^sis same tayo ng problem. we recently got a condo and they're requiring me to submit an id bearing my husband's surname. sarap sapakin lang e. bakit hindi enough ang marriage certificate? ano pa ba kailangan nila, blood test?! ang hirap hirap sobra kasi hindi ako makapagchange ng surname because hassle sa work ko kung babaguhin ko maski na gustung gusto ko ng baguhin. pwede ba "isampal" sa mga mukha nila yung stated na law na ni-share dito sa thread na to about our options with regards to this matter? nakakairita kasi e. imagine, kelangan ko pa umuwi sa pinas para asikasuhin at least isang id bearing my husband's surname. ibalik ko kaya sa kanila yung gusto nilang mangyari. sabihin ko kaya, "ok, i will get an id with my husband's name if you can show me (in black and white) a law stating that it is a must to change my surname." super AAASSSAAARRR ako talaga!!!! >:(

Pero what I can suggest is be consistent na lang on what name you will use kasi I'm sure magkakaroon ng problema pag magkaiba yung gamit mong names. Consult a lawyer kaya sis para smooth yung transition mo.

i'm so glad i found this thread... matagal nang palaisipan sakin ang bagay nato and i'm thankful to everyone who posted information here...

plano ko talaga dati pa to keep my maiden name even when i marry...
(1) professional reasons, kasi at the time, self-brands were a significant part of my work
(2) di hamak na mas maganda ang mga apelyido ko - middle and last names - kaysa kay bf
(3) pareho kami ng first name ni bf's sister so if ever i take his name pa... we'll i just feel i'm one step closer to being cloned...
(4) above all, i'm just too attached to my name :)

Here's the law regarding surnames of married women:
Article 370, Civil Code
A married woman may use:
(1) her maiden first name and surname and add her husband's surname  (this is the hyphen version)
(2) her maiden first name and her husband's surname (eto yung traditional)
(3) her husband's full name, but prefixing a word indicating that she is his wife, such as "Mrs."

Kaya, married women are not allowed by law to just retain their maiden name without attaching the surname of their husband. This is what our teacher taught us last year in law school. Not quite sure about Jinggoy's bill if na-pass as law na.

Kuha ka kaya ng postal id.  Dun ka na lang maghyphenate.  Or kuha ka ng lawyer.  Pakialam nila kung kasal kayo ng mister mo o hindi.  Bakit kailangan pa ng id bearing your husbands surname?  Nandoon ba sa kontrata yon?  Or hingi ka ng tulong kay Mayor or sa legal office ng city or province mo.  What can they do if you can't produce an id anyway?  Kick you out of the condo?

The key word here is "A married woman may use."

According to my former law professor, in legal terms, the word "may" indicates permissiveness, meaning you are free to accept or reject the suggested presumption...which in this case is the presumption that a woman will want to change her name after getting married. Ff you agree with the presumption, then you can change your name to one of the following options presented (1, 2 or 3). If f I reject the presumption that I will change my name because I'm married, then I'm free to retain my original (maiden) name.

It only becomes mandatory if the word "shall" was used (which in this case was not).

I just got married last month. Until now, wala pa akong pag aasikaso ng papers or pag aasikaso ng status. Walang akong idea kung san ako mag sisimula. Di din ako sanay pa sa new surname ko kaya kahit saang transactions, maiden name ko pa din gamit ko.

i've the same understanding...i'm still set on keeping my name despite the hassles  :)

the wife is not required to use husband's surname name.. permissive lang but not mandatory.. madami na supreme court case yan, example:

1. G.R. No. 94986 February 23, 1995
HATIMA C. YASIN, represented by her Attorney-in-Fact, HADJI HASAN S. CENTI vs. THE HONORABLE JUDGE SHARI'A DISTRICT COURT THIRD SHARI'A JUDICIAL DISTRICT, Zamboanga City

2. G.R. No. 169202               March 5, 2010
MARIA VIRGINIA V. REMO vs. THE HONORABLE SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

"Clearly, a married woman has an option, but not a duty, to use the surname of the husband in any of the ways provided by Article 370 of the Civil Code. She is therefore allowed to use not only any of the three names provided in Article 370, but also her maiden name upon marriage. She is not prohibited from continuously using her maiden name once she is married because when a woman marries, she does not change her name but only her civil status. Further, this interpretation is in consonance with the principle that surnames indicate descent."

sad but true... we who choose to retain our names should be prepared for the hassle... i have a hard time convincing my own dad :)

Curious lang ako rito. Pwede ba yung parang dual surname ang dinadala mo.

Kunyari Mrs. Myfirstname I. Maidename-Husbandsname
or it is like Mrs. Girl A. Lady-Gentleman.
Mrs. Lady-Gentleman
meaning to say dalawa yung dinadala mong surname na may dash, pwede ba yung ganun?
