IMPORTING
« on: September 26, 2010, 10:15:22 pm »
Hello Fellow GTalkers,

I just opened my pre-order on US shops, but later I realized that taxes in the US are not inclusive of their posted prices, so was wondering about the sales tax. How do they charge it? What if the credit card to be used is from New Jersey, but the items will be delivered to California?  :-\

Hope you can help. Thanks in advance!

usually kasi sis.. pag importing ng mga products.. like u.s., china, etc.. dapat kasama na sa mark up mo [textspeak!] price ng shipping at tax para d ka nalulugi sa shipping and tax ;-)

are you referring to the sales tax in the US? i think it depends on the store location. like if sa CAL, 12% ata.

Usually it ranges from 8% to 12% depending on the State where the item will be purchased.  The tax is computed on the total amount of the item bought.  Kunwari you bought an item worth $100, just get the 8% and add it on the total amount, or simply $100 x 1.08%  = $108

Yan ang babayaran mo.  Pero wala pa jan ang shipping.  This is normally flat or included na ang tax sa shipping service.  Most of the US online stores offer FREE shipping for a minimum amount bought.  Pero within US & Canada territory lamang.

Kapag ship International, then they will charge the international rates.

sales tax in the US is required only if the store you are buying the item from has any sort of physical presence (i.e. office, store, warehouse, distribution center, etc) in the state you are currently in. For example, if you reside in Arizona and you are buying from let's say Amazon.com or Buy.com who has no physical presence in AZ, then your purchases are not subject to tax. However, purchases from the same store by NY residents will be subject to sales tax.

hope this helps!

Thanks mga sis!

Appreciate all your responses... Pero dba we buy online, so how do we know where the items we ordered would come from?

I make it a point that I include all necessary expenses to every item I sell, kaya nga nahihirapan ako ngayon kase di ko alam ano pa ang idadagdag ko...

Also, mga sis... anyone of you who ask someone in the states to purchase your orders for you? If so, how much do you pay them? Thanks po!

sis, my suggestion is to make a list of online stores you prefer para dito lamang order ang mga clients mo
then try to buy some dummy item from that store, without actually entering your CC details.
i do this sometimes to check how much ang total na babayara.  just click the check out button then makikita mo kung magkano ang total plus the tax and shipping.
so magkakaroon ka ng good estimate kung magkano ang taxes ng bawat online store na ito.
it's all the same kahit saan pa nila iship yan kasi you will pay upfront, hindi naman after maship sa'yo.
flat din and shipping any state in the US, pero iba na kung international.

Thanks sis jmeangeL. Actually I do that all the time, but then the tax cannot be seen unless you input the CC details. But I think I solved the prob already. I asked someone kase to try to order for me, and dun nakita namin ang tax which is 9.75% kase it will be shipped in LA. Grabe! ang mahal!!!  :o

So now i know na the better way to compute price for each item... Thanks for all your help!

In Pennsylvania tax is 6%.. If i order online for cosmetics, neiman marcus,sephora,saks,etc... it is 6% on top of the total amount you are buying. Kahit saan state pa galing it is 6% in PA. Now there are also items that are tax free.. For example you go to NY and it is opening of school year... It is tax free when you buy shoes during that season... NY tax is 8.75%. I know it depends on state where you want your items to be shipped.. and when you check also HELP option or FAQs on the site where you wanna buy, they also have a thing that no sales tax Except for the following State.. It is usually indicated if there is or there's no tax on that state for that item.. Cause it depends where there warehouse is.

Importing as in buying in container loads? or just buying in bulks?

how big and how much are you willing to spend?

Alibaba is the best way to buy items from China.  Sellers have feedback on them on most accepts Paypal so you will be assured that you can cancel the transaction if there's no actual shipment.

Shipping?  China uses Hongkong EMS para mas tipid.  You can also use DHL or UPS.

use this to estimate:

(cost of item + cost of shipping) x 12% = tax

EMS is express mail service or your friendly kartero (philpost)
the item will be delivered straight to your house if thru DHL, UPS etc.
if thru EMS and you have to pay taxes then the nearer post office to your house will send you a note saying that your item has arrived and you need to pay for customs duties & taxes

kahit sa DHL or UPS may customs duties & taxes din pero they pay for it muna so they can deliver your item sa house then reimburse you on the amount they pay plus handling charges

if you're only going to spend 10K for a stall, i suggest you find a reliable online seller that has pre-order items.  iyong iba kasi sa kanila may kakilala sa customs kaya nailulusot ang bagahe

what about japanese or korean prods? i'd really like to start a small biz din but ive no idea how to order.

iyong totoong japanese & korean products come japan & korea thru buyers from that area.  kadalas mga online seller na may kaibigan or kamag-anak sa japan or korea.
magpapa-order ng item then doon bibilhin at ipapa-balik-bayan box papunta dito
mga japan at korean sytle lamang na made in China

hindi naman lahat ng made in China ay cheap.  there are many manufacturing company in China that creates korean & japanese styles clothes of high quality.

you just need to find one
