What's CVC?

Wow, daming recommendations pala ng reading materials dito. When I started teaching my daughter how to read, medyo unstructured lang ang method. After learning her ABCs, I taught her the sound of each letter (phonics) with the help of her Word Whammer. Ngayon we just practice by reading her books. I read the longer words tapos pag may easy 3-4 letter words, I let her read them. Tonight I started introducing the sound of S and H when put together. I told her, "when you put S & H together, the sound is shh." Same with N & G. Then she read the words PUSH and SWING. Simple lang reading method namin. It'd be nice to put some structure to it, kaya lang feeling ko mabo-bore kaming pareho. After reading her books, we'd each have our own to read separately before sleeping. Relaxed lang.

CVC is Consonant - Vowel -Consonant.  That is the basic element to teach the English language,sis. Ex. Mat, Sat, Cat. Di ko din dati alam yan e, except nung nag homeschool na ako to my kids.

There is also a free lesson plan online that I have successfully used for reading lessons - Stairway To Reading.  All the materials are for free online and you will just to teach your child everyday for 30 days at 30 minutes a day.  All the materials, flash cards are on PDF and it's free. ^A, yun pala ang tawag dun. My daughter can read CVC na and CCVC (hehe, pauso). Tonight she learned SH and NG sounds. May tawag rin ba dun? Thanks for the lesson plan link.

It's easy to teach three, four or five-letter words to a child.  Most children can memorize the letters in the word.  The only problem with that method is that the child do not understand the rules in phonics.  If you follow the rules in phonics, the child would independently know how to decode a word (if he sees a written word, he would be able to pronounce it correctly.if the word is spoken, he would be able to spell and write it correctly).  That's the real advantage of teaching phonics to a child.

Now that my children are learning phonetics in school, I supplement their learning by playing a "spelling" game using Melissa & Doug's see and spell toy.

I wish though that I could be as hands-on as some of the moms here.  But I work full-time and can only do these things on weekends. 

With my children, mas challenging for them to practice writing.  They love to read eh.  Their writing skills have to be polished pa.  That's why I'm sending them to OT naman for this reason.

With my daughter, akala ko dati she was just sight reading since we were reading from her books (although she already knew her basic phonics) but when she sees words around her, like when we're out, she points and sounds each letter and actually reads the word so I know she's not sight reading. She can also spell some CVCs (ayan, nagamit ko na yung term  )--sometimes she opens a blank Word document on my laptop and types them--so applied yung natutunan nyang basic phonics. I think once they learn that it becomes easier to read.

I taught her basic phonics just by singing the ABCs phonetically with the help of her Word Whammer (may option yung toy na phonetic ABCs tapos sinasabayan namin). Yun lang, we didn't use videos or flash cards.

^ thanks sa info sis!  sis, for the 12 mini books, gaano kalaki yung isang book? i am thinking if pwede ako magpa-order sa tita or cousin ko na nasa US, tapos padala na lang nila dito kapag may luluwas. baka mas maging mahal kasi kapag from amazon orderin tapos dito sa manila diretso i-deliver.

i am not vey knowledgable about shipping fees ng amazon. whatever you're comfortable doing.  maliit lang yung libro. and few pages lang din. every book is progressing. humihirap kumbaga.

4x6in yata yungbook. tapos 4pages lang yung 'story part' nya. tapos it is 'handwritten' para hindi daw nakakalito sa mga bata.

hi sis! would you know if may local store or online store here in the philippines that sells these BOB books. i went to their website, and found the info about these books interesting. sana lang may local dealers nung ganitong books.

Eric Carle books are also nice too. Ex. The Hungry Caterpillar. It has finger puppet with stories.  It's available at Powerbooks.

ayaw ko man, i don't have the teacher skills. kaya i allowed my kid to learn to use the laptop and be on starfall.com. he does phonetics now. and nagsa-sign pa ng letters!!! 

nagulat ako! hindi ko marerealize na nagsasign sya kung di ako marunong ng konti. nakalabas na rin ako ng bahay sa wakas so i got to buy him a new lap table, watercolors and colored pentels. ayun 1 day lang ubos na ang water colors. dapat yata yung chipanggang watercolor na lang binili ko.

Haha! I can relate, sis... Twins pa anak ko and ganyan din ang scenario namin.  Ilan beses na ako bumili ng 64 pcs crayons, ewan koba kung bakit nawawala.  Dati Prang pa pinagamit kong watercolor... ngayon mga chipangga nalang kahit anlabo ng color. haha!

I bought him scissors too. and now i've got my very own economical paper shredder. tipid sa kuryente! plus we've got a steady supply of confetti. i think meron pa ngayon sa hair ko. ok lang sa kalat. madali lang naman walisin. basta busy sya. and there's also this study na nabasa ko lately na nakakatulong daw ang scissor skills sa pagsusulat. i just bought the regular scissors. akala ko nga magsisisi ako na hindi ko binili yung may springs e. pero in just 1 hour, controlled nya na agad yung scissors.

To add to my earlier list:
On clear nights (not lately, though), we go moon- and star-gazing.

My daughter loves cutting too! Project namin ngayon alphabet book. Per week, I draw a block letter on a sheet of colored paper, then she cuts around it, pastes it on another sheet of paper, then decorates it. She also looks for an object that starts with that letter from her sticker collection and places it on the paper. I compile these letters in a clear book. We are now on letter C. What amazed me today and melted my heart was that while I wasn't looking, she took a blue marker and wrote MOM on it! Now, I haven't taught her how to write yet; she just scribbles with pens and crayons, freestyle lang lahat. She said the letter C was for me (because the letter A was for her dad).

Phonetics is really challenging to teach. I had my experience with my son but when he entered school in just 2 1/2 weeks nagread na siya. We were amazed.

my daughter is 3 years old. she can identify the alphabets, numbers from 1-20, colors, shapes, and crazy about puzzles.

she identifies few words, familiar kaya as if she knows how to read like.

she's good with alphabets/phonics, when she tells you the letter from a flash card, she gives the sound and some words that starts with it. she writes some letters, especially her name and write some numbers

she colors well too. medyo concern sya pag lumalampas.

i want to read books to my daughter sana. kaya lang nag aaway kami kasi few pages pa lang ako aagawin nya then she'll make up her own story. di ko natatapos moment ko.

^ Haps, ang galing ni H!   Sina M & M hindi pa magaling mag-color.  Very challenging ito sa akin.

Mommies, I am quite sad kasi nababagalan ako sa progress ng kids ko sa school.  Yung ibang ka-age nila could read and spell three and four letter words!  Nate-tense ako, and at the same time, hindi ko alam kung paano i-balance ang kagustuhan kong mag-develop sila to their full potential while not pressuring them.

Ang hirap maging working mom kasi hindi ko matutukan ang mga anak ko.  Do you think hiring a tutor at this point (my sons are only 4 years old) is too OA?

By the way, walang pressure sa school nila, maski sa teachers mismo ha kasi wala naman grades sa school nila.  Ako lang talaga as a mom ang nape-pressure kasi gusto ko naturally na at par ang skills ng mga anak ko sa peers nila.

^ & ^^sama ninyo si S. Hirap din sa coloring. And ang penmanship!!! Frustration ko. But her teacher said it is at par naman daw, if not better than her classmates.


marose, last year merong affliated na Reading school program who did free assessment for S and her classmates. I wanted to enroll but hubby was against it. Too much too soon daw for a 3 year old. The name of the school is The Learning Library. Most teachers were UP Early Childhood development graduates. I can give you the number if you're interested.

With S they're only starting to read and spell 3 letter word (mostly CVCs). But even before that I already started coaching her. In the house what i do is make it into a game. Usually when Im cooking I let her fetch her magnetic letters from the ref and spell out words. But in your case harder nga since working mom tapos times 2.

Marose, okay lang yan. samen, i never pressured hershey! waaah. such a liar! haha. well, di naman masyado. basta! haha.

yung coloring, i think the apps sa iPad nakatulong din. walang coloring activity yata sa school as far as i know yun ang chismis ni hershey. parang everytime lang na nagcocolor sya at home, sasabihin ko na dapat di yan lumalampas, ganyan. she has this ugali na pag sinasabihan mo, once pwede pa pero if you keep on reminding her, lalo nyang mamaliin. so minsan pag naiinis na ako at lumalampas pa din sasabihin ko, ampanget ng gawa mo! LOL. tapos itatapon nya na lang.

agree ako, hirap ng working mom and i partly blame FB! nakakainis!

wala ding pressure sa school nila H. the teachers just told me na ganito ginagawa namin monday, tues, etc. pero there's this pre school in bacolod, i saw my friend's post ng test papers ng anak nya, i copied it [without her permission, sorry friend baka naglulurke ka] and gave to hershey and belib ako ha, di naman sa pag aano, she did really well. im not sure how did the teacher do the exams to them but what i did with H is just explain lang what to do and guide her but never gave her the answer.
