sis, my 18 month old baby is also g6pd deficient. did you try going to UP manila for a test confirmation? meron sila don, they also have seminars for parents with G6PD deficient baby. I promise you, you'll have a better understanding on the deficiency.

G6PD deficient babies needs to avoid all soy based food like soy sauce, taho, monggo especially FAVA beans(they said wala daw dito sa phil. un pero a friend of mine warned me na meron sa marketmarket grocery).
bawal din anything mentholated like eficascent..super bawal ang moth balls.

if you need a list on meds and foods that is harmfull for G6PD deficient babies please PM me your email ad. i have a list given in the UP seminar.

reminder: always tell your pedia or any other doctor that your child is G6PD deficient marami kasing gamot na bawal. better if you keep the list inside your baby book. there was an incident na nasa e.r. kame ng baby ko and the e.r. doctor asked me if i have the list kase hindi nya daw kabisado. so lesson learned yun on my part.

hope this helps.

hi sis euqhin, pareho tayo, ganun din ang baby ko and i was advised to go sa UP Manila for confirmation.

thank you mga sis, actually galing na kami ng UP and already have the result, positive! but then, i tried to consult a doctor though am not sure kung pedia nga ba siya. he told us na for life na raw yung sakit ni baby. i just wonder why the pic sa lab na nag newborn sa baby ko is saying na may mga ipapainum lang daw nma antibiotics kay baby, kaya gusto ko sana siya dalhin sa ibang pedia for a second opinion...well, is that true? for life na nga ba talaga sya and wala ng gamot? about sa seminar, am not aware of that. sa UP din po ba yun? mga sis enge naman po ng schedule ng seminar kung meron po kayo..enk u enk u

just saw this from my files. this is an excerpt from the UP seminar leaflet.

What is G6PD deficiency?
Glucose – 6 – Phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, or G6PD deficiency for short, is the most common enzyme deficiency worldwide. This is an inherited disorder which means that from the time a baby is born, there is already something wrong with how his body makes and breaks important substances. According to statistics, about 400 million people have G6PD deficiency, and it is most common in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Babies with G6PD deficiency have very little or no enzyme called Glucose – 6 – Phosphate dehydrogenase. An enzyme is a kind of protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the body. The enzyme G6PD is especially important to red blood cells. If this enzyme lacking or missing, red blood cells are easily destroyed.

Another name for G6PD deficiency is favism because some people who have it, usually those living in the Mediterranean region, react very badly after ingestion of fava beans.

What are the harmful effects of G6PD deficiency?
A baby with G6PD deficiency appears and remains healthy until he is exposed to a large amount of oxidative substances. When this happens, his red blood cells are destroyed, a process known as HEMOLYSIS.

Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body. When they undergo hemolysis, the baby will have hemolytic anemia. The signs and symptoms of hemolytic anemia are paleness, dizziness, headache, tea-colored urine, and abdominal or back pain or both. Hemolytic anemia, when very severe, can end in death. Destroyed red blood cells are brought  to the liver to be broken down to smaller pieces for disposal. One of the end products is bilirubin, a yellowish substance that accumulates in different parts of the body when too much is produced. Quite often, bilirubin accumulates in the skin and causes it to appear yellowish. In worst case, bilirubin accumulates in the brain and causes mental retardation or death.

As parent, what should I do to prevent  a hemolytic crisis?

Tell your child’s pediatrician that your child has G6PD deficiency. This is very important so that he will not prescribe oxidative drugs in case your child gets ill.

Keep your list of oxidative substances in a handy place. Better yet, post it in a convenient spot on the kitchen wall. Always double-check food, beverage and medicine labels against the list.

Memorize the signs and symptoms of hemolytic anemia. Bring your child to his pedia as soon as these signs and symptoms appear.

Do not ignore infections.

As your child gets older, honestly and gently tell him about his condition and teach him to be careful about what he eats.

i don't think there is any way that we could avoid it from happening cause its inherited from the parent.

do not worry that much. G6Pd is not a disease but a disorder. there are just few that you need to avoid. my baby was diagnosed G6pd positive but when we had her check at UP(i believed you went through this as well), it went negative, thank God! there are foods and medicine that your baby needs to avoid because if she will get expose to these, there will be irregularities in her body (especially with the blood). in UP, they provide a list of all the things that you need to avoid. as far as i can remember, A BIG NO NO TO "MOTH BALLS" even a skin contact is such a "no,no", and also fava beans.. you know the DING DONG chichirya?? your baby cant eat that. you should let your pedia be aware about this because there are a lot of medicines for fever & infections that your baby cant take. if exposure will occur, the worst case scenario is severe anemia.. yung point na my blood transfusion na. yun na yun.. as long as there will be no exposure, everything is going to be ok.  ;D

that's a good question sis..i have yet to bring my son for a dental checkup. i think we just need to tell the dentist that our kids have G6PD, better siguro if we bring the list para sure.
