^ Sa Hobbes and Landes Shangrila only (sa ibang branches, pulled out na ang M & D toys), Dash and Toys R Us.  Around Php1200 yata yun, if I am not mistaken.

Pero mas mura kung sa Amazon ka mag-o-order, if may kilala kang uuwi from US, pa-ship mo na lang sa bahay nila.

hi mommies...

can u give me pointers how to teach my son identifying the alphabet pati na rin numbers? kase pansin ko sakanya parang hirap sya mag identify kahit na ulit ulit ko sakanya pagbinalikan nalilito at nawawala nanaman sya...haaay.. :( he's 4 btw. I know its bad pero minsan sa sarili ko nacocompare ko sya sa kuya nya na 5 years old na madali magpick-up....ayoko rin mag compare pero nahihirapan ako magturo....please help me....

Ang early introduction ko naman dati ng alphabet sa anak ko, before she was born, I bought those felt letters from Simple Joys (craft store in SM Annex), those that spelled out her name. Then kahit nung infant pa lang sya, every day, after her bath, I used to pick her up, point to and say each letter, and then say her name afterwards.

Tapos naman nung toddler na sya, I bought those EVA foam mats na may letter and number cut outs tapos nilagay ko sa sahig ng play room. We would play find-the-letter. I'd ask, "Find the letter A." Then she needed to lool for it and stand on the letter pag nahanap nya. Sometimes naman, I pulled out the letter cut outs tapos sya ang mag-fit dun sa hole, parang puzzle.

Nung acquainted na sya sa lahat ng letters, we bought her a Leap Frog Word Whammer (phased out na ito but they have a new version called Magnetic Word Builder) to introduce her to the sounds of each letter and read 3-letter words.

I have a friend na yung anak nya, the way she was taught the alphabet in school was through phonics agad, like the letter A is AAH, etc. Mas mabilis raw natututong magbasa than turuan ng alphabet ABC style. E nung sinabi nya sa akin yun, by then memorized na ng anak ko yung alphabet the old school way; baka gusto mon subukan yung ganung method.

Sa numbers, I taught her counting first before introducing the symbols. We counted everything: stair steps, pasta, cups, toys, etc. Nung alam na nya yung quantity ng numbers, then I introduced the symbols. I used the foam mats, the clock, numbers inside and outside the house.

Caveat lang: Ito palang style ko hindi ako nag-research or whatever ha (wala akong educ background), so hindi ko masabi kung effective for most kids. Nag-isip lang ako ng ways how to incorporate learning into our daily routine.

^sis DV and marose17, thanks so much sa advices...:) dami ko natutunan...siguro ang need ko na lang mahabang pasensya hehe....

I hope I can be able to do that also. Im trying, kulang lang sa creativity and yun nga tiyaga! Two thumbs up kayong mga mommy na ganyan! :)

^ sis, wala rin akong katyaga-tyaga. ayoko ng nagtuturo. at higit sa lahat maikli ang pasensya ko. pero when it came to my son, ang saya saya ko tuwing may matututunan sya. as a mom, proud ako everytime may natututunan syang bago - lalong lalo na kapag ako ang nagturo nun - syempre! from there humaba ang patience ko at mas matyaga na ako. pero palagay ko kulang pa rin ang tyaga at pasensya ko.

@1choi_ko9, I suggest nga you start with phonetics (letter sounds) rather than sight identification of letters if you want your child to read.

And hindi ako matiyagang magturo.  Pinasok ko lang nang maaga sa preschool ang mga anak ko - they were a few weeks shy of 3 years old when they went.  Last year, relaxed pa ko.  Hindi ako consciously nagtuturo ng alphabet, though I read to them daily.  Kaya lang this year, nakita kong medyo nauunahan sila ng classmates sa reading and writing kaya I devised supplement activities for them sa house.

Above all, I want to instill in them the love for learning and for me, nakuha nila ito through early exposure to books.  That's why it is easy to introduce to them activities where they could learn.

Free play is also very important to toddlers and preschoolers so they need balance ha.  It is important to let them play freely after dedicating time to "learning."

to those looking for Melissa and Doug products, you can check it directly sa Clevercats. They are the one who supplies stores like Dash and Hobbes and Landes. Not as cheap though as amazon.

Ang technique ko naman in teaching my daughter is to introduce things or new concepts to her through play or while doing our daily activities. Para syang guest sa isang foreign country and I'm the tour guide. Punta kami ng grocery, we count tomatoes, describe the colors and shapes of the fruits. Pag nasa daan I point out the colors and meaning of the traffic lights, and the different modes of transportation. I introduce different cultures through food. It requires a lot of patience and energy, and slowing down your own pace. I think kasi mas madaling matandaan ng bata pag na-experience nya at alam nya yung application.

Ang cuuuuttte!!! Thanks for sharing. I found a lot of youtube videos na may nursery songs na itinuturo ko sa anak ko. my auntie was surprised that my kid knew one of the songs na kinakanta sa class ng apo nya. kaya proud ako. hehe! actually, naituro ko na sa kanya ang bahay kubo at ako ay may lobo. sana magkaron ng madami pang resources on tagalog books and songs. kasi medyo dito ako nahihirapan maghanap.

@lilsaintsm0m - That's the song that helped my daughter learn all of her letter sounds :) (We listened to Barbara Milne's original version of the song.)

No flashcards needed. I used finger spelling in tandem with this letter sound song. She liked it better if I sang it to her instead ;D I can say that this song jump-started my daughter's path to fluent reading.

I've been reading this thread since last night! Thanks for the tips and kuddos to the moms na sobrang patient sa mga anak nila. :)

Sana makuha ko rin yung patience ninyo.

Bata pa lang ako alam kong hindi ako pwedeng maging teacher pero of course, for the sake of my son kailangan mag-adjust ako.

Binibili or download lang?

This is nice, sis!  I use this with my toddler twins since months old.  Naka save na yung video on my cellphone para kahit nasa car kami pampakalma nila. hehe..

When you hear it akala mo nakakaantok but Barbara Milne's voice is soothing for kids.

We do 1 letter for 2 weeks with the twins. now.  They're 21 months and know by heart yung names nila.

I start the letters with something they can be familiar with.

They know letter A, C, Circle, Heart.  Yan muna, no pressure. haha!

ohmygosh... it's been a while since i visited this thread, andami ko na-miss, and I am a little ashamed at how little I do with my child in comparison to some :D haha

in my defense, I have been embracing the Steiner/Waldorf way ever since my son was enrolled in a Waldorf play school. So, hindi ko pa kinakarir yung worksheets and the like... but we have this thick dinosaur activity book and that helps my son learn how to color better, trace/draw lines (by following numbers, or connecting same pictures), etc

at their school naman, where they're mostly taught daily activities... learning to count (without the symbols) happens when they are asked to 'chop the fruit into five pieces' or 'fold the table runner 2 times'

they are told stories with puppets/dolls and sing a lot of songs and recite a lot of rhymes, which they in turn memorize (you know kids this age are like sponges)

when I read din, i sometimes figure out a way to translate the storybook into a puppet show (no need for high end puppets, i once just cut up 'bird' shapes, drew bills on them, and recited the Very Thirsty Sparrow using those, and water in a medicine cup)... they really remember stories better when it becomes tangible and physical (we use play dough naman to make animals for other stories... unfortunately, my son has even mastered making angry birds using play dough, with his lego bricks as forts)

i have started signing the alphabet again and making him fingerspell simple words (coz he needs improvement with his fine motor skills) as I sound off the letters... but nothing formal pa nga (kasi although my son is 4 years old na, I like to think I still have the option of embracing Waldorf homeschooling with him, and they teach reading at age 7)

I am focusing now on delegating tasks (like bathing himself, brushing himself) and fostering independence, discipline, etc so that when we start with a more structured homeschooling, the discipline is there na and our daily routine can accommodate things na...

struggle lang kasi i also have an 11 month old who affects our day in so many different ways... mabagal ako mag-adjust :D naloloka pati ako kasi there are activities I can be doing with the 4 year old but may pose risks for the 11 month old (who insists in being attached to me)... like playing with dough... or even coloring :D  eh pati books, they fight over na (yes, my 11 month old initiates competition over everything)

but I am happy to backread soooo many pages... very inspiring, illuminating and empowering!

TIA :)
