I'm teaching my son basic math through abacus. So ancient ways pa yan haha he likes it very much. It's so sad lang when we were looking for one di alam ng mga tao kung ano yun :-\. Modern na kasi ngayon lahat.

^ My sons have an abacus by Plan Toys. I also saw an abacus by Melissa & Doug.

We recently bought our daughter that Melissa and Doug abacus. It makes teaching math easier (and tidier) talaga. Before kasi, when I was teaching my daughter basic addition and subtraction, we made use of different pasta shapes, fruits, blocks, etc. She can add/subtract single digits using her fingers pero with the abacus, she could do bigger numbers na.

You only have to use dry-erase whiteboard markers para madaling mabura.

Nakakahilo kasi yung may amoy.

^lahat naman yata may amoy e. basta piliin mo lang yung non-toxic. we use the stabilo brand kasi it has pink and purple colors pero double the price. di naman masyadong maamoy unless ilapit mo talaga sa ilong.

Help naman mga sis! Dunno kung where ipost to but hoping somebody can help me. I have a 2.5 son currently enrolled in Pre nursery. We introduced him sa school last summer and towards the end of the summer class, his teacher would call our attention na nang pupush yung son ko. Usually, smaller kids. We talked to him, informed him that it's not nice to push, it hurts his friend. We also deprived him of his fave toys and tv show as a punishment. If a day goes na di cya nangpupush, we praise him and give his toys back. So we tried another way, pagdating sa house, we no longer ask him if he pushed a classmate or not but we concentrate on whether he listened to his teacher or he enjoyed his class but he would proudly tell us that he pushed a friend. We thought it was his way of papansin and we were thinking that this was a result of him being bullied by his bigger cousin. May cousin kasi siyang lagi siyang inaagawan nang toys or lagi siyang binubully when they're together. So as much as possible, di namin siya dinadala sa cousin niya.

Now, a week since school started, the pushing behavior started and until now, naescalate na. He would push anyone within his reach. I tried the reward system, punishment system, acknowledging good behavior, same pa din.

I think he should know or you may ask him what would he feel kung siya yung pinupush. Have patience lang sis. Ganun talaga maging parent. Good luck sis.

^^Naku mahirap nga yan sis. Have you tried na kausapin nyo sya together with his teacher? Tipong let him know na it's not good  for him to do that. Ask him why he does the pushing? But with the presence of the teacher (who represents person of authority) baka mas maging effective and makinig siya.

If ganun pa rin, try naman na teach him by example. Let another classmate do the pushing, ask him how it feels. But make sure na it's done with minimal audience lang. Ikaw, your son, the teacher and the other classmate.

Let's try these steps first, sis. Do let us know what happens next.

^sis only child lang ba siya? Naging problem ko din before sa son ko yan but at that time he was just being playful. Wala kasi siyang playmates sa bahay. It his lack of socialization that made him do those things. Early exposure to other kids makes them improve a lot on their socialization skills. When my son entered school kasi ok na siya. I bring him to playrooms sa mall para matuto siyang makipaglaro. Kasi if not di siya matututo makisalamuha sa ibang bata.

Thank you for the reply sisses! Yes, he's an only child pa lang and waaahhh so far no news for pushing na. We no longer ask him if he push a classmate or what kasi dati halos everyday since the pushing started we would ask him. If he would proudly announce na he pushed a classmate, we shrugged it off and instead asked him their activities in class or if he enjoyed his lessons and classmates. After a week, he would sometimes tell us na No Push mommy and so far parang wala nang reports from his teacher. We lessen the visit to the lola as well kasi andun si bully cousin. Hopefully magtuloy-tuloy na ang good behaviour.  ;)

^ Thanks sis SassyAngelOnTheGo for sharing this link. ^_^

@jhenpretty - Sis, kaya naman sa bahay i-reintroduce concept ng multiplication as well as memorization of facts. You can get creative, hindi kagaya sa Kumon na puro worksheets lang. Tipid ka pa :)

Preschool palang ba anak mo? I am using some strategies for my daughter that works. Pero hindi sya pang-preschool. I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post it. Hanapin ko nalang yung thread on math and I'll post the strategies there.

Actually kumon teach tips and techniques for Mathematics na hindi tinuturo usually sa school, but like what inkslinger said, pwede mo naman ituro sa kanila yun if you know where to get ideas.

Marami na kasi akong napagtanungan na moms with kids doing Kumon and they say wala daw tricks. Akala ko talaga tricks ang itinuturo for fact memorization. Ang style daw is daily practice with worksheet, tapos timed sya, and they will answer the same worksheet 6 times, and the kid won't move on if he doesn't meet the required time and hindi perfect yung answers. Yung isang mom, pinakita sa akin yung addition worksheets. By tables yung pagmemorize. No strategies, just pure rote memorization (which I think is not bad for kids with sharp memory recall).

I know may tricks din sila tinuturo, tawag nila dun ay hand abacus.
