^sis kahit sa groceries merong ATC  ;) natry ko yung kirkland before kaso super tagal na haha basta ang tip sa fish oil, pwede tayo magbigay up to 3x the normal dose (100mg of combined EPA and DHA per 10lbs) kung wala kayo masyado makitang improvement dagdagan nyo lang, don't worry wala naman syang ill effects, loose stools lang sa umpisa :)

pa-join ladies!  :D a proud dog lover and owner here.
read about your posts on fish oil and vitamins for dogs.
my view on this:
ang alam ko talaga recommended for dogs is cod liver oil. may atc brand akong nakita at meron din sa ibang pet shops medyo bihira nga lang sya compared to vitamin e which i give my dpg once in a while kapag walang cod liver oil.
as for the vitamins, Raffavit if better than Lc-vit. Raffavit is organic if you'll look sa box pa lang for the contents parang ang sarap inumin  ;D ang dami kasing fruits. another multivitamins a recommend is Papi. It's also better than Lc-vit. Nakakagana din kumain for dogs.

^hi sis fan din kami ng raffavit and papi! ;D my dogs love it so much, pag nakitang hawak ko yung bottle tatakbo na palapit sakin, nagaagawan pa sa dropper! ;D Pampagana talaga sila ano, dahil sa dalawang yan naging matakaw yung picky-eater shih tzu ko.

comment lang ako re cod liver oil, more on vitamin a sya kaya dapat in moderation daw bec. too much can cause hypervitaminosis and can make the bones brittle. kahit sa liver diba dapat hinay-hinay lang because organs are very rich in nutrients, masama pag nasobrahan. unlike with fish oil, epa & dha yung contents nya or omega 3 (healthy fat) kaya kahit masobrahan okay lang bec. it's easily absorbed by the body. mas okay nga daw pag higher dose to compensate for too much omega 6 (animal fats-inflammatory) since anti-inflammatory ang omega 3, super dami nyang benefits like sa heart, skin and coat, joints. I've also found out na hindi advisable ang vitamin e/soy/tocopherols sa dogs, so avoid daw natin, I've learned this in raw feeding, they are reminding pet owners na kahit supplements dapat pure and animal-based din daw for proper absorption.

some info on soy:
"Soy beans can cause gas in some dogs, making them rather smelly companions! Processed soy causes bloating in dogs, and soy is one of the leading causes of food allergies in dogs.

Soy naturally contains plant estrogens (phyto estrogens such as estriol), which act like the hormonal animal estrogens and can interfere with reproduction and normal growth in cats and dogs.

Soy contains trypsin inhibitors which block the action of enzymes which are needed to digest protein. Soy beans contain hemaglutinin which causes red blood cells to clump together. Of all plants ever studied, soy beans contain the highest level of phytates, an organic acid which blocks the uptake of calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc - and can lead to various mineral deficiencies. These phytates are exceptionally resistant to reduction techniques during processing, and only through a long period of fermentation is the phytate content reduced."

so dahil dyan ang vitamins lang namin is raffavit or papi, fish oil and vitamin c (only given during stressful conditions)

@abuanddiego - thanks for the info.  :)
nakakalito minsan kasi talaga. kasi iba-iba din mga information at views na binibigay ng vet as well as sa mga nababasa natin. Our dog used to go to this clinic nga, iba-iba din yung vets na nag-handle sa kanya. they're all good naman but they have different views and advices sa food palang at vitamins nag-iba-iba na. :) just like doctors. kung saan hihiyang, mapapabuti ka at maniniwala dun ka.
back to vitamins, my dog also loves his vitamins. hinihintay n'ya talaga after he eats. Although nakakagana, i think pihikan lang talaga at hindi madami kumain dog ko. he'd rather eat cat food nga rather than his dog food. As for the cod liver/vit. e naman i was just adviced by one of his vets before. pero i rarely give him. once in a while lang kapag super dry ang coat.
:) buti na lang din pala na hindi ko ginawang daily intake since bad din for their health.

^normal dose of fish oil: 100mg of EPA&DHA per 10lbs. pag may health condition pwede up to 3x the normal dose. usually a 900mg of fish oil contains 300mg of EPA&DHA, so good sya for a 30lbs dog. wala naman overdosage sa fish oil, healthy fat sya so don't worry kahit masobrahan. loose stools lang side effect.

^^usually sa vet clinics and petshops. pero pag ganyan medyo serious like arthritis kailangan ng vet prescription para tama yung meds na ibibigay. but fish oil, glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can help, maganda kasi sila sa joints and has anti-inflammatory properties.

cod liver oil is more on vitamin a, iba ito sa fish body oil. too much of this can cause hypervitaminosis and can make the bones brittle, so hinay na lang. actually yung vitamin a and d can come from their food, but yung most important but always lacking sa diet nila is omega 3 or fish oil. if you're already giving a multivitamins, okay na yun pero i suggest na magbigay ka ng fish oil bec. it's beneficial for the skin, coat, joints, heart and overall health. pag fish oil kasi walang overdose, the body can easily absorb it, kung meron man loose stools lang :)

^you're welcome. ATC brand yung gamit namin, local lang sya kahit sa groceries and drug stores meron. pag fish oil mas maganda kung pure meaning walang plant matter like soy, vit. e, alpha tocopherol. yung dosage napost ko na backread lang ng onti ;)

There have been numerous studies debunking the benefits of supplements to humans (some even found that supplements increase the risk of cancer). I'm starting to read science-articles/studies about supplements for pets. Nakakainis because most articles don't have references; I want studies talaga.

^Search for Dr. Karen Becker or Mercola Pets, she's a holistic vet and has reliable sources ;) Source ko rin si Dr. Peter Dobias, holistic vet din. they are not your usual vets, they promote natural products and healing methods. Actually mahirap talaga maghanap ng studies about pets, I've been doing research for years pero kaunti talaga, you have to dig deeper para makahanap ng reliable sources. Minsan sa mga comments pa ako nakakahanap ng useful links, these are pet owners na kinarir talaga ang research for their pets. malaking business daw kasi ang pet products, and most studies are conducted by sponsors (same companies) so biased talaga ang findings.

Ako rin I don't really believe in supplements, iba pa rin kung sa natural way natin makukuha yung nutrients--from our food. If healthy and varied naman ang diet, you won't need supplements. Most supplements kasi are artificial, so hindi rin safe. The only supplement I would vouch for is fish oil :)

^hi sis. don't worry normal lang yan for first timers, lahat tayo dumaan sa ganyan ;) ang pinakaimportant naman maprovide natin after macomplete ng shots is yung basic needs like food, shelter, care, grooming, exercise, vet check-ups. Yung iba kasi luho na lang hehe. yung mga bibilin depende sa breed nila, like for example shih tzu, long-coated sila so mas kailangan ng grooming supplies like shampoo and conditioner, combs, brushes, scissors, ribbons, (clothes, bags, trolley-if you want)

Re fish oil, mas okay kung for humans ibigay kasi nagundergo na yan ng standard quality procedures, mas safe tayo dito. Actually medyo mahirap sya ipainom kasi nalalasahan ng dogs yung oil once kagatin nila, malansa to as in magaamoy galunggong yung mouth nila haha! Ang dami ko ng dogs na natry bigyan pero niluluwa nila, yung bulldog ko lang pumapapak nito. The trick is to hide it inside a piece of meat or liver para lunok agad ;)

^you're welcome. natry namin yung LCVit and COat shine, yan kasi madalas RX ng vets, pero walang effect sa shih tzu ko. Nagswitch kami sa Raffavit, dito sya naging matakaw, mas gusto ko rin to kasi natural supplement sya made of fruits and veggies lang. Yung coat shine wala rin gano effect so inalis ko na hehe.

Re pampataba, I only use Raffavit or Papi as supplements tapos ang diet nila either homecooked or raw. Most toydogs are picky kaya mahirap patabain but don't aim for a fat dog, mas maganda kung healthy sila with muscles and not just bilog hehe. If you want him to be healthy bigyan mo ng meat and avoid too much grains. Yung meat kasi would help them to develop muscles, kahit gano kadaming meat ang ibigay di sila magiging obese. pero yung grains yun ang nakakataba pero unhealthy yung dog.

Yep pwede ka pa magadd ng fish oil, yung coat shine kasi more on AlphaLinoleicAcid (ALA) and onti lang ang EPA&DHA. ang magpapaganda kasi sa coat nila and maabsorb mabuti ng body is omega 3 with readily available DHA&EPA na galing sa fish body oil. Ang mga dogs kasi carnivores sila, they can't convert other forms of omega 3 (ALA-from plant sources into DHA&EPA) so hindi rin ganun kaeffective kung plants ang sources. A healthy 10lb. dog needs around 100mg of EPA&DHA, pero kung may health issues the dog would need 3x of the normal dose. Most fish oil capsules provides 300mg/capsule whereas coat shine only provides 48mg so kung kasulitan ang paguusapan, na kay fish oil ang boto ko ;)

COAT SHINE Composition:
Each mL contains:
Linoleic Acid - 420 mg (ALA)
Linolenic Acid - 24 mg
Arachidonic Acid - 6 mg
Eicosapentanoic Acid - 18 mg (EPA)
Docosahexanoic Acid - 30 mg (DHA)
Vitamin A - 100 iu
Vitamin B6 - 80 ug
Vitamin D3 - 0.36 ug
Vitamin E - 1.5 mg
Zinc Sulfate - 0.24 mg

My puppy's vet prescribed her Papi vitamins. I give her 0.5ml every other day. Is that okay? Magana naman kasi siya kumain ng Acana. Dinagdagan ko na konti yung serving/day. Gusto lang namin maggain weight konti. Nafefeel kasi namin yung ribs niya eh. =( Or tama lang ba yun?

^What's the weight of your pup? Pag kinapa yung body dapat may mafefeel kayong laman hindi bones agad. Ang alam ko usual dose is around 2.5ml for small breeds, 5ml naman for big breeds. My shih tzu started with 2.5ml kahit nung puppy pa sya, yun inadvice ni doc. minsan inaabot pa ng 5ml, matakaw sya pero hindi naman naging obese bec. I control his food intake.

Ilang cups sya per day? Wait lang kayo for about 2months, it takes time din kasi bago sila mahiyang sa food. kung updated naman deworming at magana sya kumain, tataba rin yan within a month ;)
