Hi mommies! thanks for all the advice and the websites here, I'm learning a lot. My daughter just turned 3 and so far, she knows the alphabet, phonics and her numbers. She likes art the most, especially painting. She sings and dances a lot too. But what i'm really proud of is that she loves books! I didn't even have to try hard for her to like reading with me. Both my husband and I love to read. I always read on my kindle and my daughter sees. I think that's the best way to encourage your child to read; to teach by example.

^ my kid also is now reading some CVC's sa kakanood at kakakanta ng abc in phonetics. he loves books also. it is amazing that he learned it this early... boys pa naman kids natin di ba?

hindi ko rin sya minadali. basta i exposed him to the materials we have been using here. he also loves playing with the scissors and for some reason, he looks at the activities we list here as play. enjoy na enjoy to sing abc - kahit anong version pa, may phonetics or wala.

@hunny_ally:my kids are having a hard time in school with regards to the Filipino.  My advice, have the house help converse with them in Tagalog while you and hubby can talk to your kids in english.  You'll be surprised how kids learn!

My son never yet learned how to speak in Filipino.  I will have to ask yaya to talk to him in tagalog, like what you sai sis domestic_diva.

Yan ang struggle ko ngayon... he just turned 7 and barok tagalog talaga. Tama, sis Tigerlily wag lang ganun.  But, my son pag nagtatagalog... ganun ang accent. Super chaka! haha! Has anybody encountered this? What would be other options for him to really learn tagalog too at his age.

Sis Marose, yan din ang dilemma ko. Values or Early Learning Set - then si walter pa! Sa price nun lahat ng yun, iPads na tig-isa na sa 3 chikitings ko e... kaya I am majorly torn with that pa.  What would you go for?

^ Tagalog story books kaya? Kasi di ba english story books natututo sila ng english vocabulary. Kaya lang I bought several tagalog books pero iisa lang ang gusto nya basahin. yung may car lang. tapos yung iba sa mga nabili ko pa e nagtataglish e. gumagamit ng titser imbis na guro. i think adarna books lang yata ang pinaka straight tagalog. tama ba ko sis mec? naiinis tuloy ako dun sa iba kong mga nabili. although bi-lingual sila, taglish yung tagalog at yung english parang tagalog na straight-ni-english. basta alam mo na pinoy ang nagtranslate. parang ganun.

^ I really like the Values set, but the agent said mas sulit ang Early Learning set.  Yung Walter, puwede pa naman maka-wait kasi mas bagay kapag nasa grade 1 na ang kids ko.

Re Tagalog, try reading Adarna books to your son and asking questions about the stories you read in Tagalog.  He must also answer in Tagalog.  Parang may Tagalog time or Filipino time kayo.

my daughter was trying to recite the alphabets on the poster inside the bus. tapos she tried to read by phonetics until she was able to read the words by herself, get / pass.

she tried the rest of the words pero sumakit na ulo nya. LOL. sabi ko enough na yun. she can do more next time. happy naman ako.

i dono how she did it because i am not religiously teaching her this things naman. next year pa balak ko mag start teaching her to read.

Sis Pinkpotato, good sign yun that she's starting to show readiness in reading.

Sharing din to you all, as you know... hindi lahat ng kids can read at 4 or 5. Some reads late or reads lower than their grade level.  There's something I got na curriculum in reading - and it's free.  It's Stairway to Reading.  I'll say this is the only curriculum that helped my struggling reader who's now 7. You can practice this for 20 minutes/day...

It has really helped my struggling reader (naiiyak nga ako, at natuto na siya mag read.  Pati silent e, with comprehension pa) and pwedeng i-try to even to pre-schooler till higher grade level. I bought so many reading curriculum and tried some (Hooked on Phonics, ClickNKids, E-nopi, Kumon, even Earobics).  Eto talaga ang nag appeal samin.. so this might help you too.

Everything is downloadable, including the games, flashcards, reading materials.

my 2.2 yrs old daughter sings the alphabet and can count 1-10. memorized lang. if we ask her to count an object, kahit 1 o 2 pcs lang yan, ang bilang nya 1-10 pa rin. . with letters, M and O pa lang ang alam nya. the rest of the alphaber, tsamba pa. minsan tama, pero pag tinanong ulit, mali na ang sagot. also with double letter words, like "MEET", sa first E, tama sagot nya pero sa next E ibang letter na ang sinabi nya.

sa ngayon, the book about actions ang read namin. lito pa rin sya sa ibang pictures. pag nakita nya, nakapikit ang eyes, "sleep" yun para sa kanya. basta naman may hawak na knife ang nasa picture, "cook" naman lahat kahit pa cutting or peeling talaga ang ginagawa. basta naman may illustration na parang luha o tilamsik from the face, sabihin nya "iyak, cry", kahit ang pics e runner na sweaty. yung sweat kala nya tears pa rin. naaliw lang ako sa isang pics. actual is RUNNING. sa picture kasi the boy is running kasi umuulan na. so i asked baby what the boy is doing,  sagot nya "ligo" haha. kasi meron nga namang raindrops.

pag sa mga ganung illustrations/pictures, paano kaya maidentify properly? like meron drawing ng " FULL MOON", i asked her to identify, sabi nya "CIRCLE". hindi ko naman makontra kasi tama rin nga naman na circle yung tinuturo ko sa kanya kasi full moon nga. meron naman sa likod ng book, flags from different country, pag turo ko sa Panama flag, sabi ko this is the flag of Panama, tingin sya sakin, turo sa flag sabay sabi ng bulol na "rectangle?". aww napa-oo na lang ako kasi rectangle shape nga yung flag.

^ ok lang yan mali-mali. just keep on repeating. yun sa moon na sinasabi nyang circle. you can say, "yes, that's right! the moon is shaped like a circle!" with emphasis on the moon. may ibang bata pa nga na ang tawag sa moon e ball. hehe! ok lang yan.

yun anak ko naman, kasi gumawa kami ng cave para sa thomas the trains nya. so ni-color namin ng black para mas maganda ang effect. so ang tahi-tahimik namin while coloring. bigla ba naman kumanta ng "do you know these letter sounds?" aaaak! parang mary poppins! hahaha! ayun, sinabayan ko na lang sya. hehe!

babymom... why not play to your child's interest, which seems to be shapes? instead of teaching her about flags, teach her which things are shaped rectangle, circle etc... at least din she can progress from 'round' to 'round moon' 

it will also practice her observation/perception skills kasi you can turn it into a game...which things around the house are rectangle?

let her lead you as to what she sees/is interested in....

(my son at that age didn't care for shapes at all, he cared for colors, dinosaurs and musical instruments...so I let him master those)

my daughter took her entrance exams yesterday in an all-girls school. after the test the teacher/examiner told me that she did well BUT needs improvement with her writing. sabi ko na nga ba eh! she's currently in nursery and she took the test for the next level for 2012-2013 school year. pag-uwi tuloy i looked at her worksheet from school and though it may not be perfect block writing and perfect letter spacing, she knows how to write the letters. she has to work on the strokes too. even with numbers it's the same (though she can write numbers already from 1-150).

im thinking tuloy is it because her current school is not giving too much emphasis on writing? i dont know if it has something to do with the progressive style of teaching. i already brought this up with her current teacher before and she assured me my daughter is doing well in that department, in fact better than her classmates.

or is the school's standard really high? i wonder tuloy paano yung writing ng mga nursery students in this school. kasi come to think of it nursery is supposed to be the first school, right? we are only in the december. they couldn't have perfected their writing in just 6 mos considering most of them are just starting to write. my husband said maybe it's just a constructive criticism and i shouldnt get all defensive about it. anyway whats important is my daughter is moving to the next level of the application process.

how about you mommies? how's your kid's writing at this age?

^Ally, my kids also have poor penmanship but that is okay with me.  This, despite the occupational therapy sessions pa ha.  I don't expect four year-old boys to master the art of writing straight lines, perfect curves and beautiful strokes in a few months.

As I recall, I only started having really good penmanship at par with the style of cursive writing in the girls' school where I came from around grade 4.

The thing with traditional schools kasi, masyadong result-oriented.  Non-traditional schools place more emphasis (and I tend to agree with them) on the process, not just the result.
