Hi mommies,
I have a suggestion sa mga moms...

I know how learning the alphabets, numbers, words, etc can be important.. But you know, it is not everything.
I really think what's more important is yung social skills. The basics - SHARING, KINDNESS, TAKING TURNS, PLAYING FAIR, POLITENESS, in short, GOOD MANNERS.

i can say that because i've encountered young kids na oo nga ang tatalino! Alam ang planets, can name all the animals, colors, etc at a young age. Pero pagdating sa social skills, bagsak.
Hindi marunong makipaglaro, gusto sa kanya lang toys, nakikipag-agawan ng laruan, nananakit kapag hindi nakuha ang gusto or iiyak, nanunulak. It's really not a pretty sight. Even simple "please" and "thank yous". Please don't forget to teach them those things. Teach them while they're still young.

of course dapat naman talaga ituro ang right manners at early age. I guess right now kasi the thread here is more of how to teach the kids "academically" but it doesnt mean we dont teach our kids right manners. We are just sharing techniques how to teach them at home kasi automatic naman yung manner ituturo ng magulang yun sa mga anak nila unless of course ang magulang itself eh walang manners.

naku, I'm one of those who posted about teaching manners, I hope it didn't come across as me saying that parents who teach academics don't teach manners na :( I hope no one took offense :(

it was just a friendly reminder kasi I was one of those parents who was so eager for my kid to learn things that she will learn naman in school. i read an article that kind of changed my perspective and I thought of sharing the reminder here.

i guess it's just a reminder to put as much effort into teaching our kids "life stuff". To be as proud when they say "please" and "thank you" and when they're nice to other kids. That we should be more worried if our kids don't know that hitting other kids is not good than if they haven't mastered counting up to 20 :)

And no, based on my observations, hindi lahat ng parents automatically teach manners by example. They teach manners the same way they teach academic stuff (lecturing them, reminding them, etc) when it's actually by consistent example :)

peace :-*

Kids are like sponges. They adopt to their environment. :) like what you said if the example they are seeing consistently isnt good then regardless how much you teach them useless lang. (As an example sa mga pamangkin ko) no matter how much we remind them na eto ang tama, mali yan ang nakikita nila sa bahay nila is hindi same ng sinasabi namin parang hangin lang kausap namin. Pag nasa house namin sila maayos sila, disente. Pag sa kanila na you will see totally different person. As in parang nag 360 ang mundo.

I dont take offense about being reminded of teaching my kid good values. I appreciate that. But i just want to point out rin lang na this thread mostly more on sharing techniques on how to teach our kid academically. Lalo na karamihan sa mga gtalker dito na mommies eh working parent. But the reminder about teaching good values  is welcome Naman. I just want to clear rin na baka kasi iba rin ang dating sa iba since we mostly discuss academic teachings and techniques. Baka ma misinterpret kame na we forget to teach na our kids good values.

sorry if my post came out too strong.
but you'll be surprised at how many parents forget to teach their kids these simple things. or maybe they do but their kids don't listen to them? i dunno...

i understand how we parents want our kids to excel. Believe me i've been there too. 10 yrs ago with my first child. LOL. Sahm ako so natutukan ko talaga sya and by the time she's 4yrs old, she can already read simple children's books. Before she went to school she already knew how to spell simple 3-4 letter words, basic addition and subtraction. :D
With my 2nd child, hindi na ako ganun katiyaga tumutok, but she still learned those things anyway! LOL

So what i'm just saying is that when our toddlers/preschoolers are going out mingling with other kids, yun ang mas importante --their interaction with other kids.
So at very young age, better let them PLAY With Other babies/toddlers/kids their age. (especially mga Only Child). Teach them how to socialize well. That's how you can start teaching them manners, through practice.

Just like what sis shenshen said, academics kids learn at school; manners they learn at home.

That's just my POV. Sorry again. Carry on...

Its fine sis. Sa case ng pamangkins ko, yung sister in law ko well too lazy to teach manners talaga. Then yung isa pa na di nakikinig, i agree with you that. Peer pressure normally sa school i guess. Well sometimes kasi even we try to tell our kids to mingle with other kids, some kids are just born shy or introvert. Sa case ng anak ko, he prefers older companion and friends. Pagdating sa kids, he is just quiet, observant. He sometimes laugh with their jokes sa schoolbus, other than that, he prefers to just read or do his assignments. Even me when I was kid, i dont play that much with my classmates. I only have like 3 playmates na every weekend sinasama ng mga friends ng parents ko. But aside from that, i prefer to be alone and quiet. But im glad lumaki naman ako na okay. And i think my kid is also the same.

Anyways each kid is different. Each parents have different ways too. Its just up to the parents how they will make their kids understand that everything they do and say is for their own good.

I am now trying the preschool prep videos. so far okay naman ang results.once a day i let him watch 1 video. it has meet the colors, shapes, numbers, letters. it also includes phonics and sight words.
we use marbles for counting.
i believe clay helped a lot in making his hands stronger. madiin na sya magsulat unlike before na ang light lang.

I can now share into this. Before my toddler start schooling, I am a lurker on this thread and it helps a lot especially for a working mom like me.
I have 3 and 4 y/o and now both in NURSERY. What I am doing is to read ahead on their books and I google some activities for them to do when I get home. Luckily and thank God, they always want to study! Minsan when Im tired na from work, they are still insisting me to read and study and the result so far - their quiz and Pre-quarterly exam are perfect :)

well youtube educational videos are great specially the phoenics song! dont judge me ok? hahahaha
i gave my kid her ipad after she finish her writing practice with me and i let her watch for 30 minutes only.
after that balik n kame sa puzzle or role playing doctor, cook, tea party games.

i agree with other moms that what is more important for our kids are learning social and emotional skill.
i want to give her the best chance so at an early age of 2.5 she can now read 3 children books, learn abc, math in numbers, words and dots - counting
match making, shapes, animals, objects, fruits, vegetables. basic mandarin like counting, greetings, school things, food and colors.
oh, and she knows how to swim already but we didnt teach her, she just floated and swim naturally! hahaha.. fearless mana saken?!! so we let her be kinda independent din like she
feed her self kahit super messy after. at least natututo sya kumain mag isa.

i noticed she had improvement in her personality when my niece visited and stayed with us for a month.
my kid is more kulit and talkative so i really want to expose her with other playmates!

I was a bit surprised with my 1 and 10 months old daughter, kase there are times na nakikita ko na responsible na sya at parang alam nya na anong dapat. Like for example when she opened fudgee bar

Wow!!

Well she knows how to say thank you and sorry na. :) enkyu and soyie. hehe.

Hi everyone!  I loved reading everyone's POVs. :)

Regarding the teach manners before academics, I agree.  Though I also acknowledge that this thread is more centered on teaching children academically.

However, for young children, I believe that we parents should fret muna in teaching our kids academics, as in the "three r's".

I work in a progressive preschool and I learned a lot about early childhood education within the past year of my working there.  Based on my observation, seminars I attended and articles  I read, I conclude that young children learn best when they are playing.  The things that children learn while playing would serve as the foundation of the 3 R's eventually.  Sure, we can make them memorize or recite the ABC.  But if they don't feel the "R-ness" of "R" or how numbers are used in real life, it's useless.  Like, so what if they have memorized it?  Your child's being "advance" in his/her toddler years does not guarantee academic excellence in the coming years.  They eventually forget those "advance" lessons.

For young children, play is the best way to learn.  Save those worksheets for much, much later.  Just let your child enjoy.  Let him play and be amazed how his vocabulary grows (my son mastered counting by playing hide and seek) and how he learns to solve problems.

If your child has questions, take time to answer them well.  If he asks, it means he needs and wants to know.  That's your opportunity to teach him.  It means he is interested, so it's important to him.

Again, I get that this thread is more for those who want advice on how to teach academics, but that's my humble POV: don't get stressed over the worksheets.  Talk to your child about his environment and let him play.

Quote
During play, children also increase their social competence and emotional maturity. Smilansky and Shefatya (1990) contend that school success largely depends on children’s ability to interact positively with their peers and adults. Play is vital to children’s social development. http://www.education.com/reference/article/importance-play--social-emotional/

My daughter is turning 4 next month and Nursery siya ngayon. She's good in academics as per her teacher and just advised us to practice her fine motor skills. She can hold a pen properly naman. How do you practice your kids sa fine motor skills nila? Anong activities ang puwede?

^sis just let her play around with playdough, Legos, or making art crafts (paggamit ng scissors, etc), coloring, drawing doodles..

On topic: What i did was read to my then-toddlers every night, or anytime during the day pag may time. We have lots of books. Storybooks, children's books, children's encyclopedias (maraming pictures para interesting), and more storybooks. Minsan sila lang tumitingin tingin sa mga pages. Hanggang eventually sila na pinagbabasa ko sa gabi.
With reading ang dami ng kasama dyan -- identifying objects, spelling, colors, new words, etc.
Now they're school-aged kids, mahilig sila magbasa ng books.

With numbers, it's better to teach them while doing something or relating it to everyday activities (counting cookies, pagnabawasan kinain na cookies edi subtraction yun, etc)

I'm one of those moms who believe na habang bata pa, toddler/preschool, what they need more is play (outside at the playground, or inside the house with toys). That's how they learn. By incorporating lessons through play. And with play, they will also learn how to interact well with others. Being kind with playmates, saying please/thank you/sorry/excuse me, sharing toys and taking turns, etc. sa tingin ko mas importante to learn at that age.

Are there are Filipino workbooks for preschool? I'd like to teach our daughter na kasi to read and write pero gusto ko Tagalog. There's no way for her to learn how to read that kasi dito so the burden is on me. Ako talaga ang magiging Filipino teacher nya.

I checked the NB website pero I couldn't find any :(

I have a son 3years and 3months old, and he's a good reader na. :) I am also teaching him math, yung simpleng addition lang from 1 to 10, and kaya na niya using his fingers. Maybe tiyagaan lang and laging kausap with eye-to-eye contact. We also make learning fun para parang naglalaro lang. We also read encyclopedia for small kids and very interested na siya. He loves reading about Volcanoes, Clouds. We also taught him how body works and nakakatuwa kasi nageenjoy siya and curious, kaya he knows the brain, heart, stomach, lungs, kidneys :) Kaya hangga't nasa ganong age dapat turo lang talaga ng turo kasi ang dali nila ma-absorb.
