I'm not a believer of Kumon, Enopi or other programs that use worksheets as a tool to teach abstract concepts (like math) to children. It might work with some kids, yes, pero pahirapan. Imagine, everyday the child has to do worksheets for 20-30 minutes. Kung may mali, uulit ulit. Mastery daw kasi. It's pure drilling: boring, tiring, and stressful.

Di nila alam, kahit sila lang ang magturo sa anak nila e mage-gets din ng mga bata ang same concepts, with mastery and retention, less the worksheets, tears, stress and boredom in quarter of a time they spent answering Kumon worksheets.

Mas naniniwala ako sa paggamit ng manipulatives to learn math concepts or phonics,  or reading aloud to gain reading fluency. Kasi eto yung mga hands-on activities that after we introduced the concept to our child, it will allow him to explore and understand concepts on his own.

May mga kapitbahay kami na nagstop ng Kumon after years of doing it.

Well, to each his own, ika nga nila. But for me, ibibili ko nalang ng craft materials or educational toys yung 1,800 na monthly tuition for a single Kumon subject (3,600 for both math and language).  ::)

^sis all you said is true lalo na sa math paulit-ulit nga daw. i enrolled my 3.5 year old daughter in kumon last march in reading. after 4 months i stop her kasi she can read na. and last june i enrolled her in kinder. kumon really helps her, mga classmate nya ngayon pa lang nagstart magread at sya marunong na, she can read the instruction on her own. nakakatuwa kasi di pa sya nursery nun.

sis kwinchester - nakakapagod nga yun. Buti you made a good decision kesa maapektuhan talaga esp na formative years.

I also agree with sis inkslinger, kaya kami crafts day talaga.  Andaming after school pero walang arts and crafts na after school.  Siguro mas matutuwa ang mga kids dun. :) Sa cost ng monthly nila and parang mada-download mo lang yung worksheets I don't seem to feel na worth it talaga.

Yung 6 year old ko assessed na ibalik sa sounds ng phonics per letter.  It's their way for mastery daw, but seeing the worksheets, kayang kaya naman gawin yun mag time ka lang sa anak mo per day.

Although, siguro nga if they start early and maybe just a few months, dapat stop na? Like sis nicegirl? baka mas ok pag ganun para hindi maburn out?

I like naman worksheets kasi gusto ng anak ko. Kaya nag aanswer kami ng 2 pages (around 10 items yan) every other day. Enopi naman sya hindi kumon. Every sat lang. Pag may iba kami activity, every other sat pa.

Then we eat out.

5 years old pa lang siya kasi and being a single parent, hindi ko na talaga magawang maglaan ng extra time everyday to teach her especially with Math. Much as I wanted to...

^If you will ask me sis, better buy a good math worksheets or program and have your child answer one worksheet a day.

I'm not sure if Kumon still has the 2 weeks free trial. I tried it with my 4 year old daughter last September. Not that I'm very excited about it; I just wanted to see how Kumon does it, and to get hold of the worksheets as well (nang espiya ba  :P)

What I learned was, all the hardwork will still come from us parents. Kumon students only go to the center either once a week @ 1 1/2 hours or twice a week @ 45mins each session. At the center, they will learn one concept and do worksheets there. They will take home one week's or half a week's worth of take home lessons (assignments in short) that they have to answer at home daily.

If your child is just 5, you still have to be with her answering the Kumon worksheets, EVERYDAY. You have to time her with a stopwatch and her answers should be correct. If not, she has to repeat that same worksheet for her to meet the minimum number of time required for each sheet and 100% accuracy. Checking of worksheets is done at the center.

The result of our free trial? We didn't even finish the free 2-week trial. My daughter attended one session only and wasn't able to complete the 1 week's worth of worksheet at home even though she was placed at a level down of what she can already do. The instructor said this is how they do initial leveling at Kumon; they place the student at a level that she has a mastery of (which is one notch down) for her to gain confidence in answering the worksheets.

Mind you, my daughter loves answering worksheets. She can read the instructions on her own and can work independently with the worksheets she is working on. When I'm resting, she'll get a book, browse on it and answer activities there on her own without bugging me. She'll get all her materials: pencil, crayons, glue, scissors and work on the task. But she was super bored with Kumon. She couldn't even keep her pencil up.

Siguro it's the repetition. Or the very loong worksheets to work on in a day, covering the same topic. Or maybe it's the lack of challenge, kasi nga a child is placed at a level lower of what she can do. In my daughter's case, I was initially told that since she hasn't attended any formal schooling yet, she will be placed at the lowest level because they usually place non-schooling preschool age child at the lowest level, which is working on number recognition and basic counting. But because in the assessment she can do addition with ease, she was placed not at the lowest level, but at a level where she has to count beginning from 1-50 and practice writing numerals. Yet, still, the task remained unappealing to her.

I know math is a combination of understanding of concepts and drill. If you don't drill, the child won't attain the "automaticity" needed in math, like answering 4 + 3 without counting. But there are many ways of drilling the child without her knowing that she is doing the drills, right? Like the strategies being employed by Singapore Math, Montessori Math and Math U See. Unfortunately, Kumon doesn't have these "creative" manipulatives that will keep a child's attention and do the math drills with gusto. It's just plain paper and pencil drilling.

So that's our experience with and my personal take of Kumon.

I agree with sis inkslinger, pero my kids are currently enrolled in kumon, math and english... In math, i can say na magaling lang talaga ang bata sa mga numbers. But in English, parang di din ako bilib, I wonder kung pano matututo ang bata sa pagbabasa through pictures.

I just want to share our experienced with Kumon. We enrolled our son when he was 2.5 yrs. old for reading class. At first he's very excited but after 5 months of doing all the worksheets grabe iniiyakan na niya kami whenever we pass by the center. He even fell asleep while doing his worksheet at the center. So we decided to stop. But there's really a big improvement in his skills. Before he turn 3 he can read most of his story books. For my son, 5months has been a fruitful days for him.

kumon, enopi and other child learning programs fit to certain kids profile only. it is not for everyone and everytime. thats why, trials are important. dont blame the program or your kid, they just dont match together... or timing is just bad.
the strength of kumon is math since thats their foundation. they are from japan... so what do you expect?

repetition is also a key learning technique for children. in fact, mastery of any skill is based on repetition. thats proven already by neuro science. thats no different from learning violin or guitar where repetition is key.

hi mga mommies! just want to share.... both enopi and kumon kase they use materials.. kumon mas familiar ako eh... they just give the materials to be answered by the kid for a certain time tapos ichecheck.. kung anong mahirap irereview.. drill and practice with pen and paper lang talaga..

eh math teacher ako and i had some training on how to teach math... especially to beginners dapat talaga manipulatives muna bago magabstract.. i suggest na you play with your kiddo in that way matuto sya mag math tapos kung nahihirapan sya sa school opt for a tutor nalang kase sa centers they don't to homeworks as in drills and practice lang sila till ma master.. ang concept nila eh "repetition leads to mastery" which is true naman pero ang concept ko kase eh "find your own way of solving math..

Enopi is now called eye level.

My 2 daughters both enrolled sa enopi (eye level) math subject. Paulit-ulit nga yung mga worksheets kasi for mastery, pero super galing na nila for basic math. And nakatulong din enopi nila para sa entrance exam nila for big school.
