^Ok lang yan sis. Basta bagalan mo lang muna and widen the distance. Honestly kase dito sa Pinas, minsan ikaw super ingat pero yung nasa paligid mo, hinde nag-iingat so you have to be double careful and double defensive :) You can do it :)

Slove: advantageous on your part that you get to have a nice new vehicle! Sa simula careful na lang, and pag di ka sure take it slow, kapag naiinis nasa likod mo hayaan mo mauna sila, kase pag na pressure ka sa kanila kakabahan ka lang, i'm also a newbie driver, since november pa ako kino coach ni hubby, unti unti transitionnamin, next is sa likod na sya umuupo. It was only last week that i get to start driving w/o him, takas pa ginawa ko haha sya kase yung di maka let go. Gawin mo nalang sis when you got your car, same route lang lagi, hanggang sa masanay ka na at wala nang kaba. :)

sis twelvth_goddess, thank you so much sa tips! tama ka sis. dapat ko nga rin matutunan yang defensive driving.  :)

sis mae_s, sana nga sis. di ko pa masimulan ang practice kasi wala pa naman sasakyan, by end of the month pa. at saka, buntis din ako ngayon. after ng lesson ko last year hindi na nakahands on ulit. medyo matagal na rin yun. sana tanda ko pa. nakaya ko na nun ang diri diritso. sa mga liko liko ako nagkakaproblema. mag driving lesson daw ako ulit sa april after I give birth. timing din na BIL will be coming home by then, papaturo na lang din ako sa kanya.  ;D

sis mai, thanks also sa iyong mga tips. advantage nga din yung husband nyo marunong mag drive, kasi at least hubby may tyaga magturo. ako kasi, sariling sikap talaga. may magtuturo, limited naman ang oras.
by the way, they made up their mind na na the 2nd hand mitsubishi fuzion na lang kunin. thanks God at napapayag namin si BIL, nakuha sa pangdidiscourage na kunyari may nabasa ako na reviews about montero & fortuner.. kesyo tagtag, eye-catchy sa mga carnappers, mahal, baka mabangga lang, etc. etc. ayun, tuwang tuwa ako at nakinig naman. buti nga yun, malaki din kasi matitipid nila. pasalamat dapat sila sa akin, hindi ako "sakay sa panahon." lol!

thankful din ako sa thread na ito, sa pagbabasa ng mga post, I was inspired and at the same time I'm gaining confidence kahit pakonti konti. tama nga naman, kung kaya ng iba, makakaya ko rin!  :D

I didn't need a brand new vehicle to overcome the fear of driving.

Gamit ko vintage vehicle - a 1973 volkswagen beetle. I've been driving that for more than 5 years. We had an older slower beetle rin noon (which we lost at an accident), at doon ako natutong magdrive.

Mag-isa ko lang nag-aalaga nito. I do not have a hubby to rely on. My father, who was previously driving this one, is unable to drive anymore because of his stroke. I have no male companion to help me with decisions and heavy car-related stuff or even trade driving chores.

I have to rely on a lot of decision-making, my almost-two-decades-old experience in driving, my five senses, my mechanic and occasionally, my gut feel. A observant neighbor, friend or stranger could be of help too, but not all the time.

While it's true na since it's an old vehicle, may mga major na sira, I'm still doing well with it because I learned how to "connect" with my car. If you see, hear, smell, and feel something different, then it's time to bring it to the mechanic. This is true whether you own a new vehicle or not.

I also follow a definite preventive maintenance schedule. Yung every week, every 3 months, every 6 months and every year. Doon nadedetect ang sira. Make sure that you also have some "favorite" mechanic/s to call.

In addition, hindi rin mahal ang maintenance and repair expenses nito unlike many 15 year old vehicles.

So, I'm trying to point out that there's NO NEED for a new vehicle to overcome such fear.

It will help a lot if you try to learn more than just driving that thing. Huwag puro drive lang nang drive. You need to learn how to take care of it. As simple as washing that thing (wag naman parati sa car wash so you can inspect that thing closely), down to topping-up the liquids (oil, radiator, brake fluid, etc.), to checking any inconsistencies sa takbo ng makina when idle, etc. Even checking tires yourself, without bringing it to the gas station (again it's forces  you to be alert sa condition ng tires mo). You do not need to learn how to repair though (I leave that to the mechanic), but you need to learn how to detect problems (use your five senses to "connect" to your car).

Those early detection of problems would mean a lot. That's why I recommend that you take care of your car in many simple ways - like what you do to your hair when it needs a parlor visit. Remember that the car is an "extension" of your self. It will be difficult to be comfortable with your car if you simply confine yourself to driving and leave the "dirty" stuff to the men. From experience, this was true to me - nakasandal ako sa tatay ko up to the time he suffered stroke and all that's left was that car and me.

Baka in time, matulad kayo sa akin na wala kayong male companion to rely on. It's pretty much diskarte na lang sa daan.

Of course, malaman di naman nating kayang mag-change tires, so you'll always need help. I recommend that you keep tools and a spare tire for it. You also need a working cellphone too, in case of emergencies and you get stuck.

^Hi sis, you serve as an inspiration for me. I'm planning to have an old vw beetle din kasi eh.

My co-worker who used to be a car dealer actually told me to never buy a brand new car especially if you are going to buy it via a car loan.

And it gets better when you drive everyday.  I've been driving for almost 2 months now and I can say na may improvements naman.  May kaba pa rin, but not like before na nanginginig talaga ako.  Sabi nga if you want to overcome your fear, you must face it...

Agree with Freelancer Babe. Nung hinde pa ko nagda-drive, I couldnt detect the any changes in the cars that we were using. I was just really a passenger. When I started driving, even the slightest sound, napapansin ko. Kung humina lamig ng ac, pansin kagad, tunog ng engine, or even yung ride and acceleration mismo.

Owning a car is not just making sure na malinis ang labas, maganda ang sounds or whatever. Apart from gas expenses, you need to spend on the maintenance talaga. And yes, it gets better everyday. The more you practice, the more you discover new things like how to maneuver your way out of tight traffic situations and other things.

Since I got my license last week, I planned to drive my car today going to Makati.  But I didn't get to do it because nabangga ko ang bumper ng kotse ko sa gate while pulling out of my driveway. To be fair sa akin, sobrang hirap mag-park sa garahe namin dahil patarik sya and sobrang sikip. Although I'm more pissed at myself kasi I've been practicing for over a month with no problem. Last year nakabangga ako ng jeep because di pa ako sanay sa pag-turn.  Ngayon naman nabangga ko yung gate namin because of reverse.  Nakakainis kasi sa sobrang papalit ko ng reverse at drive, nataranta ako at imbes na magbreak, I stepped on the accelerator.

Oh well this won't deter me from driving again. Naiinis lang ako sa sarili ko.

I had my driving lessons last year pero recently lang ako nakapagdrive mag-isa. Usually somebody would accompany pero mas taranta ako pag may kasama. The first time I drive alone, taytay-marikina, pag dating ko sa hospital I felt jittery. Pero yung mga sumunod na days, relax na :) For me, praying before driving ang secret to overcome the fear.

Don't get discouraged sis. Never pa naman ako nabangga outside or nakabangga (and I hope it will never happen) but twice na ko sumabit sa gate while I was backing out and when I was about to enter the garage. I felt really bad too and traumatized even but I still went on. Good thing the car I damaged was the practice car that my hubby bought for me and it was one of the cheaper models that we owned. Practice makes better sis :)

Pray bago istart ang engine :)
Concentrate, be alert

Thanks @twelvth_goddess! Yay!

Mas careful tayong female drivers when it comes to driving. Ito yung advantage natin over other guys.

Anyway masarap namang magdrive.

@ReservoirDogs, yan ang fighting spirit!

^Yes, mahal lang mag-maintain. And affected ako everytime na may oil price hike, naiinis ako sobra  >:(

Careful ako mag-drive but I'm quite hot-tempered, that's something I really need to work on. Naninigaw and nagbababa ako ng windows talaga, I know that's bad :( Pero ladies, sarap pa din na ipinagda-drive tayo diba? For the past 2 weeks kase hubby and I are sabay pumapasok so I let him drive. Pero pag pauwi and I know he's tired, I drive naman. Naiinis lang ako pag nagco-comment sya na I'm an offensive driver eh samantalang I got my skills and style from him :P

I don't think I am.

Thanks sis @twelvth_goddess and @freelancer_babe!

Yeah, i'm actually not discouraged. Yun nga lang, medyo bago pa yung kotse ko kaya I needed to have it repaired.  Nahati yung bumper ko into two, lol.  I just hate it pag nagpapalit ko yung accelarator and break, delikado kasi.  Matic na nga, nagkakamali pa, hehe.

After nabangga ko yung car, I had to bring it to the car shop. So no choice ako kundi magdrive ulit, hehe. I was able to drive successfully kahit na sister ko lang kasama ko na newbie driver din.  But buti na lang, we were able to get there alive.

Anyway, I'll drive again to Makati today.  I live in QC so I need to slog through EDSA.

Thanks for the link sis freelancer.  I actually follow some especially #3.
