Nursing Dog & Newborn Puppies

my Aspin dog gave birth yesterday to 7 puppies. i've been researching anything & everything about the do's & dont's of what to feed the nursing dog & how to take care of newborn puppies but everything was all about dog's with breeds.  i am wondering if there are guidelines specially made for Aspins.

also, i've noticed that the youngest puppy is small & does not know where her mom's nipples are even if i guide him to it. he's separated to the 6 pups most of the time, i'm quite worried he'd get sick or make it through. he's a bit cold also. what i do is put him next all the time to the other pups to feel warm.

is it good to give newborn pups Ensure or (human) baby's milk like Gain? i've read here: http://www.chelsea-collies.com/newborn.html that she gives evap milk to her litter kaya lang the article is specially made for Collies.

same lang siguro sis pag aalaga sa askal at may breed. lagyan mo sis ng ilaw yung bumbilya para mainitan yung pup, tapos latagan mo basahan higaan nila para medyo warm. pag kasi may mga pups na di nadede dinuduldol ko dun sa utong nung nanay tapos natututo din. diko pa na-try yung evap. hehe binibigay namin is enfalac lacto-free, pero may mga available na milk for pups kaso di available dito sa province namin.

hi, sis. the little pup that you're talking about is called the "runt" of the litter. sila may pinakapersonality because what happens is since they are very little (in size) they either end up the most dominant (they will have to act more dominant of their littermates to get food) or the most submissive. For me, they're my favorite in the litter.

Anyway, be careful on what kind of milk you bottle-feed the puppies. Because dogs are lactose intolerant baka magka-diarrhea or magsuka. If the mom is breastfeeding the puppies, let her do it na lang. There's no need to bottle-feed the pups. You only bottle-feed the puppies if the Mom rejects them. And the Mom's milk is best din because of the antibodies that will be transferred to the puppies. Puppies immune system is not good yet until they are six months old and up. By drinking the Mommie's milk, it offers them a bit of defense to illnesses.

If you're looking for a milk replacement to use for bottle-feeding your puppies, you can go to a vet or pet shop merong milk replacement specially made for nursing puppies.

If the Mom is breastfeeding her puppies, I suggest to give the Mom a healthy meal na lang. You can check out the thread "Why Chocolates are bad for dogs" dito sa Pets Corner. May downloadble na list dun for what not to feed your dogs and why.

Collies, Chihuahuas, Aspins.. has the same physiology and anatomy. Caring for an Aspin is the same as caring for a purebreed dog.

Congratulations on your Puppies! You might want to consider spaying your dog na since the lesser times she gives birth, mas maliit din ang chances of her having ovarian cancer. You might want to check with PAWS to see if they offer it for free or if it's cheaper than going to the vet.

sorry to hear that, sis. what happened? hindi ba makasingit sa kainan? nakita niyo ba na namatay or naabutan niyo na lang na patay na? tatanong ko sana kasi kung nakita niyo na nag-seizures muna bago namatay.

i just saw him dead already. he's very weak from the very beginning, although i had high hopes for him being healthy, still, he didn't survive.

Sorry to hear that.  the 1st week of the pup is the most critical.  Observation counts a lot.  If you see there is a pup that is smaller and thinner than the rest, mas tutukan mo yun.  It means that nahihirapan yung pup na maka feed from the mom's breast.  You have two options..it's eaither tulungan mo sya and bantayan na nagfeefeed sa breast ng mother dog or you buy a powdered puppy milk and feed the pup yourself until it is strong enough.  feeding should be every 3 hours.  You should also feel the temperature of the pup.  Usually if the paw or body is getting cold or not warm..mejo critical na sya.  Mahina na yun.

@empress: sorry about your dog. our aspin also recently gave birth pero 2 lang sila so di sila agawan sa nipple ng mom nila. nung nilipat ng mom ko ng bed yung mom and the pups, napansin niya na sinipon yung maliit. sabi ko mom ko na ibalik sa loob kasi nga nalalamigan yung mga pups and very fragile pa sila sa stage na yan.

pero yung nakaraan na batch ng puppies e 4 sila and yung pinakamaliit nga e nakakaawa kasi he's sort of being bullied by his brothers esp pag feeding time. so siya di maka-dede. what we did is we fed him na lang, may sarili siya feeding bottle. nag-ok naman siya and he's now a healthy pup.

ask ka sa vet or kahit sa mga pet stores ng multivitamins for your nursing dog. our husky drinks twice  or 3X as much water when she's nursing... pinapainom din namin sya ng sabaw ng malunggay --- hehe

our dog gave birth last May 25 early morning, the vet advised that bonna infant formula could be good for the puppies.

ipa-check mo sa vet sis... baka may abnormality sa loob na yung butas sa mouth dumidiretso sa ilong... obserbahan niyo muna, but if this happens all the time, punta kayo vet.

^yep. kakatuwa talaga. sobrang tatakaw talaga ng mga pups, mukhang butete na pag busog. saka mas matindi pa ang pang-amoy ng mga pups namin kesa sa mga adult dogs namin. kasi kapag nagluluto si mama e andun na kaagad sila sa kitchen.

pwede na ba de-worm ang more than 1mo. old na pups?

my pasaway retriever gave birth last week. awa ng Dyos lahat naman buhay pa at matataba pa.

kailan ba bubukas mata nila para makita na nila kami hehe.
