Great thread and hi sis caeca! :) If I may weigh in, pardon the pun mga sis', I must say pretty much all these Myths have been busted. Having been lifting weights for fitness the last 3 years and powerlifting for the last 3 months, I can say I'm no closer to looking like a female Arnold Schwarzenegger. If you're into this then go seriously into Body Building. If I can even look ripped and lean it would be a dream for now kasi it's hard to maintain a very clean diet, lots of cardio or lifting heavy ka na talaga. Though it's do-able but you need dedication.

Now if you want to look leaner and lose weight like some sis' here then lifting weights to gain muscle will be the best thing you can do for yourselves right now, along with cardio to burn off the fat. Or not as sis rys has done, good for you sis. More muscle means more fat burning power talaga.

In powerlifting muscle=power, so my coach doesn't let me do high intensity cardio, it'll eat muscle as well as deplete strenght kasi. So Myth #6 doesn't exist for us, kaya some tend to be on the big side if they eat anything they want. We come in all shapes and sizes though. :)

hi sis airborne! thanks a lot for 'weighing in!'  ;D how are you na? you had really impressive lifting numbers, and i'm sure they're even better now. i definitely have to drop by your gym one of these days para ma-try ko rin! ;)

dream ko yung to be able to be as lean as possible without being on a very restrictive diet. but yeah, since building more muscle, i've been able to eat so much more than when i was just doing aerobics.

i saw some articles on t-nation about these former powerlifters who decided to clean up their diets. from stuffing themselves with pizza and fastfood, they began eating clean, and the physiques afterwards were super impressive! :)

Hi sis! Yup I've read something similar where PL'ers who clean up their diet start lifting even better. Tho at my gym, as one Coach put it just kanina, weight=strenght and there's still no going around it. But I've seen some of the women powerlifters at the recent World Championship who are lean but strong and muscular looking. It's nice to have them as examples to aim for.

hi caeca and other sises.

dami takot sa weight lifting.  magkakamuscles daw sila, actually may muscles naman tayo lahat e.  hehe  seriously, ang hirap magbuild ng muscles kung girl ka.

Indeed sis, because 1st, we women doesnt have enough testosterone for that, and we can only have BIG muscles if we are using muscle building supplements.

Pero, i think that if we will opt not to do weight training exercises just because of that fear or believing in that weight training myth, then we are definitely missing out a lot of the benefits that weight training can offer to our general health & fitness :'(

If we girls will lift weights, of course we cannot remove the fact that we build muscle tissues, but one thing for sure is that they are not the muscles like those body builders.. Our muscles will just tone our body shape resulting to a strongly tight, firm, healthy and desirably fit body. Try to look for alternative weight training exercises aside from the traditional weight training routines that we know as there are so many weight training exercises that promotes wellness of your whole body  :)

^ what i do is i supplement my usual weight training routine with kettlebell work. the addition of that makes such a difference in body composition! :) i'm still getting used to the movements, though. :D

oo siguro, parang papayat vs. gagaan.

sa akin hindi agad kita yung pagpayat pero lumakas ako at naging okay yung posture ko.  mas madami kasi benefits weight training.

how often do you lift weights? I lift weights everyday except sat and sun tapos alternate days yun upper body workout and lower body...

which is more effective ba? full body workout every other day or mwf, upper body tapos t-th, lower body?

Sis you shouldn't lift everyday, allow a day of rest in between. You could do a 3 Day split: say Back/Triceps, Shoulders/Biceps, Chest/Legs then abs 3x/week also. Example lang grouping ng body parts at sequence niya sis, it's just off the top of my head. But it's for you to get an idea lang. There's plenty of variations to this.

3x a week, maximum na daw yan sabi ni coach.  kelangan ng rest daw to let the muscles heal.

depend din sa program kasi sa amin namin noon nag iincrease yung weight every session kaya dapat may rest in between talaga.

hindi ko ata kakayanin everyday.

for me ha, it's best to use compound movements (ergo full body workout) every other day. :) takes less time too!

^ang hirap nga mag-gym during xmas season! i confess i skipped a few days. lamig kasi e, kakatamad tuloy. lol!!! but i'm back on track again. hehe. :D
