I do get people (mostly white) who are surprised to hear me speak English well, but I don't think I've ever come across someone who was surprised that Filipinos actually spoke any English period. And I travel a lot plus my business in tourism has me interacting with people from different countries nearly every single day. So I'm really surprised that akthung said that he ALWAYS gets that.

That really gives me the impression that race discrimination is still a big issue in Australia, despite what people have been telling me. This hits home because I've been planning to live/work in that country. As I've said in my first reply to this thread, I have experienced far too much discrimination (race, gender, color, social status, financial status, you name it) in my life that I don't think I can take any more. If Australia is still backward-thinking when it comes to race, I have to seriously consider a different country to migrate to.

If Perth is so multi-cultural, shouldn't being able to speak English with everyone (no matter what accent) be considered a normal thing and not something to be even amazed about? Why do they still find it amazing that Filipinos speak English so well?

Mainly because compared to the Indians, Chinese and other Asians who work/study here, we do speak so much better English.  I've met so many international students here who find it very difficult to communicate in English but are doing well in Uni so you'd really be surprised how they can actually do that.  My boss, who is Sri Lankan, and who has been here 10 years, has the perfect Aussie accent but listen closely and you'll catch the wrong grammar   Perth is very tolerant that way. 

It is true though that Australians are very racist, especially the aboriginals who hate even their fellow (white) Australians because they feel that this land should be theirs and theirs alone.  So imagine na lang their degree of hatred towards Asians.

LOL...even those who have finished the "English Bridging Course" STILL have a hard time speaking and writing in English.

maski sa ibang bansa nagtotolerate sila sa grammar/spelling. In canada, i was able to read a letter sent, by a certain company to my aunt, ay grabe, mali mali pa spelling. big company yun ha. it has something to do with payment for a certain service. tapos...ngerk..heheh

I strongly BELIEVE that racial discrimination is EVERY WHERE and its done to every culture out there. However, I think the most annoying thing that has been said to me was "Hey is true that filipino's eat dogs?" but hey its not like we don't discriminate either right?

Then honestly she told us na hindi nya alam na may English subject daw pala tayo sa Pinas!

I think she is honestly clueless about the Philippines...kasi karamihan sa kanila di naman nakakalabas ng bansa.  She's lucky she met you, at least she'll learn more about social studies through you and be less ignorant.

I remember when I registered for ESL class here in US, the coordinator asked me where I learned English, from home or school ba daw then I answered both. Tapos tinanong na naman niya ang kasabay ko na Mexican na 16 years na daw siya dito, ang sagot niya "neighbor", at napailing ang beauty ko. In fairness, perfect ang entrance test ko at beyond ESL's requirement na daw pero welcome naman daw ako kung gusto ko lang umatend.

About racism, I believed na kahit saan merong ganun, pero dito sa State na tinitirhan ko maraming Mexicans at mas mababa ang tingin ng mga kano kaysa ating mga Pinoy. At sa pinagtrabahuan ko naman, modesty aside, mas marunong pa nga ako sa spelling kaysa mga kasama ko sa hotel na mga americans lahat  sila ha at hindi nila ako pwedeng idown dahil alam nilang college graduate ako sa atin, halos silang lahat (sa dept. namin) hanggang high school lang. At alam nilang hindi ko sila uurungan dahil nagawa ko nang awayin ang isang manager ng isa sa mga properties na kung mag asta parang sino, naging manager lang naman siya dahil mahigit 20 years na sa trabaho..

  a few years back, some collegues were sent to Canada to attend upskilling for work. At the convenience store, one used her BPI credit Card. Sabi ng cashier. "You're Filipinas? You're Nannies? - Gusto daw nilang sapakin.   

Two years ago at the HK airport. Some Filipinas from the same flight as ours were detained and were asked to provide more documents. Siguro just to make sure na di sila mgTNT or mg DH.

O please, here in the US, Asians are considered the highest income earner next only to white americans, talo natin ang mga non american whites (Europeans, etc), hispanics and black americans.  One more thing, ang average American ang tatamad and ang bobob*, very uncultured and unsophisticated.  I find it amusing when they try to put us down.

Catherine: I agree. Some Asians earn more than Caucasians. Asian kids also excel in their classes and oftentimes top the class. Here in the Bay Area, there's a top school in an affluent neighborhood where 90% of the students are Asians and it's so hard to get into that school!

There is a difference between being straight-forward and being tactless. Some sisses here have said that Aussies are very straight-forward. A few months back, I shared an encounter with a rather tactless (rude) Aussie woman. I don't mind answering straight-forward questions, but not disrespectful ones.

Kung ako ba, I'll meet a Somalian woman somewhere, won't I be rude if I ask her, 'Have you almost died because of hunger over there?'. Diba, ang bastos.

kelangan bang overseas nangyari?hehe just wanna share, dati kasi naka-experience ako mismo dito sa pilipinas ng discrimination sa isang 24-hour shop. that time nakapila ako kasama mga friends. isa lang yung cashier na ang bagal tapos super haba ng pila. tapos bigla na lang napansin namin inopen yung isa pang cashier.. tapos pinauna yung mga koreano na asa end ng line.. as in tinawag pa sila. bad trip talaga yun. hindi man lang nagpaalam sa mga naunang nakapila na ganun gagawin. gusto nga namin ipatawag yung manager at magskandalo dun kung bakit ganon ginawa ng employees nila, kaso baka ma-late naman kami sa class. kaya nagwalkout na lang kami at shempre nagparinig na rin. kainis. *ss-kissers.

by the way, i have nothing against koreans. nagkataon lang na lahi nila yun involved
