Hello fellow Gtalkers! Anyone here living or working in Melbourne? I have a job offer in Melbourne and am just awaiting my 457 visa. Would love to know any Gtalkers living there. Any tips on which area to live? Would appreciate any posts about Melbourne, tips and cost of living etc.

I'm living here in Melbourne.  If you are asking which area to live, it depends on your preference. If you want cheaper areas for your accomodation, look for areas, 20-30 mins far from the Melbourne CBD. It's cheaper in western parts compared to northern and eastern.
Cost of living? Just look it this way, your living expenses will just be half or maybe less than half of your monthly salary.
By the way sis, ano magiging work mo dito?

Thanks for the reply super_mum, is having a car a necessity there? Coz here in NZ it is. I know that its going to be hard to find parking space in CBD during weekdays so I was thinking of renting a place nearby or malapit sa tram, train or bus. What do u think of St Kilda?

I went there for an interview so medyo nagka-idea na ko about the place. Nagtitingin din ako sa rental site in aussie...

^Sis you may check these areas: St. Kilda, South Yarra, Kensington, Richmond.  They're very close to CBD and has trams/trains.  You may also view in google earth if trams/trains are available in a certain area.

Ako pa ang tinanong mo about kung necessity ba ang car...He he, di pa ako marunong magdrive and many will not agree with me pero it's not a necessity for me. I live in western part of Melbourne, may work is in CBD, may train is 30 mins away. From my house, I take pa 1 bus hanggang sa train station pero mga 10 minute-ride lang. During weekends, when I want to go to shopping malls, I take the bus kaya memorize ko na ang mga oras. May ticket is monthly, so one to sawa na ang rides sa kahit anong public transport.
Pedi ka namang maghanap ng mga apartment na malapit sa CBD para di mo na problema ang transport. OK naman iyang St Kilda. Basta kung OK lang sayo mas mataas ang rent.

Re car, yup it's a necessity most esp during weekend masarap mamasyal=)  pero i think enjoy mo muna yung pag commute para ma-familiarize ka sa mga places dito. mahal din ang parking fee sa office so mas ok pag malapit sa tram station yung apartment mo.

i'll be flying to Melbourne from NZ this Saturday and will start working on Monday next week. excited and a bit scared.

Re car, yup it's a necessity most esp during weekend masarap mamasyal=)  pero i think enjoy mo muna yung pag commute para ma-familiarize ka sa mga places dito. mahal din ang parking fee sa office so mas ok pag malapit sa tram station yung apartment mo.

re monthly expenses, sa food enough na yung $500 for family members of 3, kasama na dun yung wet market and grocery.  monthly metcard is $105 unlimited rides in a tram,train or bus and valid for 1 month, pwede rin yung weekly or daily or 2 hours. mas sulit lang pag 1month kase mas mkaka-discount. yung electricity naman including water heater and electric cooking $200-300 every 3 months. prepaid internet $49 4GB, im using three so bago mag expire yung internet load, recharge agad para mag accumulate sa next load.

for other expenses, depende sa needs and lifestyle per person or per family.

hi sis thanks the reply. i arrived here in melbourne last Friday. i'm just wondering dun sa utility bills (water and electricity) 3 months [textspeak!] nabanggit mo. tama ba? per 3 months ba ang billing ng utilities dito?

hi Sis, welcome to Melby!  Electricty/gas yup every 3 months. yung water usually free yun pag rent ng apartment/unit.
