I'm also applying for student visa.  I'm aiming for October intake.  and I also plan to work part-time.

Carolski, are you also working? Are you staying with a host family / homestay?  based on my research, yun yung common.. do you recommend it? =)

yes im working, coz ang mga student visa naman eh pedeng magwork partime 20hrs/week. im staying with my sister but still im paying my rent...may mga ibang students naman na walang family [textspeak!] and they are in a sharing accommodation... kaya it depends sayo kung san mo talaga gusto tumira...ang school mo ang magaarrange ng tirahan sayo kapag wala kang family [textspeak!]...

october is near...prepare kanaba?

i will take my IELTS next week.  According to IDP, kaya naman daw oct. if not January na.. which is still OK with me =)  I'm planning to take 1 year diploma course sa TAFE.  I'm excited at the same medyo scared din.. can you please share your experiences so far? =)

goodluck sayo i hope makapasa ka, madali lang naman ang ielts eh, im taking diploma cours also pero hindi sa tafe kasi sobrang mahal sa kanila for diploma course lang kaya sa ibang college ako sa city...

make it sure na tatagal ka [textspeak!] ng 2 yrs for study para maging ok ang pagapply mo ng permanency, kung nakatapos ka jan sa pinas ng bachelor its much better for u to take masteral degree

den pagdating mo [textspeak!] imsure eh summer, kya iready mo na ang mga pangattire mo, kasi pabonggahan ang mga damit [textspeak!]

Colleges and any tertiary institution that is not a university are considered TAFE, aren't they? If an institution offers Certificates, Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas, that's TAFE.

Also, Masteral is not a word, it should be Master/Master's Degree. Not bagging you ha, wala lang kasi makakaintindi dito if you say 'Masteral'.

Homestaying is a very good way to learn the local culture, the ways of the local people and familiarise yourself with the accent and local slangs, that is if you pick a local family. I highly recommend that you do it for your first 6 or so months here in Australia. After that you could find your own place, whether to rent on your own or share with other people.

Technically, non-degree courses offered by non-universities (such as Certificates, Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas) are TAFE. "Colleges" offer the above but mostly cater to international students because they pay full fees, in fact there's been a surge of them because of the increasing number of international students and many of them (if not the majority) only accept international students, but ultimately these so-called "colleges" nonetheless fall under the umbrella of TAFE. I've never heard anyone say "oh I go to college". You either go to TAFE or to uni.

You made the right decision of choosing to go to university instead, a degree is much more esteemed and favoured by employers.

hey girls I just arrived here at Sydney on the last week of May for a one year course. =)


Looking for a part-time job here is harder than it seems!  Because of the 20hr/wk limitation, employers are more hesitant to because they want people who can work extra hours when they need extra hands, those that are more flexible.  Specially here in the city.  It took me 2 months to find mine and it's just casual(meaning there's no fixed schedule, no sure hours per week, they just call you when they need extra people to fill in) and hassle coz i could be assigned to any outlet. 

just a few heads up too...cost of living here is extremely crazy.  I was quite surprised. A minimum train ride costs 4.40AUD round trip. (around 180PHP!) That's just around 6++ stations covered.

Fast food here costs 200-600PHP.

Also...it's so quiet here!  5PM palang sarado na mga malls.  Nalurklurk ako.  hahahaha


But other than those downsides, it's been so great having a sense of safety.   Unlike sa Pinas when you have to look over your shoulder 24/7 baka meron nang nakaabang na may balisong sa tabi tabi.

Also, the train system is super nice which is something I LOVE.  Walang siksikan na tipong sa LRT na kahit di ka kumapit ok lang sa sobrang sikip.

So anyways, if you're planning to come here, don't rely on your possible earnings from a part-time job.  I've applied to over a hundred part-time jobs(Fastfood, grocery, dept. store, etc) that doesnt even need skilled backgrounds...but ang sakit, pati mcdo tinanggihan ako? hahaha

ganyan din ako nung mga first month ko pa lang dito.conver ako ng convert ng AUD to Peso ayun napagalitan tuloy ako.hwag daw isipin ang peso. lol !

^itanong mo sis malay mo free or may discount.dito sa Darwin,NT free ang bus ride namin as long as may uni id ka. wala nga lang kaming train dito. $2 ang bus fare good for 3 hours na yun at kahit san pa punta mo dalawa lang mall namin dito,malaki pa uniwide !  sarado na pag patak ng 3pm lol !

Re: jobs: Maybe your résumé needs some tweaking? If Maccas rejected you, that's not a good sign. But be persistent, you'll find a job din! And oh, don't put a photo on your résumé, it's frowned upon. Also, if your university has a careers advisor, maybe you could ask them to help you with your résumé and your job search.

Also is there any Filipino restaurant you can apply to? You may have better chances in a Filipino-owned business.

About cost of living naman, $4.40 for a daily ticket is actually quite cheap! Here it Melbourne it's $6+ for a daily ticket. Although there's nothing wrong with it, converting to PhP all the time does not really help, baka ma-depress ka pa thinking that everything is so expensive. And compared to other 1st world countries, our cost of living is actually relatively affordable.

Fastfood (McDonald's in particular) actually is some of the cheapest sorts of ready-made food you can get here.

There's more to see in Sydney after 5pm than malls.

You're lucky your trains aren't overcrowded! Here in Melbourne it's a nightmare and 3rd-worldish during peak hour.
