehe... I know what I really want (as in I see myself doing it for the rest of my life) but I also know it would not pay the bills. So I go for something I also want (next to what I am really passionate about) but would pay the bills.  We really have to choose.

Ako naman nakatapos ng engineering kaso as fresh grad dati di madali makahanap ng work sa same field kasi gusto lagi may experience pero at the same time din kasi di ko rin talaga gusto yung course ko.

Ang hilig ko kasi talaga mula bata pa ako magdrawing, nun bata nga ako parang ginusto ko pa maging designer ng damit haha pero nun magcollege ako ang gusto ko sana either architecture o fine arts kaso at that time walang course na ganun sa college na preferred na pasukan namin. Engineer kasi parents ko, maganda pakinggan onga naman pero yung type of engineering na available di ko type. Kaya sabi ko kunin ko na lang yung 2 year course version nun.

Kinausap ako ng tatay ko na kesho pag nakatapos ako under lang ako ng engineer course etc etc. Eh ako naman neneng nene na di pa rin ganun kasigurado kung ano ba ang gusto, pumayag naman. Tinapos ko yung 5 taon at yun nga nag sipag talaga ako mag aral nun student pa lang ako.

Ng makatapos ako, ang problema, di ko alam kung ano aaplyan ko. Office job lang talaga gusto ko hindi yung nasa manufacturing industry na talagang work ng tinapos ko. Kaya ayun after ilang years naisip ko na parang sinasayang ko lang yun time ko, di naman talaga ako masaya sa ginagawa ko. Magandang experience na rin kasi naging eye-opener sya para sa akin. Nakita ko sa mga office mate ko na inabot na ng 5 to 10 years na andun, matagal ng gusto umalis, andami laging complaints pero di na man makapagresign nastuck na sila hanggang sa di na sila nakaalis at tumanda na dun. Sabi ko, ayokong umabot ako sa ganun. 

Eventually I resigned at bumalik din ako sa pagdadrawing at yun na ang source of income ko at nakakatawa man isipin pero parang joke lang tuloy yung 5 taon kong inaral. Iba rin kasi talaga yung fulfillment kapag gusto mo yung ginagawa ko. Wala siya sa titles o kung ano yung magandang pakinggan sa society. Mas masaya ang buhay kong ginagawa mo yung talagang nagpapasaya sayo.

Me too. I graduated with a Speech Communication degree. Now I am into Supply Chain as Analyst.  I really wanted to be in media or sales pero ewan andito ako sa pagiging analyst. Challenging kasi I am so extrovert tapos prang introvert job tong being an Analyst. Buti I have deviation and still can use the creative side of me which is my sideline online business.

My sister graduated MassComm , she has been a secretary to a multi-national company for 15 years. And she changed her career to nursing. Nag 2nd course sya sa PCHS.With no nursing experience after she graduated for 2 years, nagpunta sya agad sa US as tourist, then the rest is history. She is now a nurse. Ngayon naman gusto nya mag aral ng pagiging Anesthesiologist. She has a risky attitude but look at where she is now..
