constipation in toddlers

my little girl is constipated since she was a baby. i don't think it is with the diet since she eats veggies and fruits everyday. she drinks lots of water too. we even went to a phase that we only eat brown rice. pero ganun pa din. her constipation was really bad that it even came to a point na nawalan siya ng malay during one of her episodes. i guess its a mixture of lack of sleep and too much straining. i lost count on the numerous times we rushed her to the ER in the middle of the night bec of this. sabi ko nga mas mabilis pa labor ko.

we eventually went to see a gastro specialist. like marge_medina, when she was xrayed her tummy was full of poop. my daughter was placed on a series of medication (duphalac, lactulose, mineral oil plus others) to see if the problem is physiological (there's something wrong with her internally) or psychological (all in the head na it's hard for her to do poop). the gastro was saying giving laxative alone is just a temporary solution. dapat malaman if anong reason why thats happening. kasi if it's psychological, magiging dependent ang kid sa laxative. so retraining the brain is needed so that it will "re-learn" that pooping is not and should not be painful. if retraining is a failure, thats when she'll move to exploring the possibility that she has internal problem.

The retraining phase is supposed to go on for 3 mos. Imagine, we have to visit the doctor every other week so that she can do rectal exam (on a 3yo!). it came to a point na my daughter was already traumatized with the gastro. not to mention she's been missing too much school days since her bowel movements is uncontrollable (when she was on medications) I was afraid she'd poop on herself in school.

Anyway, pinkpotato recommended pedia-lax (since i think thats what her kid's pedia recommended). I showed it to my kid's pedia (not gastro) and said why dont we try it since it's only dietary fiber supplement. good thing we did. my daughter has been regularly moving since she's on pedia-lax gummy.

^nope not the gastro but my kid's pedia Lang. My daughter was really traumatized with the gastro. Just the mention of her name makes my daughter go on tantrum fits. The pedia said if it's physiological, even the pedia lax won't help. I asked my friend to buy it in SG. she takes it with every meal. Even if we skip, she's regular pa din

I observe that too. once the bowel movement has been regularized after taking pedia lax for quiet some time, the body gets use to it. even skipping days of pedia lax, di na constipated ang bata. then we let her take it again if medyo nahihirapan ulet.

also, apple juice may have added the cause to my daugther's constipation. we also stopped giving her freshly squeezed apple juice. so far so good.

to edit, hind sya nirecommend ng pedia. it was just a blessing, i saw it from display sa isang health and beauty store.

btw in HK, this gummy fiber has commercial din sa mga buses and establishments

i will try this pedia-lax too.  lagi rin constipated yung 3-year old ko.  problem is, pag gusto nya mag-poop, he can sit on the toilet for hours!  kawawa nga kasi minsan kahit inaantok na, ayaw pang umalis sa toilet until may lumabas.  we make extra effort para meron fiber in each meal.  it usually works pero minsan, it doesn't.  hayyyy, sobrang big deal ng poop sa house namin... it's one of the first questions my husband asks when he gets home, LOL!

^thats how we were too before. During my daughter's episodes halos every hour my husband would ask if naka-poop na siya. Parenthood / motherhood is really something...you appreciAte small things like poop!

^ sis i sent hunny ally a bottle dati just to try, it was just through EMS. regular mail. it took around a month or sp. haha. pero after that nagpabili na sya marami from here, we send through relatives na uuwi. medyo hassle lang but if you like im willing to help. ang hirap at kawawa mga bata pag nag constipate.

ang effect din ng constipation sa daughter ko, she doesn't use pottychair pag poopoo. she is on diaper, will go to our room, naka hubad, no aircon or fan at kailangan walang people around[nahihiya siguro sa amoy]. kahit regular pag poop nya naging ganito na way nya. hinayaan ko lang as long as lumabas. she can do whatever way she wants as long as she's comfortable.

anak ko rin, sis, 4 yrs old na, naka-diaper pa rin mag-poop. like you i let her na lang para na rin lang maka-poop siya. sabi ng gastro, [textspeak!] na rin lang daw. bayaan lang na sa diaper. in time rin naman daw matututo rin siya sa toilet bowl.

I have the same problem with Aidan. He is 26 months old and hirap siya mag poop. Every 2 days siya nag p poop and umiiyak talaga siya. I give him suppository pero naubos na kanina. And I gusto ko na i stop kasi I dont want him to be dependent on that. Then, nag suggest yung pedia niya na Dulphalac daw. Ayun after a few minutes lumabas na agad. Pero ayoko naman na masanay siya dun lalo kasi gamot na talaga na iniinom yun e.

He eats dried prunes everyday and ni-lessen ko na yung milk intake niya pero ganun parin. I think I have to change his diet. Napansin ko kasi na sabaw and rice lang ang gusto niya e. Healthy naman siya pero kailangan siguro more fiber. Hindi kasi siya masyadong kumakain ng green leafy vegetables e..

I'll update everyone here kapag may improvement kapag na change na yung diet niya.

2 days constipated din ang baby ko kasi nagchange ako ng milk niya.  iyak siya ng iyak kasi sobrang tigas talaga ng poop niya.  We buy dulcolax effective naman pero umiiyak pa din.  Ayaw ko naman na tuwing mag poop siya lalagyan ko lagi ng suppository ang pwet niya.  What my nanay did was she cooked malunggay leaves tapos we blender it.  Gustong gusto naman ng baby ko ang lasa niya.  After 3-4 hours nag poop na siya at now normal na ulit ang pagtae niya. Ibinalik ko na din yung dati niyang gatas tapos everyday we make sure na mag ulam siya ng malunggay kahit once a day lang.

my pamangkin has the same problem...palagi din sya umiiyak everytime mag popooh sya. Mga sis I just want to ask bka may ma recommend naman kayo na good pedia within quezon city area. Yung pedia nya kc ngayon medyo di ok..di man lang nagbibigay ng advise at lagi nagmamadali. She's from childrens hospital.Any recommendation pls. Thanks

my 3yo son has the same problem too. Nasanay na din sa suppository. Hay di din kasi mahilig sa gulay. Gusto lang mga juice. I just tried peaches. Ayun minsan nagiging regular. Kaya lang magastos pag laging me peaches inuubos kasi agad
