Chosing a career thats different from your field

Hi sissies! Tell me if there's a topic like this already but so far I haven't found any..

So anyone?

Ako kasi i took up interior design.. kakagraduate ko lang last march 2010 then nagboard exam ako pero hindi pinalad.. ngayon napapaisip ako kung eto ba talaga yung gusto kong gawin or hindi..

actually kahit bago pa ko magboard napaisip na ko kung interior talaga yung calling ko..ayoko lang magshift nun because of two reasons: una, nakakahiya man sabihin pero hindi ko pa rin talaga mahanap o maisip kung ano gusto kong gawin sa buhay, pangalawa, mahal ang tuition naisip ko naman na kawawa magulang ko kung magshift pako..

so ngayon eto napapaisip ako..i'm on a jobhunt right now pero iniisip ko kung ang kukunin ko bang job eh interior pa rin o kahit hindi ko na lang field basta alam ko..

may mga ganito rin ba sa inyo? and kung meron man share your stories..

i think it would help me decide

Ako siz when i graduated in High school .. Like ko na talaga yung Tourism .. Pero that time kasi in demand ang nursing so my mom like niya mag nursing ako .. Ok naman sa akin .. 2nd year ako nagka-sore eyes ako .. so absences .. kumpleto ako excuse letter with medical cert .. pero binagsak pa rin ako ng prof ko kasi dami ko daw kulang e hindi niya ako pinayagan mag submit at mag exam .. So after nun tinatamad na ako mag aral ..  Kaya nag shift akong tourism ayun naeenjoy ko kasi yun talaga first love ko .. 

Now i'm working in a travel agency .. last year pag graduate ko prefer ko talaga yun field ko .. pero sa ngayon siz napapaisip ko parang ok lang naman kung hindi mo field yung work mo as long as nagagampanan mo yung trabaho mo at naeenjoy mo .. Sa ngayon siz praktikal na lang parang go go na lang kung may opportunity ..

Ako naman Pol Sci graduate and guess what i'm working in a call center. I want to take up law pero parang hindi na praktikal...kasi nakalimutan ko na [textspeak!] mga pinag aralan ko tas tumutulong din ako sa pagpapaaral ng kapatid ko (panganay kasi ako eh) tas feeling ko pa ang liit lang ng naitutulong ko sa bahay...minsan lang ako makapag ambag para sa mga gastusin...so kung mag-aaral pa ko, pano na?

narealize ko sana pala pinursue ko na lang yung field ko...i mean, not to study law and be a lawyer but to be in the right discipline like legal secretary, or anything that requires social sciences course. kasi yung call center industry, walang age limit. im 24 y/o now. they say bata pa raw ako...24 y/o still trying to figure out what should i do...im glad pa rin because im not alone. meron akong mga friends with the same situation, may ilan mas worst pa...so sis snix, i hope me telling this would help you decide.

sis mynameisjuaiy- wow sis hanga ako sa mga katulad mo na inuuna yung pamilya!  i'm 20, iniisip ko matanda nako pero hindi ko pa rin alam kung ano kukunin ko..dumadagdag pa sa stress ko na yung iba kong classmates may work na ako wala naman ako makita

@sis snix: wag kang mag-alala no...tsk tsk...bata ka pa...wag mong sabihin matanda ka na...ako nga eh 24 years old pero feeling ko baby pa ko. hehe...saka nung pagka-graduate ko sis hindi naman agad ako nagka-work. actually, before pa nga ko grumaduate eh naghahanap na ko pero hindi pa rin ako natatanggap, oh! matagal din bago ako nagkawork, i was 20 din nun nung naghahanap ako ng work...so, relax lang sis!

@ snix - you're only 20. don't feel bad that you haven't decided exactly what it is you want to do, because not a lot of people know what they want at that age either!

if you don't have a clear idea of what it is you want to do, wag ka muna magshift. just stay with ID muna while you're figuring out what you want to do -- or don't want -- for the rest of your life.

i graduated from fine arts thinking i'll be doing work along those lines the rest of my life. after working for 5 years and taking a year of my master's, i realized i didn't want that. sayang tuition at oras? hindi rin. mas sayang to stay with something that i don't really like just because that's the course i took in college. but it took me years to figure out what it was i really wanted, and it was completely unrelated to my course. i'm a much happier person now, no regrets at all.

basta when figuring out what career you want, you have to learn to listen to yourself, and be brutally honest with yourself. in the end, only you will have to live with the decisions you make, so make sure you have your best interests at heart.

sis mynameisjuaiy and sis caeca- thanks for the words of advice! it really helped.. actually sis caeca hindi nako pwede magshift kasi graduate nako.. ayoko rin naman during my college years since mahal yung course ko kawawa naman magulang ko

nastress lang siguro ko dahil unti-unti na nagkakawork yung mga iba kong classmates.. i don't want to reach a year being unemployed..and hindi rin kasi ko talaga sanay ng nasa bahay lang at walang ginagawa..

i find my life monotonous everytime i wake up in the morning..i'll try looking for other jobs as well until i find my calling..

i now work as a personal trainer. i love what i do! at first, my relatives were appalled that i was letting go of my last "stable," corporate job as a graphic artist. i first worked as a barista (while in school), a receptionist, and several times as a graphic artist. i realized that i actually enjoyed helping people more than making pretty pictures.

when you wake up not looking forward to the day, that's an indicator that you don't feel fulfilled doing what it is you do. you're young sis, this is the best time to experiment, find out who you are and what you want, make mistakes, and learn from them!

thanks for the advice sis caeca.. i really feel a lot better right now.. I hope that i can also find my true calling whatever that is..

Kakatuwa naman ang stories nyo, I always hear that you should follow your heart but it's like everyone else is saying be practical and take anything!

Ako naman, I tend to like jobs that I'm good at. So kahit na people tell me that I'd be great as a ________ kasi ganun ang hobby ko, minsan iba talaga yung alam mo kung saan ka magaling. It's not just enjoying things, but being passionate about it.

@snix I went through a "process of elimination" before I found out what I really wanted to do. OK lang naman yon, as long as you don't think you're wasting your time. Hope you find whatever it is!

Yeah, siguro naka-apat na offices ako (and four different kinds of work) before I found the thing that I enjoyed doing. Eventually found it at age 27. For me what I really want pala is a combination of: being respected, being good at it, tsaka having a flexible sked. Now I'm a freelancer/consultant, and lahat ng bagong job ko dinadaan ko through that test. So far I've been happy pa rin. (And I'm 31 years na, the great thing about consulting is that you get more respect over time rather than less.)

mine naman graduate ako ng mass com. khit hndi ko talaga gusto yon kase main purpose ko ay maka graduate [textspeak!] at mag karoon ng diploma, nakaka pagud kase college life ko lahat ng department may id ako kaka shift ko  . after nag tayo ako ng coffee shop and na realize kong bumabalik yng dati kng hilig mag luto. before kase noong sinabi ko sa mom ko na gusto ko mag culinary hndi pa ganon ka kilala ang culinary ayaw daw nya akong magging kusinera [textspeak!]. but then I think na realize nya na yon talaga ang passion ko and she offered me na sagot nya Ituition ko kng gusto ko, syempre gusto ko. and I'm very proud na wala akong absent sa class namin kahit isa, kahit may undoy pa pinilit ko pumasok lol. now chef Instructor na ako another unexpected twist sa karera ko.

@ sis cesg: im glad you're in the career that you want right now. kasi ako im going to find it pa. i'll remember what you did...process of elimination. hopefully makita ko na rin [textspeak!] career na dun na talaga ko forever...kasi 4 years na ko sa current work ko. what's holding me back is the compensation. kasi pag nagpursue ako ng ibang job for sure liliit [textspeak!] salary ko...what can you advice? okay lang ba yun? im still single pa naman and young so i think hindi pa naman huli ang lahat para sa career hunt...?

Sis, mej optimistic ang mode ko ngayon so I will be encouraging, haha. I think if the career shift is toward something you really love, and can imagine doing for decades (before retirement) then a paycut now is a small price to pay and it will be worth it eventually. And since wala ka pa namang pinapa-aral then the time to make the move is now.

BUT if you're not sure... kasi ako rin I made a move and took a paycut thinking "eto na" pero di pala. I don't know what you're doing now and what you want to shift to pero can you do it little by little? Like do small projects muna, but not quit your job? Eventually you'll see kasi what makes you happier and maybe that's the better move. But di ko alam what you do so generic lang muna ito. Good luck!

Hi! mga sis..good thing i found this thread. Im a licensed Nutritionist-dietitian,naka 2 years nako sa hospital at narealize ko na di ata ko bagay doon. before ako nagresign natanggap ako sa isang dialysis center. Mas okay kesa sa hospital when it comes sa benefits and felxible ang schedule. After 9 months, di pa rin ako masaya. Feeling ko kasi mas masaya ako pag sa travel industry ako magwork.

Nagtatry naman ako mag-apply sa mga travel agencies kaso di ako tinatanggap dahil iba natapos ko and isa pa, syempre madidisappoitn parents ko. Eto din kasi natapos ng mom ko.

Gusto ko din sana magwork sa Public health like sa provincial health center, kaso baka nga di okay yung compensation. Mahirap ang ganito.

@ sis cesg: wow! thanks talaga sa payo mo...well may pinapag-aral ako eh. yung isa matatapos na ng college tas yung bunso magka-college pa lang. so sabi ko dun sa kapatid ko na ga-graduate na pag nag shift ako ng work, may possibility for paycut na sana matulungan nya ko pag nagka-work sya...thanks talaga sis ha...appreciate it!

hi snix,  i hear you.
i am engineering graduate (sobrang ang hirap para sa akin 'to ) but working in the health field. gaya mo nahiya akong magshift nun dahil ang mahal ng tuition fee at di ko rin alam kung ano gusto ko that time--ab com arts, political science, econ, eng'g.   worked in a telecom company but i was never happy.  now i am in the field where i never expected myself to work.  any field but this.
but hey, i am happy.  i dont consider it as working.   its more like having fun.
(i do business and investing on the side, of course)
you're young you have time to explore your options-time is on your side.
who knows this will open a door to greater opportunities.  gaya nung nangyari sa akin(well, part of it    )

Hi sis! nakaka-relate ako, as of now di ko pa lam kung san ako mapupunta or yung field na natapos ko eh para saken ba talaga.. I recently passed our board exam.. I'm a nutritionist-dietitian also, pero nahihirapan ako maghanap ng work, yung mga pinasahan ko ng resume, mostly hospitals, di naman ako tinatawagan or tinetxt.. ayun, nakakalungkot lang na wala kami mapasahan ng resume, dahil ang career ladder sa hospital ay mabagal daw. Minsan naiisip ko na dapat ba kinuha ko yung 1st choice ko dati (accountancy), at naiisip ko din na dapat ba mag-apply na ko sa ibang companies kahit malayo sa course na natapos ko. Sis, napre-pressure din ako sa iba kong classmates na may work na, pero ako wala pa.

ako naman nursing grad and RN. For 4 years I was doing freelance and online selling until one day I got tired of it and started looking for a job. I actually don't know what I want, so ang ginawa ko nag-apply ako kung saan may hiring. I was trained at a call center for 2 months then they ditched me. Called for a training at a hotel as front desk, they ditched me again. I was on a career limbo for a year, ang hirap kasi maghanap ng work kung BSN graduate ka, let alone a registered nurse kasi lagi akong sinasabihan ng mga nag-iinterview, dapat sa hospital ka nagtatrabaho. Eh sakin naman, i felt na nursing is not my calling. so i explored other options to "find" myself.

Right now, I'm very happy with my work. I work for an airline as a frontliner and customer service agent and I love what I do now. A lot of my coworkers have been asking me why I'm working here, I simply answer, the sound of an airplane is a melody to my ears. hehe kidding aside, i really think that the hospital is not just for me... my advice, explore and persevere. It took me 4 years before realizing this is what i wanted to do Godbless on your journey!
