Starting Life/Work in US - Tips and Stories

So I've been here for over a week and everything's been going great until yesterday.  I failed the DMVs road test for failure to fully stop at a stop sign (I was doing rolling stops).  Severely underestimated that test and it was over in 2 minutes, what a blow to the ego. huhu.

I plan to give it a try again next week, need my car insurance premiums to go down.  Been driving around town with my international driving permit but still getting used to the flow of traffic.

Any tips on what should I expect next time?  TIA!!

^xthine: i haven't taken the driving test myself but my uncles tell me, always count a few seconds pag full stop. i forget whether it's 3 secs or 5 secs.  i do that when i drive with my philippine license in CA, because im terrified of getting a ticket. LOL.  also, when changing lanes you have to physically look over your shoulder, di pwede na sa rearview or side mirrors lang.  so the instructor has to see you turn your head. make sure you adjust your seat and mirrors before anything else.  you might already know these, but that's all i can think of for now. oh, and also know how to make a 3-point turn, i read that somewhere here in GT.  HTH.  good luck sis!

I failed my driver's exam too.  Rolled through the 1st stop and was told to go back to the DMV. Test over.

The DMV lady told me she had to see my odometer go to zero at the stop, or else that wasn't a stop.

^ baka you're getting an iPhone.  usually the deposit is $500 if you don't have any credit history yet.

yeah im getting the new iphone. pero pag ibang phone meron pa rin its like 300. kaya nag t mobile na lang ako.

Alam ko basta majority ng year dapat nasa US ka e. Just don't know if you can stay outside of US for 6mos or more.

May kilala ko over 1 year sila dito sa Manila yun nga lang na-sita sila ng immigration buti na lang may dala silang medical certificate na nagkasakit sila kaya lagpas ng 1 year, dapat mga 11 months lang sana sila. I think for LPR, re-entry permit yung kailangan pag matagal ka sa labas ng US (1-2years). Check uscis.gov for form I-131. Dapat nga lang sa US i-file yun so I think you have to go back bago ka mag-1 year dito.

Thanks for the driving tips!! Yeah I'll try and keep that in mind.  Definitely have to work on my CA stops and keep reminding myself to abide by the rules for the actual test.

hi! just a few question, what do you mean "rolling stops" and "3point turn"? i know about the changing lane, my hubby told me about it...but im confused about the rolling stop...di ba dapat pag full stop, change the gear na [textspeak!] to "P"(park), para full stop? andito pa ko sa Pinas, but I wanna know about these para pagpunta ko US, im well aware na ...tia!

^sis rolling stop means you just pause for a bit, then drive off again. full stop means the car has to be not moving at all for a couple of seconds...probably around 3 secs.  i hope that's clear hehe sorry kung malabo.

3-point turn sis you can google it may mga diagrams. HTH

Hmmm I don't think you have to shift to P at stop signs, but then again I failed the road test so don't take my word for it. hehe.

I have a multiple entry tourist visa.  I already visited US na purely vacation lang.  Next time I want to work sana.. I'll consume my 6 months stay para naman mabawi ko pinamasahe ko.hehe My question is makakakuha kaya ako ng part time work?aside from mag baby sit ako sa mga anak ng relatives ko. 

second,  eventually gusto ko mag settle down sa US bago mag expire ang visa ko.  I don't know kung pano.. sabi ng sis ko mag aral ako ng nursing dito.  Pero di ko sya linya talaga.  I'm into sales and mktg.  And i'm already 31 yrs old. So kung mag nursing ako it'll take 4 years pa before i graduate. In that span of time ang dami ko na siguro nagawa sa US.  What do you think mga sis? Give me your insights naman.. thanks!

You're not supposed to work since you only have a b1b2 visa.  Maybe you
Could try and find a sponsor first so you can legally work.

Hi sis! thanks sa reply, yes I understand I'm not supposed to work.  Pero marami din naman tulad ko took chance na mag trabaho and they found one.  I'm not sure lang given the economic situation sa US ngayon kung possible pa..

you can definitely work, di lang legal.  hehe

if you look hard enough, im sure you can find something to do that will offset your travel expenses at the very least.

^^Yeah I'm not too sure about that too.  Left and right they've been cutting hours from work, people getting laid off etc.  Maybe the local Filipino community in your area might be able to help you out.

Question : If you took a DMV written test and you passed it, di ba bibigyan ka nila ng permit? The permit is good until when? Tapos ba nun kukuha ka na dapat ng actual driving test?

Sis, before you take your driving exam ask for the reviewer, ako perfect ko yung written exam and minus 1 point sa paatras kasi hindi straight yung pagatras ko.

^^I got a permit after I passed the written test, could not exactly remember the validity period for the written.. 3 months i think?  It's best to take the road test soon as you pass the written, that way you can get your driver's license already.

I made an inquiry about that when I went to DMV to get a state license, the woman said I could use the learner's permit for 2 straight years, once I pass a written test, and should I decide to get a driver's license, all I have to do is pass a road test.. I live in NC. I don't know if it's the same for the other states
