Why do most Filipinos want WHITE SKIN? Arent we proud to be BROWN?

We all have our own idea or standard for beauty. Siguro, i-respeto na lang natin yong choice and preference ng iba. There is nothing wrong with wanting to improve yourself, so long as wala kang tinatapakan, di ba?

I admit na im one of those na gusto talagang pumuti. And im not ashamed of it. Pera ko naman ang ginagastos ko. But hindi naman talaga ako brown or maitim. Some would even call me maputi. Siguro nga, di lang ako kuntento.

of course i respect pinoys who prefer white skin. i myself used to buy whitening lotions way back then (though i also use tanning spray during summer in the pinas at the beach). i am just wondering if my reasons / assumptions are the same or at least similar to the other pinoys.

nothing wrong naman in asking why pinoys want white skin diba? it's just a matter of curiousity coz i have been exposed to other nationalities who ask the same questions, since they themselves admire our natural brown skin.

anyway, i think one of the reasons is para maiba lang sa karamihan. in a country where most people are kayumanggi, mapapansin ka talaga pag maputi ka di ba? i remember when we were in hongkong, sa MTR pansin ko lahat ng katabi ko kakulay ko and i was like, 'ay, pareho lang kaming lahat', unlike sa LRT, ang isip ko 'wow ang puti ko'.
so maybe it's just a way to be unique among the others. IMO lang naman.

^and so I go back to my previous premise in my previous post, colonial mentality.  All the nations you have mentioned were under the Western powers at one point in history - Dutch, French, British, Portuguese.  And thus the conquered's association of the color white to higher social status, and ultimately living a better life.  That's one theoretical framework which explains this.

Another framework goes as simple as this: everyone wants to have a piece of any scarce resource. White skin is something very scarce in a dominantly brown country, while brown is something very scarce in a dominantly white country.  Thus, the browns want to become white.  On the other hand, the whites want to become brown.

Who's right and who's wrong - there is none.  Unless in the quest of getting one's desired color he or she's already stepping on others and forgetting that he or she has other purposes on this earth, and ultimately if he or she fails to enjoy life, then that's the time he or she should rethink things over.

^oops, you got me there, I was unable to read Thailand.  Although Thailand technically remained uninvaded until WW2, it was sandwiched between colonies and the influence was there.  It was only diplomacy that saved them from being colonized nevertheless the contact with the west was still there.  However, one cannot deny the fact that they are still a victim of neocolonialism.  Name any branded western clothes, you'll find them in Thailand because they are manufactured there.  Agh.  I hate sounding too scholarly in making a point.

people want to look different para mapansin ka at maging attractive or stand-out from the crowd.

same with the eyes. naisip ko tuloy, sa pinas, chinito/chinita eyes are considered to be attractive. or the blue eyes and blonde hair.
when i went to korea, the small-eyed korean people admired me , how big my eyes are. both males and females, young and old.
i never got such compliments from my fellow pinoys back in the phils. where everybody thinks small eyes equals attractive. =)
and the koreans even spend money for eye-lid cosmetic surgery, becoz for them, having eyelids is considered attractive.
(e diba most koreans dont have eyelids?)
so siguro, yun ang counterpart ng pag-take ng glutathione ng mga pinoy, since lots of filipinos spend money just to have white skin.

There's an Pond's commercial in there for India. We have a similar one, where the husband only becomes "sweet" to his wife after her skin became fairer.

Indonesians, Malaysians and even the Chinese (who are perceived to already have fair skin) all aspire to be even more fair. And as one person said here already, it's even worse in Thailand.

Heart Evangelista's skin whitener commercial really bothers me. She's always saying that she's "white" and she's now "more white" because of that product. I think Maja Salvador endorses that now, but don't quote me on that. Maja says the same thing, that she's "white".

I don't know, that really bothers me because to me white = Caucasian race and they're Filipina! But that's just me. I know white means maputi to us Filipinos.

i didnt know that indians also wants to achieve white skin until i saw this video.
if my memory serves me right, they used to be a colony of the british (white) people. tama ba? they were exposed to the white people in the past, so siguro affected din sila ng colonial mentality kaya gusto rin nila pumuti, para ma-feel nilang superior sila among the brown-skinned ones.

Nakakalungkot 'to kasi napakaganda talaga kulay ng pinoy. A lot of caucasians spend time and money and risk skin cancer lang para lang makuha yung tanned and golden color natin. Kami ni bf (he's french) nag cocontest pa kung sino mas maitim after we go to the beach. Inggit siya parati sa kulay ko. I count myself lucky kasi im happy with my color and im certainly proud of it

sa totoo lang, nagagandahan ako sa brown skin e. lalo na kung mejo glowy-effect, ang healthy at ang sexy tingnan. seryoso! walang appeal pag naka-swimwear (kahit pati sa guys, half-naked) yung sobrang puti. mas bagay talaga ang tanned bronze skin pag naka-swimwear.

I have a cousin who has a similar bone structure to Naomi Campbell and she is also as brown as a cadbury milk choco. Since maputi kami na cousin niya naiinggit siya, gusto niya rin daw pumuti. Sabi ko ako naman inggit sa color and kinis ng balat niya. Ang deal namin never siyang magpapaputi and if she does, sasabunutan ko siya ng bonggang bongga! Ayun, so far successful naman ako sa pagdiscourage sa kanya. I really really find her very pretty with her color

I've heard people exclaim with admiration, "Ay, ang ganda! Ang puti-puti!" but never "Ay, ang ganda! Ang itim-itim!" 

In many asian cultures, darker skin is associated with the peasantry and the working class.  Kahit hindi na-colonize na countries may preference pa rin sa lighter skin.

before gustong gusto ko ang light skin. pero suddenly nagiba ang liking ko.  moreno na ako since last year.. coz i find this color hawt. ma appeal siya for me. esp yung mejo orangey (bagong sunog) i have to sunbathe 3x a week para ma-maintain ang color, otherwise bumabalik sa pale skin.

i'm not fair and i admit it, i want to have a fair skin kasi sawang sawa na ako sa skin color ko, masyadong uneven.
okay lang naman sakin na morena ako basta even lang, kasi may mga parts na maputi meron namang maitim like my forearm.

sa aming magkakapatid, ako lang ang naiibang kulay.maputi kahit papano compared to them na brown color talaga. i admire their color. napatunayan ko yun sa sarili ko noong minsan nag aagahan kami ng nanay ko at panay ang tingin niya sa akin. then all of a sudden, sinabi niya na , maputi ka lang pero hindi ka maganda. bigla akong napaisip. sana nga pare parehas na lang kami. para fair.

sa tingin ko isang influence din kasi ang media.most advertisements,pag maputi ka, mas maganda ka. pero wala naman tatalo kapag naaappreciate mo ang brown color mo. maraming magagandang maputi, at kung gusto man nila maenhance ang kanilang skin color, ok lang din naman. kung saan tayo magiging masaya lahat, go lang! cheers!
