legality of retaining the use of maiden name after marriage

I am already 8 months married at wala pa ako napapalitan na any IDs kasi walang time to update and we just recently got our marriage contract. This is really my dilemma because I want to retain my maiden name, and my husband says that it's fine with him since I've been known in the profession with my maiden name. I was told by our HR that I can just update my marital status without changing my maiden name. Pero magkaka-problema daw with the beneficiaries ng GSIS (I'm working in a government-academic instution), BIR and Philhealth. Pwede din hyphenated but she warned me that there may be problems with remittances, usually naliligaw daw. It has something to do with their databases and encoding. It was further explained to me by a fellow instructor who handles programming courses kung bakit nagkakaproblema sa system kapag may sign na dash (-). I wonder why do these problems and inefficiencies exist? I mean, karapatan ng babae na i-maintain ang maiden name or hyphenated ang husband's name pero bakit either way, magkaka-problema pa rin? Until now, pinag-iisipan ko pa rin ng ito ng bongga dahil napakadaming proseso at pagpapaliwanagan na dadaanan. Ang hassle.

nakapagpachange passport na ako at pinayagan yung hypenated.

sample:
first name:  Rachel
middle name: Castillo
surname: Baguio-Magalit

kapag ask ano yung middle name? ano ang sasabihin? castillo o baguio?naguguluhan kasi ako.
nagpapabook kasi ako ng flight..hindi ko alam sasabihin ko kasi hindi ako sure.

Castillo. Hyphenated din ako. Basically you added your husband's surname to your last name.

I think yung hypenated should be legally declared before you can use it for legal documents. And wala yata sa law natin na pwede yun. Later on baka magkaproblema kayo sa identity. Baka kailangan pa mag submit ng affidavit that this person name,maiden,married is same as name,maiden-married. Kahit pareho pa ng address, bday, parents kung mga mahigpit like visa application, petition etc. magkakaroon ng issue. Sa first name nga lang nagkaka issue when Maria pala na spelled out and all your life you used Ma. So better use na lang just your maiden name if you want to keep it.

Sa mga calling cards, membership cards hypenated is fine. Hindi naman sila pwedeng gamitin as valid ID.

Under Article 370 of the New Civil Code, a married woman may use.

(1):    Her maiden first name and surname and add her husband’s surname, or

(2)   Her maiden first name and her husband’s surname, or

(3)   Her husband’s full name, but prefixing a word indicating that
she is his wife, such as “Mrs.”.

Hyphenated ako sa passport which is a legal valid government ID and
hindi naman ako ng kaka problem pa. I will update my bank details soon. Yung isang credit card ko hyphenated din. Sabi nga when you marry you change
your status and not necessarily your last name.

Additional info I got from a friend who is a lawyer. Yung kids pala hindi pwedeng gumamit ng hypen. Mali daw yun.

Yes. Only married women can hyphenate.

Most people in government offices are not aware of this. Magkasama kami ng friend ko na nag apply ng passport. She asked yong babae sa counter if she could use her maiden name kasi wala siya dala marriage cert. Sabi nung babae hindi pwede yon, hindi ko din alam. Kung noon alam ko na pwede pala di nasa tinulungan ko friend ko na makipag matigasan dun sa taga DFA.

I also didn't know this matter, Nakita ko lang sa Co-Teacher ko (gayagaya) before, kaya ever since i got married hypenated din ang lastname ko.

Nabasa ko lang din dito that it has a legal basis pala. So when i got married and renewed my passport naka hyphenate na.
i got visas too with my hyphenated surname. Pampahaba ng name.

i'm also planning to hyphenate my husband's surname. I started with my credit cards and nakakafrustrate mga tao kasi they don't understand when a surname is hyphenated.

My CNI is also hyphenated but hindi ko ako ngarerenew mng passport as the validity is still until 2015.

LTO does not allow hyphenated name kahit na by law eh pwede. Kahit change status, they expect the woman to adopt her husband's name pa din.

Although it's in the civil code of the Philippines, not all government departments follow it. The safest way is to change into the husband's surname kasi yun yung norm.
Eto na lang din gagawin ko later on para wala nang complications.

^ why don't they allow it to be hyphenated? that's odd, nasa law naman natin yun and dapat uniform with all the government agencies. If pwede sa passport, dapat sa iba pwede din para all the same.

I have hyphenated my husband's surname to mine. Even before ko pa siya makilala, I have already decided that I'm not going to drop my surname.  First and foremost, for practical reason. I have already established my career as a physician and my patients know me in my maiden name. Actually, most of female doctors that I know hyphenate for this reason. Second would be for sentimental reason. I think being the only doctor in the family, I owe it to them that I retain our family name.

I have updated my status/name sa PRC, Philhealth and passport. All of them asked me: "So mag-hyphenate po kayo?" I said yes. No problem naman with them. My Philhealth MDR reflected my hyphenated surname and I expect that my PRC ID and passport will reflect the same as well.

As for bank accounts, I've only updated my name to that of our joint checking account. BPI has no problem naman that I use a hyphenated surname. As for the rest of my bank accounts, I didn't bother to update my status or name muna. This is where I deposit my checks na maiden name pa rin ang nakalagay.

ako naman widowed na, gusto ko sana maretain na ang maiden surname ko, pwede naman siguro? lahat kasi ng ID's (SSS unified, tin) ko, passport etc eh surname ng late husband ko..

few months after i got married i started using my husband's lastname... sss at passport nalang yung di ko pa nauupdate.. ang gusto ko talaga hypenated kaso sobrang haba ng name ko..

pwede ko pa ba baguhin at gawing hypenated instead na last name lang ng husband ko gamit ko?

DFA lady just denied my passport  renewal coz she said I had to present an affidavit document why my old passport still has my old maiden name eh married na daw ako ng 2mos nun 2010 na inapply ko sya. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hi girls, would appreciate any info on this..
After marriage, I renewed my passport and changed my name on the application as MAIDEN LAST NAME - HUSBAND's FAMILY NAME.
Now my passport is ready for pick-up at the Consulate. But I have not gone and picked it up yet.
My husband strongly disapproved of this hyphenated last name.
To avoid any more conflict with the husband, I want to remove the hyphen and just use husband's family name as my last name.
How can I do this?
I am thinking, should I just let the passport sit in the consulate await for it to be cancelled in 6 months and then apply for a new one.
My old passport has been extended till July 2015.
Or should I upon release of the passport, immediately request for renewal under the new last name of husband without the hyphen.
