BABY / INFANT SEIZURE

my baby turned 5 months last aug.15 but prior to that day, she had a seizure attack. she's perfectly healthy, fine, never been bumped, fell, or anything that caused the seizure. the 1st episode happened when my brother, aunt, baby and helper sent my sister in school then the odd thing happened. my aunt described it as she's staring blankly and her face became dark, she's drooling, and her extremities became stiff. i heard the story when i came home from work in the morning since i'm working in a BPO. another episode happened while i was sleeping when i heard my brother shouting my name, then i woke up forcefully witnessing my baby's seizure. her eyes were looking upward, she became red then became colorless. that was the time we hurriedly go to the hospital. we arrived in the ER and she was diagnosed of having CYANOSIS. her pedia referred my baby to a pedia-neurologist. 3rd episode happened in the hospital at 12mn and 4th, 8am the following day (on her 5th month birthday). that ws the time she was given phenobarbital and diazepam (valium) in a half dose. she was very groggy and sleepy and the rest of day didn't have seizures. i have 3 doctor friends also asking me the same questions: does she have fever, been fallen, or birth related issues and i said none. nothing. my baby had her EEG and MRI which resulted as normal but when were about to be discharged, the pedia-neuro explained to me that she noticed a cyst (not threatening but may trigger the seizure) that shouldn't grow. all i can is that i was totally helpless, surprised and really worried esp my husband is not with me right now. there are no seizures at all bec i'm giving her phenobarbital 15mg 2x a day and i have a follow up on 28 to get the MRI plates from the doctor.

does any of you has the same or any experience to share and how's the development of your baby? the doctor told me that there's no develpment delay whatsoever but the drug's side effect is drowsiness and baby becomes hyperactive so she'll be changing the prescription sfter 2 weeks. hope this is NOTHING serious. really, because i'm so worried...

did she just get her vaccinations prior to the onset of seizures?

yung girl ko 2 times and bunso baby boy ko once due to high fever din
katakot talaga ito lalu na kung ikaw lang sa bahay...yung itsura kc tumitirik ang mata, nangingitim at parang nagingisay..kakaawa halos lahat ng santo matatawag mo .ngayun  bantay sarado kpag may fever as in walang tulugan round the clock..
the pedia advised na kapag nagcoconvulsion dapat daw naka side view yung head at basain yung ulo then derecho agad e.r. para mabigyan ng valium .

I don't really know what cyanosis is... anyway, just really work with your doctors (and should you feel your baby isn't making progress, don't be afraid to seek a second opinion or find better doctors, or other answers)...

I do have a friend whose baby has many different problems which results in seizures... and she's found that her baby gets more seizures when fed formula milk... so her baby now is on breast milk and all-organic diet (to remove any effect of preservatives in her system) so maybe you can continue breastfeeding a longer time

Having an epileptic friend with an epileptic baby... this much I know... in crude terms, seizures basically BREAK brain connections... so it is very important that if your baby will have a seizure disorder, that it's managed, so that there won't be developmental delays... kasi nga if it's not managed, then developing brain connections will be broken, and there may be developmental delays (my godson only started sitting up around age 2)

Get all the help you need... ask your doctor if they can refer you to support groups, yahoogroups, forums etc that can help you be informed... so you can help your baby all you can...

from a mother's point of view: seizures will truly send a mother into a panic attack. it is not something to dismiss because it is not normal. when i gave birth to my son, he had several seizure episodes which were secondary to sepsis (systemic infection of the blood). he was also given anticonvulsants.

from a doctor's point of view: seizures can be secondary to a lot of things: brain injury most commonly, a fall; hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar levels; infections, tumors and the list goes on. Just recently, my 18month old had seizure episode associated with fever. This is what us doctors call Benign Febrile Convulsions. This may occur up to 6 years old and the only treatment is control of fever by paracetamol. Some doctors give prophylactic Diazepam whenever the child has fever, some don't. If you have a family member who has seizure episodes, it is contributory. Please take note though that if it occurs the first time, an EEG is warranted to make sure that there are no other causes other than fever.

As for your case sis, it is indeed a mystery where your baby's seizure is coming from - could be from that cyst. your doctor advised you very well on the side effects of the anticonvulsants because some parents get alarmed sometimes with their children's sudden change in behavior after the medications. Just consult your neuro religiously so that your child will be monitored properly. It isnt easy but you have to hang in there and be strong for your baby.

Has anyone knows about INFANTILE SPASM?  Its a kind of seizure also sa infants...baka meron po pwedeng mag share ng experience nila with this.
