May mga schools na nagrrequire ng number of units para makapasok ka sa kanila.. mostly dapat centered sa science ang premed para macredit nila. Iba iba ang standards ng iba't ibang schools.  You have to take NMAT or National Medical Admission Test first. Most schools require that exam. NMAT is composed of subjects in bio, physics, algebra, social sciences and chemistry. Parang college entrance exam sya. :) May certain grade na nirerequire ang schools or cut-off value na tinatawag, hindi passing rate. :) Kapag pasok [textspeak!] grade mo, dun ka palang makakapag-apply. From what I heard, may mga schools na pumapayag na mababa ang NMAT grade kasi sabi nung iba, for formality lang daw 'yun.

^ hello! sorry for the late reply. actually, you do not need to take a pre-med course (of another 4 years). my pre-requisite number of units needed for you to be eligible to apply for med school. the biggest number is under the biological sciences (15 units yata), social sciences is 5, etc. you can research about it, or ask other girltalkers who are also taking the nmat. all you have to do is apply to schools just to complete/meet those pre-requisite units.

goodluck!

naku thank you sis, ^^ actually yan din yung sabe saken nung friend ko may cases kc na mass com yung course ng friend nya then after a year lang pumasok na agad sa medicine... ang iniicp ko naman, you think it's much better na kumuha ako ng nursing then ituloy ko ng medicine later? atleast may fall back kung hindi ko kayanin yung medicine? haha... natatakot kasi ako.. thanks sa info po.

^ hmm. first & foremost, think about this decision (of going into medical school) very very very seriously and very very very very hard. ask yourself if you really wanna be a doctor. it's either a "YES" or a  "NO" lang. walang "maybe". kung pangungunahan ka ng takot or kaba, then i believe you're not taking this seriously.

and if you're determined to become one, "fallbacks" will be the least thing in your mind. IMO, why go into the trouble of studying another 4 years before you enroll into medical school? you can complete the required number of units in around 2 yrs lang. plus, some students get a year or two delayed in applying because they failed to meet the NMAT cut-off scores of their "target" med school/s.

however, if you feel that you can do it ("kasi bata ka pa naman"), you have the luxury of time, and your parents can afford to send you to both nursing and medical schools then by all means go for it!  :)

exams will always be a part of your life, even if licensed physician ka na dito or somewhere else.

there's no such thing as an accredited medical school internationally. ang meron ngayon are medical schools which are certified and recognized by the ECFMG (educational commission of foreign medical graduates). you can have & complete your medical education here in the philippines, then have your training elsewhere. the most common path done by most medical graduates are applying for residency in the USA (through the USMLE).

as for australia.. let me be realistic. applying for australia as an IMG (international medical graduate) is one of the most difficult paths. many physicians have tried and were unsuccessful. strict na ang australia sa pagtanggap ng mga IMGs. in fact, there was a "rumor" na baka hindi na sila tumanggap ng IMGs kasi maraming medical schools ang nagbubukas sa australia & they will prefer their own graduates. yung written exam pa lang, napakamahal na (worth Php80K+) and sobrang hirap pa because they follow the british medical system (compared dito sa atin na american medical system ang sinusunod). furthermore, yung reviewers for the written exam are not available locally. bawal sa kanila ang mga "photocopied books".  if you are lucky to pass the written exam, you can start applying to any australian hospital. however if you're accepted, your work there is a "house officer" & it's very temporary & conditional. you are still required to take their oral exams, which is around Php100K+ and ang waiting time mo to take the exams is around 3-5 years pa. then saka mo lang makukuha ang license mo dun. but as "general practitioner" ka lang.  if you're planning to undergo specialty training there, eh goodluck! dadaan ka sa butas ng karayom and taon ang bibilangin mo.

ohh... sayang sis :(
Actually it happened to me din. Last april naman ako dapat mag exam pero i chickened out kahit naka register nako. My reason naman was hindi ako prepared to take the exam. Parang I dont want to take it ng hindi ko binibigay yung best ko :(

Finally, I took mine this December :)

Go ka lang sis, take the April exam :) Goodluck to you  ;)

ano po yung cut off sa nmat ng UST? Nakita ko na result nung akin, wala ako naging review. Sayang. Pero nasa upper half ako.. Sana makapasok ako sa UST. First choice ko sya, then choice ko din po PLM, at FEU.

Hi pretinnes,
I know someone who started med I think he was 27-28 na and he was really a good student even before his med course. He even had an NMAT score of 98!
I think it will just depend on your study habits, perseverance and if you really like medicine that much, age and working experience wouldn't be an opposition :)

Minsan panga, some schools prefer yung may working experience na (clinical setting) kasi mas may background sila on how to work in the hospital.

Although I wouldn't know which schools are those. hehe A bee just told me lang about it :) Might be or might not be true. My point is, the key to medicine is that you should really love what you do and (practically speacking) have the financial goods for it :)

Hi sis, dapat mag BRAINS ako, kaso I got late sa enrollment. Once nag start na kasi yung sessions nila, hindi na sila tumatanggap ng new reviewees and punuan kasi slots dun.

But according to some of my friends, fast phased daw yung pagtuturo. I dont know if she meant it in a positive or in a negative way.

My second choice was in MSA. In MSA naman, I started enrolling lang kasi after na nung first day nila which was the diagnostic exam, dun lang ako nakapag start. I think okay yung way of teaching nila. Some instructors are fast phased din na you cant understand na what she's saying pero others make the topic simpler na you didn't even realize na ganun lang pala yon.

I think both review centers give hand outs and other review materials din. As of BRAINS, I wouldn't really know how it was like reviewing w/ them. All I have is their compiled review manual I borrowed from a friend :)

MSA isn't bad narin kasi I got a pretty good NMAT score last Dec 12  ;) ;) ;) So I guess all my hardwork paid off

^ talaga po? how was it? :) what were the subjects?

It was nerve wrenching. hehe I trained myself kasi to take exams on time pressure so nasanay nako when I had the actual NMAT. I think most of my room mates didn't had the chance to finish yung part I.

Part I includes: (taken in 3 hours)
Verbal
Inductive Reasoning
Quantitative
Perceptual Acuity

Part II includes: (taken in 2.5 hours)
Biology
Physics
Social Science (includes psychology. sociology and anthropology)
Chemistry

Mas maganda to train yourself din tapos review review ka :)
