I stand corrected. As I've said tips and techniques tinuturo sa kumon, yung hand abacus is not a trick, it's a counting technique. Kung titignan nyo yung hand abacus parang nakakalito, actually what Kumon is doing, ini-enhance nila yung mental calculation and skills ng students. If your kid is naturally gifted sa Math, I don't think na kelangan pa nya ng Kumon, pero kung talagang hirap ang bata, you can give it a try.

Taught my preschooler how to set the table, kumpleto kubyertos, table napkins, glasses, and bottle of water. She loves the new responsibility. Ayaw pa ng kinakausap sya while doing it dahil she's concentrating daw.

i just bought her melissa and doug wooden abacus and im teaching her simple addition pa lang nakakatuwa kasi she listens attentively. one time i saw her forming letters using the beads! iba na talaga ang imagination ng mga kids. she's also amazed with the colors. maya't maya she's doing her counting, nakakatuwa lang seeing her having fun while learning  :)

subscribing...my son just turned 2 years old...medyo nauubusan na ako ng ideas on what to teach him..he learned the alphabet and numbers  1 to 15 even before he turned 2 (can identify letters and numbers even in random order), shapes, colors, body parts, animals, animal sounds etc...nagstart na din ako introduce ang phonetics..sometimes we play the alphabet game, and he can actually give words that start with the letters of the alphabet, from a to z..fully conversant na din sya, so we're planning to send him to school (playgroup muna) next year.......although natutuwa naman si hubby, pero minsan kontra sya, like when i was teaching him the numbers 11 to 15...sabi nya too early daw baka malito lang (ganun ba yun?)..eh makulit ako so continue pa din hehe so ngayon alam na nya...now, nagstart na ako turuan sya ng spelling using the ipad app, no pressure naman, in fact he even enjoys it, pag ayaw di ko naman pinipilit....minsan napapaisip din ako kung appropriate na ba for his age yung mga tinuturo ko, kasi nga minsan si hubby kumokontra...sa akin kasi sayang naman na di ko sya turuan at this stage na parang ang bilis nyang matuto :-\

^ Okay yan sis.. Continue mo lang ang pagtuturo sa kaniya hangga't nasa focus siya.. Ang galing naman ng baby mo. Fast learner siya and willing talaga siya matuto.. Okay din ang way of teaching mo sa kaniya.. Ako kasi 9 year old na ang anak ko.. Medyo nagiging playful na kaya sa school niya walang focus sa pag-aaral at excited na makapaglaro kaagad instead na mag-aral.. ^_^

babies, infants to toddlers really have absorbent minds. i started reading to my daughter when she was 4 months old, everyday (yeah everyday!). now she's just turned 2, and she can read short sentences. she even can read words that are new to her (like tagalog words, even if i didn't teach her tagalog). at 2 she's pretty conversant, very clear magsalita, maybe because she has acquired vast amount of words from reading to her since she was a baby. her favorite game is opposite word game where I'll mention a word and she will say the opposite of that word. i really encourage reading to babies REGULARLY AND CONSISTENTLY. Point the words with your finger and show it to them and read aloud. they will surprise you, as my daughter did mine. :)

My daughter can read sight words but I want to teach her how to read talaga. How? Tinuturuan ko sya ngayon yung basic syllables.. Mahilig sya sa books talaga and she wants na to be able to read on her own.. Parang nagiguilty tuloy ako na diko sya natuturuan pa.

hi @nuna, i can only speak from my experience. i also started with sight words, those that my daughter can easily relate with, i make it fun and interesting. when she was able to familiarize with the words, i moved on to DOLCH sight words (this is a list of most frequently used words which u can download for free). tapos i moved on to double words, then phrases, then short sentences. the pattern by which i show the words is through phonics - example, bat, cat, mat, sat.....dun natuto anak ko magbasa ng di pa nya naeecounter na words. but basically continuous reading talaga is the key :) keep doing what you do. :)

^mommies i am not sure if off topic ako. i just have a dilemna when it comes to teaching my daughter, sobrang ikli ng patience niya at attention span. I know she understand me, pero pag ayaw na niya wala na akong magawa.

Marami kasi sa ating parents or other traditional schools, ang pagtuturo ginagawa by memorization, not by letting children understand the concept first. Sa numbers, for example, tinuturuan ang bata to count from 1 to 10, pero hindi pa nila ma-grasp what those words (one to ten) symbolize. I'm guessing yung pagtuturo ng "more than-less than" is done by using groups of things. For example, a group of blocks--pile A is higher than pile B (even without knowing the exact number of blocks), then you can tell pile A is more than pile B. Or 2 glasses of water--one is full and the other is half full--you know which is more by looking at the volume. The height or volume of objects are represented by numbers--then you can effectively teach children the numbers 1 to 10, that they are not just a bunch of words.

To add,  sa ibang schools they teach ABCs differently, hindi rin sunud-sunod--some teach letters by their sound. Iba-iba kasi ang methods of teaching ngayon, hindi tulad ng dati na halos pare-pareho kasi mostly traditional. If you are confused with the curriculum, I'd suggest setting up a meeting with the teacher so you can discuss, and get suggestions how you can supplement the school lessons at home.

this is a nice topic. my son is advanced sa age nya when he entered nursery at 3 yo. but i started having problems pagakyat nya ng kinder...and of course na carry over nung nursery. he started speaking more tagalog and nahirapan siya sa memorization. like what sis DV said many schools memorization ang ginagawa. maikli ang attn span nya kaya hirap magmemorize..and ang mahirap students who cant memorize are often branded na mahina sa school :(

super big help yung sinabi mo sis DV. yung school ng son ko may tutorial center and they want him to enroll sa tutorial. sabi ko...and for what? para magkabisado and ulitin ang lessons sa school? i wasnt satisfied. good thing galileo here n our area held a sample lesson and nagustuhan ng son ko. alphabet mastery pa lang sya pero so far mabilis ang progress nya unlike the past months na walang nagawa ang teachers nya sa regular school. i also started learning new approaches to teach him bec of galileo...backread din muna ko for your tips. thanks everyone!

Same with the school of my 4 year old son, math lessons nila is about less than and greater than, equal, not equal. He can count 1-20 but is confused with numbers higher than 20. Science class naman is about parts of animals, flowers, trees, and most of it are scientific name pa. Ganito na ba talaga ngayon?  :)
By the way, progressive school ng son ko, so I guess, its their way of teaching. I'm happy naman that my son gets high scores for his exams.  :)

^sis DV she's enrolled in a traditional school wrong move talaga sakin at yun pa ang napili ko i've found out na yung isang school na pinagpipilian ko ay progressive pala. isang katutak na assignments din ang ginagawa namin everyday to the point na ako nalang at asawa ko ang gumagawa dahil ayaw ng daughter ko paulit ulit. yung exams ng daughter ko okay naman, she does not like to review. may times pa nga na hindi siya nag exam at pinag special exam nalang siya.

based on my observation, iba ang style of teaching nila, sinabihan pa yung yaya ng daughter ko to le me know na may kid does not know how to count. how can they assess my kid na hindi marunong magbilang kung nakaka perfect sa quizzes and seatworks nila. i will definitely transfer her next school year.

Hi!my daughter turned 3 this november. She is not yet schooling. Next year i will enroll her at chiang kai shek college as nursery.  :) right now i teach her at home. She knows the alphabet, letter sounds, counting from 1 to 40, shapes, colors, parts of the house, members of the family, etc. i have been trying to teach her to read pero parang she's not ready yet ot maybe mali approach ko. Hehe :) i want to teach her to write letters and numbers narin sana pero 1 and 0 palang nasusulat niya. I teach her to trace pero minsan  konti palang ayaw na niya. My mom said wag ko raw madaliin kasi baka hindi pa mashadong ready hands niya. I feel sad lang kasi my friend's daughter who is the same age with her knows how  to write her own name na. Maybe because her daughter already goes to school. ayaw ko naman pilitin daughter ko kasi baka next time sa school ayaw na niya.  :)

^ You can help your daughter refine her fine motor skills by doing activities like lacing beads, buttoning, using chopsticks and the like.

Iba iba ang pace ng mga kids.  I am guilty too of comparing my children to other kids.  But in the end, what matters is instilling in them a lifelong love for learning.   Five, ten, twenty years from now, it will not matter who was able to read first or who was able to write her name first.
