^Feminism.

The notion that a woman is not a man's property to take his surname.

Many women also feel that they'll lose their identity if they give up their maiden name.

^ Yes. Ako nga ayoko na totally ng surname kasi galing din yun sa lalaki. Sa tatay ko. Very patriarchal lang ang sistema.

Dapat nga kung tutuusin, the guys take up our names (they do this in some countries, especially if the woman's family is wealthier). Genealogy is traced through the woman naman kasi talaga, not the man. Yung babae kasi ang nanganganak, so sa kanya ka lang talaga sure na anak niya yung inanak niya.

^ Yup, wala namang masama if you break away from institution and retain your maiden name. I think it's a really good thing, it empowers women in my opinion.

^^ ok sis to be clear, ano ang gusto mong malaman? re hyphenated surname?

in order to use the hyphenated surname, dapat kasal muna kayo. [silly answer  ;D ;D ;D]

^ when i got married, i started using my hyphenated surname too, i sign   papers/documents na hyphenated na yung surname and i think wala namang  rules kung paano gamitin ito, but nasa law natin, na we have the right either we use our maiden name or attach the hubby's surname to our names.

Sorry  Ms. Ebiko, mali lang yung tanong.. Hindi naman po yung format yung tanong ko..

What I mean, pagka- kasal ko, automatic ba na puede ko na gamitin gamitin agad in all my documents or papers?or sa marriage contract namin kelangan isulat ko yung hypenated name ko po agad?or kelangan ma- release muna yung marriage contract namin from NSO, before I use the hypenated format?

Hmmm, if it's already legal to retain your maiden name, why the need still for Sen Jinggoy's senate bill allowing women to use the maiden name? Redundant? Sayang naman senate funds if this is the case

Sa mga sisses natin na magma-migrate sa UK and planning to use double-barreled surname, you should also consider the culture here.  It's usually only posh families who do this and if you're not, people might think you're pretentious.  Cultural differences lang naman, of course sa atin, it's totally acceptable.

Another thing to consider naman whilst travelling is kapag may kasama kayong anak na different last name sa mum, always bring the kid's birth cetifiicate to prove maternity.  We have experieced this with my sis-in-law, akala nila nag-kidnap kami ng bata. :)

i want to retain my maiden name, with hubby's approval but just wondering if there's any other complications?  like when checks issued to me named with my hubby's surname (since they've assumed i'll be changing names) ....

constant explanation why your surname is still your maiden name though you are already married.  i have friends who traveled out of the country, sa immigration lagi explain si wife na married sila but retain nya maiden name.  tapos hanap daw lagi yung marriage contract.

or when you get to have children, ask pa din si school bakit hindi kayo pareho ng surname ni husband

sa legal profession, halos lahat ng female lawyers are using their maiden name and surname of their husband using hyphen, kasi usually their maiden name ang nakalagay sa roll of attorney, kaya dinadagdag nalang nila yung name ng husband nila

eg.

Atty. Juana L. Reyes (yan ang nakalagay sa roll of attorney)

then let's say, she eventually got  married to Mr. John Doe, so ang gagamitin na is

Atty. Juana L. Reyes-Doe

nashare ko lang mga sisses

I'm just wondering, hindi ba ito magiging problema in the future like what happened to those "Ma." and "Maria" names pati na din yung may mga II or Jr.  Before we thought Ma. and Maria are one and the same, tapos in a not-so-distant-past sabi ni govt body (NSO or Civil Registry?) iba si Ma. at si Maria.  So paano na kung Jean Manix-Lee (hypothetical) gamit ko sa new ID, hindi ba kwestyunin yung dash (-) later?

;) thanks mga sis sa mga thoughts nyo here sa thread na to....

I also have some questions in my mind. I was married since 2009 and up until now I'm using my maiden name. Medyo complicated kasi surname ni hubby kaya decided to retain my surname. Mukha naman wlang problem kay hubby. I have already done back reading the post of our fellow gtalkers here and medyo may clarifications lang ako.

I've already changed the status on my SSS and bir forms and Married with 1 dependent narin ang tax exemption status ko though my work email signature is still my surname which means di ako nagpapalit sa records ko sa hr.

Here is my question: I have renewed my passport with my maiden name kasi may valid us visa (mar 2011) pako nun with my maiden. Nagexpire na visa ko and my passport is still valid until 2015 im thinking na mag apply ng renewal ng visa ko using my maiden name parin. magkaroon kaya ako ng problem nun?

got a copy of our marriage certificate recently from the church (not NSO yet) and went to BDO (BOOO!!)  to deposit our "mr and mrs" (or some with my hubby's surname on my name) gift cheques.  the manager approved of our cheques, PROVIDED that I provide later on an government ID bearing my husband's surname.

I told them that I am not changing my surname...just updating my status, the marriage certificate SHOULD explain my association with my hubby's surname.

di nila maintindihan kahit na i've explain so many times that it's my personal choice to retain it legally.  firm pa rin si manager to ask for that ID.  Kairita!
