Hubby just bought me my 2nd Chow today - cream colored male Chow named Bruno. He is such a cutie. Brusko ang body and mataba compared sa mga brothers niya. Natawa ako sa pet shop because they asked if we plan to let him be a stud later on. Puede daw ba kami refer and sa kanila daw namin benta if ever we have pups. Consistent cream kasi ang litter and marami nag hahanap Ng cream.

Problem ko now is how to socialize him with my other Chow. Surprisingly, my 1st female Chow is mailap. Don't know why since she is very sociable naman with other dogs.

^how do we know if bear type o lion type yung chow? plan namin bumili kasi, bumalik na naman pagka like ko sa chow chow, nagcheck kasi kame sa tiendesitas at nagmura na sya, dati kasi ang bentahan dun e nasa 20k pataas, ngayn nasa18k-16k na lang sya.

Lion type has more slim face. Medyo patulis.

Can anyone else share additional diff between the two types?

Sis, careful pala buying cheap na Chow. Madami kasi nag breed now and no control sa quality ng Chow.

Hello sisses! It's my first time to have a Chow. I grew up na madaming dogs so medyo sanay talaga ako, this time around though medyo takot ako. I think I might have over-researched and over-read information. Feeling ko ang OA ko na iinterpret lahat ng ginagawa ng puppy namin. 2-3 weeks prior to us getting our Chow until now basa pa din ako ng basa how to properly care for her. Kasi naman lahat ng kakilala kong may chow, masungit talaga pero yun mga nababasa ko naman online madami naman na friendly sila so I'm hoping na maging mabait din sya. We've only had her for 3 days pa lang by the way. Anyway, since most ng nababasa ko is may tendency talaga sila maging masungit plus ang dogs namin super babait and lambing na labrador, sharpei and golden retriever, normal ba na medyo magugulatin pa yun puppy namin? Like kahit ako tinahulan nya yesterday when I was trying to pick her up from her crate.

We're in the process of socializing our puppy kasi yun ang nabasa ko sa lahat. Medyo natatakot lang ako ilabas pa masyado kasi one of our sharpeis caught parvo before. Ginagawa ko din yun exercises na hahawakan lahat ng body parts nya daily at i-open ang mouth para masanay sya and the vet and groomers won't have a problem.

Medyo natatakot ako sa kanya kasi hindi ako sanay na natatahulan ako. Medyo nagugulat din tuloy ako. I read na kunyare hindi ka affected pero ewan ko hindi ko mapigilan magulat din, so pareho kami nagugulat sa isa't-isa waaa! Lahat ng dogs namin mababait kasi talaga since day 1, to think we got our labrador when she was 3yrs old na.

Are bear type and lion type official classifications? Kasi sa dami ng nabasa ko wala naman ganun or is it just describing how they look at uso lang sya tawagin ganun locally? Ang nababasa ko lang kasi lagi is Smooth and Rough, medyo inassume ko tuloy na yun bear refers to smooth and lion refers to rough.

Ang dami ko questions, naghahanap nga ako ng meet-ups magjoin talaga ako para pareho kami magsocialize ng chow ko hehe.

I'll list a few of my questions, hope you can help me out.

1. Crates - medyo mixed yun nababasa ko. yun iba sabi ok daw ang crate training para marecognize nya na dog sya at kami ang alpha. yun iba naman sinasabi hindi daw maganda cinoconfine sila.

2. Petting and cuddling - May nababasa ako sinasabi i-cuddle para mafeel nila na loved sila and secure sa owners nila. Yun vet namin plus some other online resources sinasabi wag i-baby kasi mafifeel nila na you are at their mercy at sila ang alpha.

3. Food - I'm feeding her Royal Canin right now kasi yun ang sabi sa pet shop but I'm very much open to trying other brands. May nababasa ako na rice is bad for dogs pero sa chows daw ok ang rice. Yun breed nya daw is dapat binibigyan ng rice dahil yun ang kinakain nila before bilang galing sya sa China hehe, US chow org articles yun ha baka kasi isipin nyo puchupuchu website lang yun nakunan ko ng info haha. Since confused na nga ako so I give her dog food + 1 tbsp rice, masabi lang na binigyan ko sya ng rice haha.

4. Vaccines and Deworming - sabi nun kinuhanan namin sa kanya, ideworm daw kasi new environment and then yun 5-in-1 nya after a week. Sabi naman ng vet kailangan na daw bigyan ng 5-in-1 and then ang deworming april pa. We called another vet for a second opinion, same naman sya ng sinabi dun sa kennel.

5. Socialization - Safe na ba i-socialize sya? She's turning 3 months on march 4. Is it safe for her and for whoever will be handling her?

6. Temperament and Training - Right now I'm trying to teach her to sit, stay and come. Medyo successful ako sa sit and stay pero sa come, parang ang gagawin nya sa akin ATTACK waaaa. Tapos kahit nalilito na ako sa mga nababasa ko tnatry ko i-apply pa din. Should I just let her have obedience training kasi nga iba ang temperament ng chows or is it too early at matuturuan ko naman?

Sorry ang dami kong issues ha, hindi ko kasi alam kun sanay lang ba ako sa breed na generally known as mabait na breed.

Hi Sis,

In my experience with my first Chow Hannah and ongoing experience with new Chow Bruno:

1. Crates - didn't use one with Hannah and have no plans of using one with Bruno. They are free roaming in the 1st level of our house. Hannah is already trained not to go upstairs. She used to go upstairs and she liked to pee specifically on my sons bed in the 3rd floor and in the carpet in the 2nd floor TV room. We've trained her to stay downstairs and she sleeps downstairs too. No problem in the Alpha role except when it comes too taking her meds.

2. Petting and Cuddling - we hug our dogs and I must admit sagana sila sa himas. Still like all other Chows, Hannah does not like it when other people comes in to our house. We have relatives whom she still barks at when they come for a visit. By the way, when we let other people come into our house and we tell her it is okay, she lets the person be EXCEPT when they touch something in the house. Then they get growled at again hehe

3. Food - Hannah has Alpo Premium Dog food, the one that you can put water on. I've tried different brands before but hindi niya masyado type yung ibang dry dog food.
    I also buy her wet dog food in cans para hindi magsawa. Sometimes, we run out of dog food and we let her eat rice and ulam. Not yung mga leftovers ha but her own specific serving

4. Vaccines and Deworming - I just follow the sched given by the vet 5-1 vaccine/Deowrming/heartguard. Yesterday though, the Vet gave Hannah Ivomec. She doesn't have galis but since she has ear problems which we suspect are ear mites, I opted for the Ivomec because it already covers heartworm, deworming, tapeworms, and mites in case meron naliligaw na I do not see The shot is good for 3 months so rest ako for monthly deworming.

5. Socialization - my dogs are very well socialize and well exposed to people because they are taken out for a walk morning, afternoons and evenings. We are also big on always petting them and talking to them. They just don't like strangers coming in to our house. Bruno now seems to be taking her cue from Hannah. If Hannah does not bark at the person, she doesn't as well hehe

6. Temperament and Training - Hannah is already well trained except for taking meds orally which is still a struggle. She is very sweet and smart! I bought new vitamins yesterday and I guess she didn't like the taste. This morning, after 1 lick, she wouldn't take the vitamin already and kept running away and turning away her face. I decided to mix the vitamins in her food. She was excited and in a hurry to eat but when she smelled her food, I guess she figured out that I put the vitamins in and she refused to eat. Patigasan kami ngayon, magutom siya if she does not eat :p

    Bruno was mailap when he was at the store but I kept hugging him and petting him since I brought him home. Now, no problem in petting him wag lang magugulat. Start pa lang ng training so I'll have to see how smart he is. The first bath session was a major rumble. This morning's bath was a lot better. He likes being rubbed in the chest and tummy so I just made sure one hand kept rubbing those area to keep him still while I wash his other parts.

Patience lang talaga sis and figuring out what makes your Chow tick. Chow Chows are very independent by nature, aloof but very smart with good memory. But if trained and loved well, they can be the most malambing, maharot, and loyal companion. To their human pack atleast

@maricar14 - thanks so much sis, nabawasan anxiety ko. ang galing mo naman we got our chows on the same day pero parang mas at ease sya sayo than mine is with me.

Ayaw ko din sana sya ipastay sa crate but then wala naman sya area to run around dito sa house namin. I'm planning to device a sched for our chow para gawin nya play area the terrace in our room. pero pag sleep time sa crate pa din.

Sa food naman sis, kahit anong dog food linalagyan ko ng warm water then i leave it for 30-45 minutes para mag expand sya. Nabasa ko kasi na if you don't do that, sa loob ng stomach ng dog nangyayari yun expansion nun food so mangyayari yun parang sa marley and me

May binigay yun vet na treats, pill pals ang name nya sinasama daw pag nagbibigay ng meds.

Today we went to the vet for her deworming medyo may nakuha akong tips pano i-pahandle sa mga tao si Gold (name of my chow). At first kasi takot sya dun sa assistant but ayun nga nakita ko what he did para maging at ease si Gold.

I got her treats kasi  training ulit kami mamaya ng handling plus sit and stay.

Thanks talaga sis, sige I will exert more effort and patience pa.  Hay ang hirap ng nasanay sa dogs na pwede kidnapin sa bait. All our other dogs we just let them be. Walang socialization na OA, walang treat treat basta sumusunod lang sila haha

1. Crates - pagala gala lang sila, it's a no no for dogs for us, let them be a dog, let them run and play yun na nga lang happy time nila, you can be a pack leader with proper training and energy, don't spoil them. Plus chows are prone to hip disorder kung di sila maeexercise.

2. Petting and cuddling - you should only show them affection when they are well-behaved. don't pet them on the head, dapat sa neck area and the hip area kasi sensitive sila dun. don''t treat them like a human to avoid domination.

3. Food - you should give them food after they exercise, they should work for their food and water to avoid red zone cases. we feed our dogs with almost anything, high protein diet.

4. Vaccines and Deworming - deworming ang pinakauna, after ng deworming 5in1 na.

5. Socialization - it's a must must must for all dogs to be socialized, if you don't, it will lead to many problems with dogs and other people.

6. Temperament and Training - chow chows are lazy, moody and stubborn dogs, mahirap turuan but when you give them treats after a command matuturuan naman. it's important to train them early as possible, dapat relax lang palagi ang energy kasi dogs can sense your energy, trust yourself first that you and your dog can achieve your goal. kapag di naman nagbebehave ang dogs namin we don't shout at them kasi di nila naiintindihan yun at naeexcite lang sila sa malakas or matining na sounds, sinisitsitan lang namin and a touch on the neck.

It would be nice if there is one for Chow Chow. I haven't seen if he has any article on Chows. The articles I've seen are mostly generic for any kind of dogs.

Hi, im new here. I bought 2 chow chow last week, male and female (kirby&kasey). Super cute nla and mag 3 months plng cla. (ndi cla magkapatid). Napansin ko [textspeak!] matapang si kasey, lagi nyang sinasaktan c kirby. at nkkaawa. Mdalas cla naghaharutan, at madalas din na pag pinapakan ko cla nilalaro nla [textspeak!] kamay ko at halos kagatin na. Pag pina poops ko nman sila sinusundan nila paa ko at kinakagat. ano ba pwede ko gawin sa kanila? Para siguro sa kanila laro lang, pero ayoko sila masanay. Buti pa kau ndi ganun chow nyo.

^Constant training and discipline lang mawawala din yan. When they try to bite, kahit playing gently tap mouth nila and say no. After a few times, they get it naman.

I suggest you start training them on it to avoid problems when they go teething. Otherwise you might also have problems with chewed shoes, slippers, carpet, etc.
