sisses, Just want to share my experience with cordlife..
i went to cordlife yesterday and talked to my account rep, Ms Michelle Villamiel. Ganda sa UP ayala land techno hub. Bldg H located ang cordlife, nasa extreme back left side ng compound and mind u, pay parking pala ang buong lugar at 80 fixed rate. syempre, nagcomplain ako k ms michelle about that kasi ang mahal eh (kuripot ba? hehe). eh andun kami for the presentation of cordlife without commitment at ang lawak ng front parking sa bldg ng cordlife, magpapabayad pa.
so much for the parking fee issue (which was resolved free by michelle btw), she presented the benefits of stem cell using umbilical cord blood for banking. like what i said to my husband, this is an easy product to sell because there's nothing wrong with being insured with medical assurance such as this esp with the fast pacing progressive medical technology, who knows the next thing that the stem cell can do is to make a baby out of it etc :) even if it's kinda pricey, you'll make an effort to secure the future of your baby eh kaya ieeffort ko tlaga ko (goodbye pampering days) lalo na ako, i have an existing SLE illness kaya baka maipasa ko pa sa kanila ang disease ko, if not them, the next generation, at least may one chance of treatment for them na baka makatulong...no joke at twins pa ngayon ang magiging first babies ko..
so to make things short, we enrolled with a referral discount of 4k. here are the expenses:
For the annual payment (18 years to pay)
40,000 upfront fee (25000 nonrefundable if cord blood not suitable for storage)
4000 less referral fee
TOTAL 36000
8000 additional fee for the Sepax processing (machine operated)
TOTAL 44000
VAT 12% 5280
OVERALL TOTAL 49280 payable in 12months check :) starting day of signing for the 1st month then succeeding month on date of birth til the 12th month so around 4106.67 per month payment ako for the DP. (November 2010 then March 2011 until Janaury 2012)
annual payment will be 8000+ VAT =8960 paid on their birthday until they reach 18 years old.
TOTAL INVESTMENT UNTIL 18 = 210,560
option na namin or my baby na magcontinue at legal age.
DISAVANTAGE:
the stem cord cell is good only for one (1) use so if in the future, they will need again, wala na pag ginamit na sa either one of the member of the family.
if at an early age, 18 below, nagamit na ang stem cell, no need to pay until 18 kasi obviously, wala na nakabank na stem cell kaya tapos na rin ang contract with them kaya yung estimated 210k na yun, is pag very healthy naman ang lahat at walang gumamit...
pag naman gusto magcancel,/terminate ng contract after naibank na ang stem cell, di na ata marerefund yung mga binayad?pero yung remaining years, magiging for use na ng cordlife ang stem cell ng child mo, which is sayang naman...
meron din silang 10 yrs or 18 year plan prepaid na so kung kaya nyo rin ipay in 12month check/card ang 170k or 160k sa isang taon, well yun ang may refund pag in case earlier ang gamit nyo kasi nabayad nyo na until 18 years.discounted...kasi ang free annual payment is one pag 10 year plan then 3 years free naman pag 18yr plan ang binayaran.
this is to give you an insight para at least meron na kayo idea kung how much eto kasi yun naman ang impt aside sa benefits na makukuha sa pagiinvest natin sa ganito kung kaya o kakayanin o di talaga pede. very new kasi sa atin ang ganitong tech kaya parang hesistant iconsider. pero i tell u, once you have lost a loved one due to no choice..u'd do anything just to save his/her life no matter what the cost. sabi nga ng nanay ko, ang pera kinikita pa yan kahit paghirapan mo pa, kaya wag manghinayang.
hope to bring info to all of us here moms to be :) belly rubs!

Thanks also for this info sis golda.  My husband and I are having a debate about this... he wants to do it but I am hesitant because of the cost.  Dunno what to do yet  :-\

^akin lang, aside from baby, family rin naman magbebenefit if ever kailangan ng stem cell. and health should be a priority sabi nga ng dad ko kasi hindi mo na maibabalik yan if ever.

Got this good article from baby center about cord blood banking.  It's making me lean towards my decision... pero siguro if I have a second child at mas defined na yung technology, maybe we will opt for it...

http://bit.ly/i5lnM4

Our OB also suggested just donating our cord blood w/c is free of cost.  Given that there seems to be a higher likelihood of using another person's cord blood anyway, we may just opt for this.

^ from what i know, there us no public bank in the philippines.

Cord blood banking is not for everyone but i really see it as a good option for what if scenarios

My friend's daughter was diagnosed with leukemia last year at age 9. She passed away a couple of weeks ago. Had they stored her cord blood, baka buhay pa sya until now. A big what if.

A bone marrow transplant was one of their options but they had to find a 100% match and the 2 siblings werent matches. She got pregnant with her 4th child, gave birth last october. Pwede sana yung cord blood ng new baby for the sick sibling kasi 70-80% match lang ang requirement. Unfortunately, they were still in the process of testing viability when the sick daughter passed away.

I dont know what i would do if the same thing happened to me so i opted for cord blood banking for my baby.

You only get one chance to collect. Mahirap nang magsisi years from now na sana ginawa ito when there was a chance.

^amen on that sis. kahit dad and hubby ko yan rin ang stand. sure it may not be cheap but hindi mo na maibabalik ang buhay ng tao. a family friend's baby naman was diagnosed with kawasaki disease ba yun, and it was the baby's cord blood that made his recovery process faster.

We're still getting the facts straight nga e... pero according to that article I've read in babycenter:

- if your baby has leukemia (or another genetic disease), he can't use his own cord blood bec it already has the genetic markers for leukemia, he has to use another person's cord blood
- There is only a 25% chance that the siblings cord blood will be a match for each other
- Cord blood has not yet been used for adults; it doesn't have sufficient stem cells to treat adults

Anyways the issue might be moot for us since my husband has hep B, given my exposure/baby's exposure baka hindi din naman kami viable candidate for it.

Also not criticizing the decision of others to bank their cord blood... it's a very personal decision and I understand why people go for it.  Hindi ko rin nga alam bakit namention nung OB yung donation kung wala namang local cord blood bank  ;D  Ayoko rin masayang yung cord blood namin kung pwede namang magamit ng ibang tao.

One use needs millions of cells yata so i think in most cases, one use lang.

Sis, may local cord blood bank tayo, yung sa cordlife. but it's private, not public, so they dont accept donations.

^Thanks sis clueless.

Nag-google din ako kanina, although icoconfirm ko pa sa OB ko parang meron sa TMC. Makes sense kasi TMC sya affiliated at dun kami manganganak so baka kaya nya namention yon.  Pero mukhang may bayad nga din siguro to. http://growthmagazine.biz/cord.php

"At the Medical City, its cord blood bank adopts a kind of a hybrid system which involves a directed donation whose use is only for a certain family and a nondirected donation where a donor signs that his family members are eligible for one use, but the cells can be used for others too, according to Dr. Samuel D. Bernal, Medical City Regenerative Medicine consultant. The hospital is also able to expand the number of cells."

^ yan din sabi sa amin sa cordlife, wala daw public cord blood banks dito sa pinas... pero meron na pala.  kapag adult (18 above) na yung baby, kulang daw talaga yung nacollect na stem cell ng baby.  kaya pinag-iisipan talaga namin if donate to help others or pa-private bank.

Hi everyone  ;D

Nakausap ko na yung OB namin, who directed me to call TMC din.  Tinawagan ko yung TMC kanina (regenerative medicine dept - Ms. Claire) about cord blood banking.  Two options is directed and non-directed.

Yung sa directed donation, ito na yung parang sa cordlife/stemcord/etc. na privately sayo yung idodonate mo.  They have 2 packages, 49k+ for cord blood and 80k+ for cord blood and placenta.

Yung non-directed donation is FREE nga for now, including testing.  Kukunin nila yung cord blood and placenta.

For either case, mother has to be tested before 35 weeks sa Regenerative Medicine dept, 2nd floor TMC, M-F 8am-5pm.

Tinanong ko kung magkano yung cost kung kailangan ko gumamit ng cord blood.

Scenario 1: No directed or non-directed donation (free, no extraction)
I will have to pay 1) the cost to look for matching cord blood; 2) the cost of storing the matching cord blood equivalent to the package cost at that future date (which is surely higher than the current cost now).  So if the cost of the package is 100k sa 2015 when I use it, yun yung babayaran ko; 3) the cost of the procedure to use it

Scenario 2: Non-directed donation (free) - using my own donated cord blood or another person's cord blood
I will have to pay 1) the cost to match the cord blood; 2) the cost of storing the matching cord blood equivalent to the package cost at that future date (either mine or another person's); 3) the cost of the procedure to use it

Scenario 3: Directed donation (paid) - using my own donated cord blood or another person's cord blood
I will have to pay 1) the cost to match the cord blood; 2) the cost of the procedure to use it.  So even if I use another person's cord blood, I only need to pay for the "storage fee" once.

Bottomline: I will save money if I do direct donation IF I really need the cord blood in the future. It doesn't matter if my cord blood is a match or not, kasi the payment will apply whether I use mine or not (at least, ito yung sinabi sa akin ng nakausap ko sa TMC).

Hope this helps!  Tawag na lang kayo sa TMC if you want more details :)
